The Sydney Swans are looking to continue their surprise surge in 2021 when they take on the struggling St Kilda Saints at their SCG fortress. Keep in touch with the first match of Saturday afternoon footy with live scores on The Roar from 1:45pm (AEST).
Arguably the season’s biggest surprise story meets undoubtedly 2021’s biggest disappointment at the SCG, with the Swans looking to entrench themselves in the top eight. The Saints, by contrast, are simply looking to resuscitate their spluttering season.
Few expected John Longmire’s young team to be challenging for the finals this early, but a 7-4 start to the year and a series of impressive wins have seen them outperform even reigning premiers Richmond to this stage of 2021.
Their form has tapered off slightly of late, with several of the “cygnets” – namely Errol Gulden and Braeden Campbell – suffering injuries to dampen their bright start to AFL life; but a 22-point win in their most recent match, over Carlton, was an impressive triumph against a side that left nothing in the tank.
The Saints’ 20-point win over lowly North Melbourne in Round 11 was about as uninspiring as a win can get. Brett Ratten’s men avoided a humiliating defeat to the wooden spoon favourites, but short of providing Mason Wood a chance to torment his old side with three goals, there wasn’t much else for them to take away from the match besides the four points.
The Swans are a couple of steps above the Roos in the class stakes, and there are plenty of Saints needing to turn around their patchy form if they are to leave Sydney with a second straight win. Chief among them is Bradley Hill, the high-priced recruit Bradley Hill, tagged to just 6 disposals by the Roos’ Bailey Scott. The Swans are stingy by habit, so if Hill thinks he’ll have an easier time of things in Round 12, he’d best think again.

Yeah 12.11 doesn't even tell the full story, they missed some ridiculously easy shots, they really tried to lose that game.

We did precisely that in round 3.

True. Saints got them early, maybe they thought they owed Sydney in the second?

That I don't understand! I just want to see them put the foot down and beat a lower side by more than a couple of goals so they can get some decent percentage. Mind you, that's probably less important than getting the wins so I probably should just take the fact they got the win and move on

We often lift against top teams and get dragged down on a notch by lesser teams.

I'll eat a big slice of humble pie. A win is a win however ugly and this was ugly. However ,Certainly nowhere near their best and extremely lucky to get the win. They don't seem to play the scg all that well these days and their goalkeeping accuracy leaves a lot to be desired. They move on to next wk but if this was a team in the top 5 they were playing today, they would have been smashed

he's never really been a goalkicker despite GOTY. 46 goals from 55 games now. but yes 1.6 is way beyond the pale.

Indicates to me that the swans defence are looking a little gassed with allowing such high quality shots

2 of the 50’s were indeed rubbish. But Swans got away with a bunch in that last half that went unpaid. If the Saints could kick the Umps wouldn’t get a mention.

Well brown paper bag room, do we know which side Gil went for?

Umm.. maybe 20-18.. but the free-kick count doesn’t show frees-missed unfortunately. Saints kicking more problematic than the umps, but that 2nd half was particularly poor from the officials (both ways) Whether you find it biased one-way or not, every week I am just more and more confused over what the rules are.

They are annoying.

21 touches, 7 clearances for Hickey. 27 touches, 4 clearances, and 1 goal for Parker.

No doubt Geelong will find some room for him next year under their non-existent cap.

I'm on strike until they take away the flashing, obnoxious, disruptive banners on the bottom of the screen.

For those questioning the umpires, here is the free kick count: St Kilda 20, Sydney 8,

Good on you for waiting until there was seconds left in the game to do that

That was appalling. Literally could’ve walked it in to the goal. 12.11 doesn’t look that inaccurate until you actually see how bad those 11 behinds were.

An excellent result Angela.
