The West Coast Eagles welcome the Geelong Cats to Leederville Oval, as both sides continue to build towards Round 1 of the home-and-away season. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match, starting from 7:10pm (AEDT).

The JLT Series is exciting because it simply means we are now in touching distance of the home-and-away season.

Sure, it never gives the supporters a true indication into how their side will look and play this season, but it is exciting to see your team take to the field again.

The West Coast Eagles are heading into the 2019 season with plenty of expectation after claiming the premiership last year.

To many, it was unexpected, but when you look at the way they played over the course of the year, Adam Simpson’s side completely deserved it.

Jeremy McGovern, Elliot Yeo and Luke Shuey, who were all instrumental in the Eagles’ success last season, are the big-name players who will feature against the Cats.

Nic Naitanui, Josh Kennedy and Jamie Cripps are still recovering from their injuries, however.

For the Cats, they will be looking for an improvement on last season. They arguably enter the new season with more pressure on them than any other side.

They had a poor 2018 season, finishing eighth and being knocked out of finals in the first week by the Melbourne Demons.

With the list they have got in terms of the average age, it is the type of list that should be entrenched within the top four, rather than limping into the top eight.

Chris Scott’s side have an opportunity to build some momentum towards the 2019 season with a solid JLT Series.

Joel Selwood and Patrick Dangerfield will lead the way in terms of experience against the Eagles, but we will get a look at Gary Rohan for the first time in a Geelong jumper since he arrived at the club from the Sydney Swans.

Gary Ablett has been named as an emergency.

Prediction
It is always difficult to predict the result of pre-season clashes, as most sides are not necessarily looking for a result, but are more trying to implement new ideas and gain match fitness.

However, despite the game meaning very little, I get the feeling the Eagles won’t want to give anyone any reason to question their potential to go back-to-back this season.

West Coast to prevail by 13 points.

Just a pre-season game and both sides would be pleased with positive signs from emerging players. I really liked the overall attacking nature of the game. The 666 rule is a step in the right direction and players will need to get used to it. I am glad that the 666 formation must be maintained where a free kick is paid in the centre square after the bounce - it prevents teams swarming players back to clog the defensive 50. The mix up that occurred with the free kick in the square during this game is understandable, as it is early days. The solution lies with coaches properly drilling their players regarding the rule requirement. The same applies to interchanges after a goal has just been scored and having to comply with the 666 formation - the responsibility must rest with coaches and teams to get it right. The umpires will just have to adjudicate firmly and consistently.

Seeing what you want to see. Even the commentators laughed at the absurdity of claims regarding Kelly 'not looking interested' during the game. Ablett, Tuohy, Bews, S. Selwood, Hawkins, Cockatoo all out. Taylor head knock, Hendo only scheduled to play the 2nd half with Bews and Tuohy missing means 66% of our starting defense wasn't playing for the majority or all of the game. Geelong won't often kick as bad as 8.17 either. Again it is JLT ... it means less than nothing.

Agreed , pre season means nothing really. But who do the cats have to come into the side ? Ablett and Hawk obviously ? Interesting that Kelly didn't look interested or invested with his team mates. Doesn't look happy being there.

With Sheeds dominance how is Gaffy going to fit back in? and Watson looks fantastic, again who comes out for him to come in? A good position to be in I admit but i do wonder. Great game and i admit i do like the 666 rule

It's JLT ... I wouldn't read too much into results. Young side + practice game + long flight + a few rotations down + short turn around until next game + no one else wanting to get injured. I was happy enough with what I saw. Some good signs from a few of the young Cats players. Never expected to 'win' when you compare the two teams named and where it was played.

Interesting that the Eagles kicked five goals in time-on in the game, as opposed to Geelong's none. Fitness? Focus? Coaching? They did it all last year too

The West Coast Eagles have defeated the Geelong Cats by 34 points at Leederville Oval. It may have been a pre-season game, but both sides showed their competitive nature. The Eagles won the game in the first five minutes of the final quarter by kicking three straight goals. When it came to individual performances for West Coast, Dom Sheed collected 39 disposals, with Andrew Gaff the next best reeling in 27 disposals. Jack Darling had a solid game kicking five majors, which no doubt will give him some confidence going forward. As for the Cats, Brandan Parfitt had a really good game in front of goal kicking three majors. Mitch Duncan found the ball 29 times. Also keep an eye on Jordan Clark this season. The Geelong rookie looked very solid on debut. West Coast: 15.9 = 99 Geelong: 8.17 = 65

Agreed, Ball movement was nice and crisp and no injuries as far as I could tell. Was a decent intensity too. just need to get through the jlt derby now without any trouble.
