Two old rivals lock horns at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night, with Essendon desperate for a win and Hawthorn keen to continue their fans’ suffering. Join The Roar for live scores and rolling coverage from 7:25pm (AEST).
Essendon has recorded just one win after seven matches this season, leaving fans frustrated about their side which finished 8th last year and haven’t won a final since 2004.
With years of building and the completion of a coaching handover from John Worsfold to Ben Rutten, fans would have expected output than the current situation.
It will be a massive game for the Bombers while the Hawthorn will be looking to get back on the winners’ list after two weeks of decent footy without much reward.
The Hawks gave up a 32-point first quarter lead to lose by 41-points against Sydney, followed by an honourable 10-point loss to premiership favourites Melbourne last week.
Prior to their two consecutive losses, the Hawks defeated Geelong and were on a 3-2 win-loss record.
Now the emerging team will be aiming to level its win-loss record to 4-4.
Changes for the Bombers include Jake Stringer with a hamstring injury and youngster Nik Cox with an ankle problem, which see backup ruckman Nick Bryan and the speedy Nick Hind come in.
For the Hawks, Connor Macdonald, Conor Nash and Liam Shiels will be out, with Denver Grainger-Barras, Harry Morrison and Josh Ward coming in.
Prediction
Hawthorn by 16 points.

Lots of those 16 were won when most houses in Australian had an outside toilet.

I can remember when St Kilda, Hawthorn and North Melbourne hadn’t won a premiership and Footscray had won their first in 1954. Very grim for St Kilda being one of the foundation VFL clubs.

13 is still less then 16..but who's counting! Just saying

Absolutely. Stated on several platforms at different stages that we were going to run over the top of them. Everyone knew after the Sydney game that Hawthorn give up when things look difficult

still think Hawthorn is going well. Very impressed with Newcombe. Hawks should have put game away earlier, but Essendon played with fantastic intensity last quarter (as good as i have seen by that club in recent years).

i thought we would lose up to the last quarter, but then we seemed to lift with our intensity as if their lives depended upon it. Great effort Dons.

Were your still confident with your pick @ 3/4 time when the Hawks were leading by 15 points? Poor kicking by Jack Gunston was keeping Essendon in the match. Even the most optimistic Bombers fan would not have thought that they were going to kick 8 goals in the last quarter. They have struggling to kick that many goals in a match so far this year.

Confidence in being the main man that year when Tom Mitchell had his broken leg. Hasn't played as well since Mitchell's return. It's a mental thing I think more than a lack of ability although he's far from the complete package.

Get Dunstall down to take set shot training. Failure to put scoreboard pressure on earlier in the game left the door open.

Don’t get the love for Worpel. He tries hard but very limited. How did he win a B&F?

Haha. I guess I'll have to just have to the 13 Hawthorn flags won in my lifetime to keep me warm at night. Enjoy your H&A win - it was a bloody good effort by your boys tonight.

I picked it in the first quarter

Must suck to be beaten by a team that is "irrelevant", what does that say about Hawthorn then? Not even rebuilding when you still have junk like Worpel clogging your list. 8 LAST QUARTER GOALS :stoked:

Sam Mitchell post-game speaking about not being able to take control: "We could never really put them away, we sort of held onto a lead for a lot of the day and we just couldn't get far enough in front at any stage. We lost control of the game at different stages before that as well and we were able to get it back but later on in the game, we obviously couldn't move the ball and get it in our front end, and when we did it bounced out too easily. There were worrying signs for a bit more of the day than just the last part."

Ben Rutten post-game speaking about what he was most pleased with: “I felt like there was about four 12-point plays today whether they would be score reviews or missed opportunities, free kicks… felt like there were a lot of those swings. I think there the things over the last couple of weeks that have really stung us as a group and we’ve kind of struggled how to work through that so as much as anything that’s the pleasing thing for me out of the game, where there was disappointment or we made a mistake or things didn’t go our way but our ability to stick to the task and get back on it was great.”

Ben Rutten post-game speaking about the illness that caused five late changes to the side: “Pretty cool, a lot of pride I think. The last 24 hours, in particular, there’s some really nice stories there with some guys that came up and played. Not only them though, I think we had five late changes, the guys that pushed to the line, and then there’s sometimes a fair bit of courage in making the call not to play as well. I think that especially when you know other guys around you are dropping around you, sometimes you feel like the best thing you can do is play but the guys made clear responsible team first decisions and then there’s the guys that stepped up and played on late notice and came out and performed. There’s some of the really nice stories that are in this game.” Rutten revealed Sam Durham was the last one to pull out which occurred on his way to the game. “The late one [was] Sammy Durham on the way here. It just hit him… and he couldn’t get up.”

Haha. Who would want to be a Dons fan? At least St Kilda fans know they are not destined for anything but disappointment.
