An intriguing match-up awaits as the Hawthorn Hawks open their 2020 season at the MCG against the Brisbane Lions. Keep up to date with live scores on The Roar from 3:40pm (AEDT).
Hawthorn will be looking for a return to September after an unlucky broken leg to Brownlow medallist Tom Mitchell played a large part in keeping them out last season. They’ll have a tough time of it against a Brisbane Lions side full of confidence after finish second last season.
After losing eight straight games to the Hawks, Brisbane have won their last four meetings since the beginning of 2018. However, they’ll need to overcome a horror record at the MCG to get the points here.
Bounce: 3:40pm (AEDT)
Venue: MCG
TV: Fox Footy, Seven
Online: Kayo Sports, Foxtel GO, AFL Live Pass
Head-to-head: Hawthorn 17, Brisbane 17
Last five: Brisbane 4, Hawthorn 1
Odds: Brisbane $1.76, Hawthorn $2.05

You did ask for my opinion. That was it.

So true to form, your anti Hawthorn tirade continues. Have you ever rated Hawthorn? In the 70’s? In the 80’s? During the 2013-2015 three peat? Or your pride won’t allow you? Even the most anti Hawthorn fan would surely accept they have been very good/great sometimes in the last 50 years?

It's hard to rate Hawthorn until they get the same treatment with the whistle as other sides. While they get such an advantage (something like 20 to 15...but it's the frees not given against them at crucial times that's the problem) it's hard to compare them. Brisbane looked the better team but the whistle made the difference in the respective 50 metre arcs. I don't think they are much of a factor if the rest of the season is played. Bottom 5...probably bottom 3.

You seem to be borrowing my idea.

Very funny Don given their recent history I’d say #freosighofrelief. I’m curious did you rate the Hawks today ?

Bris will be lucky to make top 6. Very overrated side IMO couldnt win a home final last year. Also had an easy draw, not this season.

Big deal they are professional sportsman not school kids. Surely it couldn't have come out left field & been a total surprise to them. Sam for both teams & with a shortened season the win was probably of more importance than a usual first round game.

I'm just happy the Luke Hodge curse is over

I reckon I can keep it up AD until the Eagles pip us by under a goal again in the next GF. Then, all promises out the window.

Thanks Matt.Mum is 76 but living fairly remote. All the best to you and your family. Your positivity is infectious and will be needed not just outside but in here too.

With the quality players you mention and quite a few others too, plus Clarko, I was staggered many punters had the Hawks bottom 4. May all come to nought unfortunately.

I had the Hawks just making the 8. Only the first game and who knows what season we will get but there were some really good signs with Scully, Wingard and Omeara running really well. Just happy that Patton and Mitchell got through unscathed.

Can't read too much into round 1. Good win by your boys though.

Yep. In a 'normal' season would have been certainties to make the 8.
