Shane,I didn’t say it was a free for too high, I said unrealistic attempt. You seem to agree it was an unrealistic attempt, even said there was a free there, but went on to say it was the wrong call. Huh?

A knee to the head in a marking contest has never been considered high contact. The umpire got it wrong. A free was there but not for dangerous contact. It was because Hawkins launched too early and landed before marking the ball. That doesn't make it the right call. It's still the wrong call

There was about half a dozen decisions against Geelong worse than that one in that game.

One other voice in the commentary box - Lingy! Now, I have more respect for Cameron Ling - both as a player and a commentator but he did play nearly 250 games for (wait for it) .... Geelong. Sometimes, you just have to accept that you are wrong and move on, the umpire made the correct call. The opinion of ex Geelong players who are mates of Tom Hawkins carries no weight. I have been complimentary of Geelong for most of the season and consider them to be one of the best run clubs in the league and a genuine threat for the flag - so no little "hate-eco-chamber" here (whatever that is).

LOL how many times do the commentators show they don't know the rules? This incident was so weird that in the video on this article the commentators clearly weren't sure. Maybe they commented differently later in the match or maybe you have misunderstood, I don't know which. I can see the case either way. Probably a free because he went up and was back on the ground before getting his hands on the ball. Unrealistic attempt in the first instance.

Why don't you ask the editors to publish a video of Riewoldt and then comment away? If Riewoldt pushes the same way as Hawkins, then it should be paid. I have for a long time stated here that frees should be paid instead these constant non-decisions.

Lol nice try, but he was simply one of many, literally the entire channel 7 commentary team agreed it was a bs call. But my apologies DTM, you and the tall poppy crowd on Roar must have infinity more in game experience and knowledge than players and legends of the game, who were happily and readily sharing their opinions and agreeing it was a nonsense call. But by all means, don't let me interject on your little hate-eco-chamber, carry on lads, carry on

Because Riewoldt does everything Tommy is being berated for here? -regularly, with little to no repercussion or even mention. Obviously your bias won't permit you to state otherwise, but the fact remains the same, and so does consequent irony of this comment section.

That was not very nice at all Yatts. Like it or not Hawkins has a reputation for being a bit a thug on the field. It appears as though you’re speaking through your s@lty Richmond Obsession unfortunately.

Man, you've got some serious Richmond Obsession going on there. Do you play their Team Song over and over to yourself blindfolded? PTSD is what they call it. (Post Tiger Stress Disorder)

Thanks for the link to the article. But come on. Mooney says he "loves" Hawkins. So should we expect an unbiased view from him? No. Mooney also said that the umpires don't know the rules. I'll back their knowledge and interpretation of the rules ahead of a bloke that played 200 games for the team he is supposedly providing independent commentary on (Mooney probably would have played more games for the Cats had he not been suspended so often). I'm no Geelong or Hawkins hater but a measured view of this incident by any rational and reasonably intelligent person would conclude that the umpire got it right.

As for the pushing of the shoulders, the opposition I feel had to stand his ground. With Hawkins strength it may look like a complete shove

When you thrust your knee up to take a mark, it normally goes into the back so I can see why the ump paid it but then half of the hangers around wouldn’t be marks.

I'd pay the mark. My contention was the Swan only broke sight of the ball when his head collided with the knee with subsequent dropping to the gound. I disagreed with what you said above about no eyes for the ball and then collapsing. He had eyes for the ball but sensed an iminent collusion and protected himself. He was playing fair n square. ----- But TBC I would've paid the mark as Hawkins grabbed it fairly. I like the bloke except for his pushing of the shoulders.

What's Riewoldt got to do with this? Sounds like a classic case of tall poppy syndrome by you Dangersphere10.

Is that a joke? Nobody is more crucified by the tribunal than Hawkins. The only player ever suspended for a jumper punch.

Unfortunately, it’s more a misinterpretation of the Toby Greene problem. Cameron Ling gives it a mark, seems like most commentators did.

He may well be one of the nicest guys playing (don't know him personally) but that is beside the point. On this clip the commentators did not say it was a clear mark, they sounded unsure if anything. Did they change their tune afterwards? As for my comment, I am not blaming Hawkins for Soldo's injury, however it is an indisputable fact that at the very least the push contributed to the severity of the injury. IMO the injury would not have occurred at all otherwise. For some time, many on this site have said they are concerned that players pushing others into packs will cause a severe injury one day. Well, that was exhibit A. My issue is not with Hawkins, it is with the umpiring in that game. If Hawkins or anyone can get away with pushing then they will, but I am not sure if they normally do to that extent. Against Richmond he pushed every time he wasn't in front position.

Umpires now don’t know the rule on a guy protecting himself going for a mark. We were of the belief that Tom Hawkins had every right to protect himself, which he did, took the mark – got it taken off him. “I think they’ll look at that and realise they made a mistake.” How embarrassing for your lot.
