Sunday’s nationally televised clash appears to be a beauty, as Richmond host Hawthorn at the MCG. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 3:20pm (AEST).

Both these teams played last Sunday, too. And, impressibly, both these teams dominated their respective clashes, both pulling off upsets that hold them in good stead as we had into today’s clash.

Hawthorn faced a strong GWS side at this ground, and thrashed them – dominating the clash and never letting their highly rated opponents come close. Richmond flew to Perth and defeated a lacklustre Fremantle outfit.

Don’t expect either side to win as easily in this clash, as both will likely refuse to give a single inch in this contest – the Hawks moreso, given the Hawks are yet to secure consecutive wins this year.

The most concerning aspect, for the Tigers, is their severe ruck deficit.

An injury to Toby Nankervis last week worsened this, and you’d expect Hawthorn’s Ben McEvoy to exploit inexperienced Ivan Soldo and Richmond’s deficit to give Hawthorn’s midfield use of the ball – although in saying this, Richmond’s midfield group isn’t too bad either, with Dustin Martin beginning to find some form.

Richmond have made two changes for this clash. With the aforementioned Toby Nankervis out with injury, and Jack Ross also taken out of the side, they’ve called upon Ivan Soldo and midfielder Nick Vlaustin to fill the gap.

Hawthorn, for their part, have made no changes to their side after last week’s brilliant win against the Giants.

Prediction
Close and tough to pick, this one will be. Both sides are coming off comfortable and impressive wins, and both would love to win again to keep their momentum going.

Richmond’s injuries – particularly to their ruck stocks – are concerning, but the Hawks have been a little inconsistent this year. In the end, I’m going with the Hawks.

Hawthorn by 7 points.

A lot of the second tier players were some of the best on the day but ran out of puff at the end which affected their skill errors. Just happy there getting regular games, will bode well for the future.

Hawks missing some major players also but losing 2 talls in a game certainly didn't help. Hawks had plenty of opportunity at the start to put scoreboard pressure on but didn't capitalise. Hawks not in the same league, at full strength tigers will be too good for any team unfortunately.

Tigers missing so many of their best players though.

I only saw the last 15 minutes but there were lots of skill errors from Hawks 2nd tier players.

Bit of both. Hawks started well, but were affected by injuries (two on the bench for much of the game). Richmond looked superb, and were superb, for a lot of it, too.

Hawks weren't bad at all Peter, tigers are a better side and that came through. Losing Mcevoy early and then Lewis early in the third term didn't help there cause either. I don't it's a case of one being good and the other bad. You can still play well reasonably and get beaten. Hawks are simply not good enough to go with the top sides.

Hawthorn did start well, and were competitive throughout much of the first half, but they fell away badly in the second half. In their defence, they were missing two from their bench for much of the game. Richmond continue their good run of form, and were a lot sharper in attack and, despite missing much of their ruck-stocks, weren't disgraced in that area either. Dustin Martin was dominant with 37 touches and 2 goals, whilst Bachar Houli and Brandon Ellis were also prolific. Ivan Soldo - in his first game of the season - was great, winning hitouts and assisting the Tigers to win clearances - whilst Lynch and Caddy also booted three apiece. Hednerson and O'Meara won Hawthorn's disposal count, whilst Breust and Scully were hot property up forward. Richmond: 14.11 (95) Hawthorn: 8.11 (59)

Q4 '2 GOAL HAWTHORN A late goal for the Hawks, and it's Dylan Moore scoring there. That's his first goal in AFL footy, so that's one nicety for the Hawks as we head towards the conclusion of this clash. Richmond: 13.11 (89) Hawthorn: 8.11 (59)
