The Gold Coast Suns will unveil top two draft picks Matt Rowell and Noah Anderson in front of their home crowd when they take on the Geelong Cats at Metricon Stadium in their first Marsh Community Series match tonight. Join The Roar for live scores from 7:40pm (AEDT).

After another wretched season in 2019 saw them finish last and lose their final 18 games, the Suns will feature plenty of fresh faces in this year’s pre-season, as Stuart Dew tries to turn things around.

Alongside Rowell and Anderson, premiership Tiger Brandon Ellis and former Adelaide midfielder Hugh Greenwood will play their first games in orange, while the match marks a homecoming for inaugural Sun Zac Smith, who played the last four seasons at the Cats before being traded back to the Gold Coast.

Meanwhile, the Cats will be without captain Joel Selwood as he recovers from off-season hamstring surgery. Last year’s preliminary finalists have a number of new faces themselves, most notably much-maligned former Crow Josh Jenkins in the forward line.

Sorry about my rambling response. I wish I knew how to use paragraphs in Roar on my phone.

Well obviously not enough cattle last year. But it was the big forward we were missing in our grand final. I thought we had Richmond for pace but couldn’t close the gate. Only watched a little last night. Young Gazza looked good. I think we will miss Kelly. He was one of my favourites. If Narkle, Cockatoo etc don’t step up we could have trouble in the mid field. Selwood is more a winger now and he can do the occasional burst. Probably the old players that are a worry are Henderson Taylor and Jenkins now. Not so much their pace. More they need to contest vigorously. So probably not pace but endeavour. Must be hard to smash everyone in the first half a year including the Tigers then rolling over in the prelim.

Sorry Yattuzzi, I didn’t mean by points but in the contests, GCS applied some heat in around the ball and the Geelong boys (going at 80%) got beaten easily and then didn’t take the advantage when the GWS made mistakes, which was many, so it looked terrible. Yattuzzi do you agree that on bigger grounds against faster, skilled sides that Geelong plays/looks slow and will get found out? Now you slot in Selwood, Danger and Co in tight and they can bully their way and move the ball fast but on the spread they look slow, far too offensive midfield, they rely on the half back line to win back the ball. Geelong should make finals only because they play on a smaller ground at home and should beat most, but on the MCG the home of footy against fast moving sides that spread, I don’t think they have the 22 to win a grand final.

Cracka, I know you only saying what everyone else says but it is not true. I don’t believe the Cats ever got smashed last year. Their away from home record was as good as at home. I agree with the rest of your post. It is promising for GC.

The Gold Coast Suns look a little more advanced than Geelong at this point in the year, a lot to like about the speed of GCS and they seem to have the right balance of height around the ground, but they did make a lot of mistakes which Geelong didn't make them pay for. Geelong not much has changed, lose away from home and put them under huge amount of pressure and they get smashed, they looked very slow and the game plan was give it to the old blokes and hope. GWS going at 100% and Geelong going at 80%.

Alot to like at GCS Even though Geelong went through the motions.
