The GWS Giants will look to keep themselves near the top of the AFL ladder when they head to Canberra for a clash with surprise packets the St Kilda Saints. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 1:45pm (AEST).

The Saints have been the biggest shock to the competition throughout the early part of 2019, and while they still need to mount the case that this is what they will consistently look like moving forward, they have plenty of positives to build on.

They will turn up at Manuka Oval with a four and two record, which, for a team widely tipped to finish in the bottom four is a stunning start to 2019.

Yet, the four and two record is something of a result built by a soft draw, with their victories all coming against battling clubs in the Gold Coast Suns, Essendon Bombers, Melbourne Demons and Hawthorn Hawks.

The victory over the Hawks was probably their best, but they will need to increase their level to go with the Giants this afternoon, who also come in with a four and two record, and have been letting their attack do all the talking.

The loss of Lachie Whitfield to injury might throw a spanner in the works for the AFL’s expansion club, but there can be few questions they come in as heavy favourites, particularly when you consider it’s their defence which has let them down in the games they lost, like last week to the Adelaide Crows.

The Giants come into this game having belted the Sydney Swans by 41 points in the crosstown rivalry last week, making it the third time in six starts they have managed to cross a century of points.

Their forward line has been superb this year, and if the Saints defence in midfield isn’t up to scratch, then they are going to have a long afternoon trying to stop the Giants inside 50.

Toby Greene’s return from injury which curtailed his 2018 season has helped pave the way for the Giants, but Stephen Coniglio, Josh Kelly have also been in outstanding touch, while Jeremy Cameron is the early leader for the Coleman Medal and has had a lot of success against the Saints previously.

Prediction
The Saints are probably going to struggle this afternoon and should fall to their second-straight loss against the Giants.

Giants by 25.

The Saints looked like they were about to run over the top of the Giants. Parker's miss seemed to switch the Saints' momentum off.

TBH I expected a bigger margin. This game was never going to be close. Dunno what people think they see in the Saints.

So GWS and Collingwood are real contenders and Port and Saints don’t make the cut.

Thanks for joining me this evening on The Roar for our live coverage of the 2019 AFL season as the GWS Giants thumped the St Kilda Saints by 44 points. Hopefully you enjoyed the call. Right now it's time to switch over and join AdelaideDocker for the Brisbane Lions and Sydney Swans. I'll be back at 5:30pm (AEDT) for some NRL action as the Manly Sea Eagles play the Canterbury Bulldogs, and of course, this big Saturday of sport is in full swing right across the site with every NRL, AFL and Super Rugby game live. Bye for now.

FULLTIME The GWS Giants have hammered the St Kilda Saints by 44 points on Saturday afternoon at Manuka Oval. Not quite a complete performance from the Giants, but it wasn't far away. They came out of the gates firing, scoring a half century of points in the first quarter as the Saints struggled to put any sign of pressure on in defence. It looked more like a training drill for the Giants during the first term as Jeremy Cameron made a good start to a day which would eventually bring him a bag of six goals. The Saints fought back in the second quarter as they reduced the gap to 25 points at the main break with the final 13 points of the second quarter, but with Jade Gresham and some other big names struggling, they found it hard to get back into the contest. St Kilda kept their foot down early in the third quarter and at one point had a good chance of getting back into the game, but a big miss to Matthew Parker, followed by back-to-back goals to Cameron and the outstanding Harry Himmelberg, put the game all but out of the question on the approach to three quarter time. Greater Western Sydney, while having Cameron star, also had some outstanding efforts from Harry Himmelberg and Nick Haynes at the back, with the pair among the best on ground. FULLTIME Toby Greene with a free kick on the siren here. Got held off the ball as the Giants kicked back towards the top of the goal square. Greene puts the icing on the cake, and the Giants improve their record to five and two with a huge 44-point win. Giants 18.6 (114) Saints 10.10 (70)

Q4 0' Haynes has been so, so good today. He takes his fifth intercept mark of the day as the Saints try to work it down the broadcast side of the ground. His kick is intercepted as well though. Giants 17.6 (108) Saints 10.10 (70)

Q4 3' - GOAL GIANTS, MATT DE BOER De Boer has had a really good afternoon, and with the ball handed off to him here on the run, he bangs it through from just inside 50 for his first of the afternoon. Giants 17.6 (108) Saints 10.8 (68)

Q4 3' - GOAL SAINTS, DEAN KENT The Saints win the hit out this time and it'll be Parker with some smart play, finding some space and finding Kent who then goes back and slots the goal. Giants 16.6 (102) Saints 10.8 (68)

23

Jeremy Cameron scored a goal for GWS Giants
102-63

Q4 4' - GOAL GIANTS, JEREMY CAMERON The Giants now from Cameron to Lloyd and Taranto who kicks forward. Coniglio then gets it away to Cameron who finds just enough space after getting around one, then snaps across the body and gets enough on it for his sixth goal of the afternoon. Giants 16.6 (102) Saints 9.8 (62)

Q4 5' A huge mark here from the Williams for the Giants. They quickly get it inside 50, but the support defence is there to stop Cameron from marking, before we have a ball up inside 50. Giants 15.6 (96) Saints 9.8 (62)
