The Western Bulldogs have made the trip to Sydney to take on the GWS Giants and toweled up the home side by 61 points.
With so much at stake, a close and enthralling contest appeared likely. The Giants needed a win to lock up sixth spot on the ladder and a home final. To have any chance of playing in the finals, the Bulldogs were in a must-win mentality.
Early on, that scenario appeared to have brought two teams to the contest with a resilient and determined mindset. After the Dogs got the early jump in a high scoring first quarter, the home side pulled things back late and went to the first change just four points in arrears.
By half time, the Giants had taken the lead by three as the teams went to the sheds for the long break. Few could have predicted what was to unfold when the teams returned to the field for the second half.
In short, the Giants failed to score a goal over the final two quarters, as the Bulldogs put them to the sword with a dozen consecutive goals of their own.
It was an utter embarrassment for Leon Cameron’s men and the second week running that they have essentially dropped their bundle and failed to apply themselves in the second half when under pressure.
The Bulldogs were impressive, desperate in defence and effective with the ball whilst the Giants became an absolute rabble despite appearing to start positively.
To me it says something a little scary about the Giants’ list and alludes to an attitude issue. When the going got tough, they completely vanished and the Bulldogs appeared to want the victory far more.
The Giants will be unlikely to turn around their current form come semi-final time and the Bulldogs could go into September as a much more dangerous proposition for opposition teams.
What an afternoon for the Bulldogs, they will celebrate tonight but also realise the importance of their clash against Adelaide next weekend.
For the Giants? Well, I’m not really sure what to say but they will not be winning an AFL premiership in 2019 after those last two embarrassing efforts.

The GWS Giants and Western Bulldogs face off in Round 22 AFL action at Sydney Olympic Park. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 3:20pm (AEST).
After a drubbing at the hands of the Hawks last weekend and a season that continues to derail with injury and inconsistent form, Greater Western Sydney enter this clash with the Western Bulldogs in a must-win scenario.
The top four now looks a bridge too far and a loss today could even put them in realistic danger of missing out on the top eight altogether.
One of the teams attempting to squeeze into that position is their opponent today and four points for the Bulldogs would see them move temporarily into the play-off spots.
The trouncing of Essendon last weekend will have Luke Beveridge’s troops champing at the bit and with the Giants limping their way towards the finals, they appear ripe for the picking this afternoon.
Beveridge has made no changes to his team; exactly what is required late in the season with so many other squads being seriously hampered by injury.
Josh Kelly, Matt de Boer and Harry Himmelberg all return for the home side in a much-needed boost to their stocks, although Brett Deledio now looks cooked for the season and Jeremy Cameron misses with a minor leg strain.
It should come down to battle of the Giants outside run and the Bulldog’s efforts to stifle their fluency with the ball.
That fluency has been achieved only inconsistently this season and been difficult to achieve amidst the run of injury and absenteeism that the Giants have suffered for much of the year.
Prediction
The Bulldogs will come to Sydney in the hope of a ‘smash and grab’ four points against a slightly wounded opponent and logic suggests they will get the job done on the road.
Momentum is everything at this time of year and just as in their premiership year of 2016, they have it at the right time.
It might be too late to sneak into serious contention for the flag, yet they will prove too strong for a GWS side that has shown little form since their win against the Pies four weeks ago.

Peter, what is your view on Kelly? Here in Sydney everyone raves about him. I feel is a very soft and lazy player who only looks great on a good day. They needed grunt today and he gave them nothing.

Jeez there are some horribly inconsistent teams in the AFL who just don't deserve to be playing finals footy - GWS, Port Power, Crows and Essendon for a start
