The so-called ‘Harley Reid Cup’ sees West Coast to head to Tasmania to face Hawthorn, with as much at stake for the loser as the winner. Join The Roar for live scores from 1:10pm (AEST).

In second-last and last position on the ladder respectively and with just one win apiece, 2023 has been grim so far for both the Eagles and Hawks. The Eagles have been decimated by injury, while the Hawks are at ground zero of a long and painful rebuild.

However, with young gun Reid a near-certainty to be taken with pick 1 in this year’s draft, the loser here, guaranteed to end the round at the bottom of the ladder, will have the inside running to acquire his services. Is it possible that the real victors in Launceston will be whichever team leaves without the four points?

Totally agree, l didn't think the margin would be that big but l wouldn't have been satisfied with a close win. They weren't satisfied with just a win and even though the oppo wasn't good quality a win by this margin will do wonders for their confidence going forward. I will be very surprised if Weddle doesn't get the rising star nomination this week. Wardlaw had a great debut but Weddle took it to another level, l was happy they traded up to get him. Looks very very promising.

Most pleasing aspect was that there was no let up all game. We need that ruthlessness regardless of the oppo's quality.

Like l said above l thought it was a good win even against an injury riddled side due to the margin. Just glad they capitalised as there was a lot of pressure on the Hawks from the outside regarding tanking. It was a good move appointing Mitchell as coach of Box Hill, like you said he was able to develop and get to know quite a few of them before taking over. Glad to get the win because we both know our teams aren't going to get too many. The biggest upside for the Eagles with all the injuries is that the young players getting regular games into them and getting that valuable experience. Imo will definitely speed up their development. Without the bad luck a lot of these guys would be getting limited opportunities, hard now but the Eagles don't stay down for long.

Well even there it's 2 and a bit years ahead. Clarkson had minimal control in his last season but also Mitchell had alot of these guys at Box Hill before that where he was given the side to coach in the manner he wanted. It is really little surprise that they had wce number imo because the cohesion is there. Their centre square work is excellent and only going to get better. See U in a grand final again in 8 years

Hawks rebuild really only started when Mitchell took over and then went hard trade period/draft last year. Clarkson's strategy was still to trade in where he could. A lot of the young kids weren't getting regular games until Mitchell took over and went hard at the draft.

Quite the job, Hawks! Where are the nufties here who accuse the Hawks of tanking?

The existing WA talent doesn't seem to be much good though, as a 116 point thumping to the next generation of East coast talent might highlight. If Reid is that good, get him in an Eagles guernsey. Don't risk passing on him

Definitely man and with the knowledge you could lose one of your best players contracted or not by the time they hit their prime. The teams doing not so well are.prob more likely to lose bigger players while the teams doing well will.probs lose those players that just can't get into a good team. Unless the money and length is just to good to refuse.lol.

Very true, clubs need to get their picks right in the next few years.

Could be a late spurter.lol. as a mid opposition would probs try to drag him to goal square at every opportunity bit as more of a forward that bursts through the middle in stages he would be dangerous as. Be interesting to see what happens come draft time with all.the talk of trading picks and with Tasmania coming in too.

Great win Hawks, l know the Eagles are injury hit but a 116 point win is impressive. I wonder if Barrett thinks the Hawks are still tanking, clown show.

Yeah he is short but he is the type of small forward we really lack, super quick and high pressure. First game this year he got 34 disposals playing as a mid so has a lot of promise. Probably won't put on to much height but an extra couple of cm's wouldn't hurt.
