Chad Wingard will make his Hawthorn debut on Sunday when the Hawks host the North Melbourne Kangaroos at the MCG. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match, starting from 3:20pm AEST.

After a difficult 2018 season at Port Adelaide, Wingard was one of the biggest stories of last year’s trade period as he made his way to Hawthorn.

The Hawks paid no small price to acquire him, sending their first-round draft pick that year (eventually used to recruit Xavier Duursma) and impressive South Australian talent Ryan Burton to the Power in exchange.

If you did a street poll asking any random footy fan to pick a side, most would probably the say Port came out winners – Hawthorn clearly feel differently and will be hoping Wingard shows us all why on Sunday.

The Hawks have also brought in former Box Hill VFL player David Mirra alongside Wingard as the replacements for Liam Shiels and Shaun Burgoyne, both injured in last week’s loss to the Western Bulldogs.

That match was perhaps one of the most remarkable we’ll see all season as the Dogs kicked nine goals in the final quarter to snatch an unlikely win. It leaves Hawthorn with a 1-1 record.

As for their opponents North Melbourne, the Kangaroos will be beginning to feel the weight of expectation as an 0-2 start to the season has not done much to satisfy fans’ craving for success.

Although new recruits Jared Polec and Aaron Hall in particular have both had a nice impact, and Luke Davies-Uniacke appears to be a much-improved player, North have been woeful defensively.

Part of that could be attributed to an injury crisis in their backline. Marley Williams is out this week, joining Ed Vickers-Willis, Majak Daw and Sam Durdin as defenders on the sidelines.

Part also is that North are conceding scores too easily from the centre bounces – and given that, plenty of fans are wondering why it is that coach Brad Scott seems to be ignoring the talent of Paul Ahern.

Prediction
While the Hawks would’ve been disappointed to let last week’s result slip, they’ve been easily the more impressive of these two sides so far, and look well placed to exploit North’s poor defence.

Hawthorn by 36 points.

Yep he was pretty good, two goals as well, I am probably guilty of being under appreciative of ruckman.

He never does, been consistent for years without the accolades from the media and general footy public. In the top 5 ruckman for around the ground work.

Final Siren. Kangaroos came out firing early but the Hawks wore them down with a sustained effort for the following three quarters, with the advantage of having a few more match winners on the day. For the Hawks, O'Meara's resurgence continued with 32 touches in the middle and Ricky Henderson was impressive with 29 touches and a goal. However it was the sprinkling of stardust up forward which was the key difference, with Breust kicking a, rather ridiculously casual, five goals straight, and Wingard slotting three including two all important last quarter goals. The Kangaroo's had plenty of midfield grunt with Cunnington, Macmilian and Atley seeing plenty of the ball, while Higgins was arguably best on ground with 35 classy touches and a goal. Nevertheless, after the first quarter the Roo's couldn't link it together as well and fatally couldn't find a consistent threat up forward to match the Hawks. Very tight game, but Hawthorn show they still know how to find those wins. Thankyou to those who joined us, hope you enjoyed a tight game of Sunday footy at the G! Final Scores Hawthorn: 13.9. (87) North Melbourne: 10.11. (71)

Gutsy win Hawkers! Rallied after that slow start, great win! Great to see Wingard get involved and show a lot of passion!

Trent Dumont kicks his second goal, Kangas have the last two but with 1:50 remaining it looks a bridge too far for the Roos. Hawthorn: 13.9. (87) North Melbourne: 10.11. (71)

McEvoy with a good mark and set shot 35 metres out left hand side. Could seal it but fades and rushed over. Point Hawthorn. 3minutes to go! Hard for North from here. Hawthorn: 13.9. (87) North Melbourne: 9.11. (65)

Yes they are. Looked really good early and have tried hard after but struggled for goals since.

50 metre penalty for Hawthorn and Breust has it slight angle 25 metres out. Notch it down as a goal if you hadn't already. Hawthorn: 13.8. (86) North Melbourne: 8.11. (59)

Debutant Cousins goes long and deep into the pocket. Illustrious name that. Speaking of illustrious, Wingard has snapped a goal out of nothing. He’s come alive in the last quarter! Hawthorn: 12.8. (80) North Melbourne: 8.11. (59)
