Despite dominating the first two quarters, the Boomers have slumped to a demoralising defeat and fourth-place finish at the Basketball World Cup, losing by eight to France.
Final score
Australia 59
France 67
The Boomers will face off against France for the second time in the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup as they meet to settle the matter of a Bronze Medal. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog, starting from 6pm AEST.
Australia went down in a thriller to Spain in the semi finals, while France was outclassed by the Argentina side. Australia will be looking to bounce back and send a message after their loss to the Spaniards after the game went to two over-times and the players felt disrespected by the referees in the loss.
France will want to get revenge on the Australian side that beat them just a few days earlier.
Their previous matchup saw the Australia team come from behind thanks to a stellar performance from Patty Mills, overcoming the 31 points from Evan Fournier who always finds another level in international play.
Australia has a chance to earn their first medal of any type in international competition and with their previous result against France they will fancy their chances highly.
Can the Australian’s overcome the fatigue from their matchup against Spain, or will the French side reverse their loss from a few days prior and take home the bronze?
A lot of eyes will likely be on Andrew Bogut who unleashed an expletive-riddled tirade at FIBA as he left the court on Friday night.

If there is one thing Australian sports people and teams do well its choke. We've perfected choking in international sports.

Simmons needs to work on his jump shot. He will be a better player for us in the 2020 Olympics because of that. Thon Maker and Dante Exum also skipped the world cup to work on their games. This is the NBA, not the bloated joke leagues that is the AFL or NRL where any kid with a tiny bit of talent can become a star because the standard is so low. These guys have careers outside of playing for Australia.

Simmons will be a real bonus why? Years playing in the big time? MVP awards? Championship rings? International and/or tournament experience? Could it be because while the team who are in China for the honour and privilege of playing for their country, Simmons just couldn’t be bothered? Because he opted to spend his time having government pay his airfares so he could be offended by people in a Melbourne casino not kiss his backside? THAT Ben Simmons? You’re right! My God, what an asset! Make him captain now!

Shame its happended yet again. 4th is a good result and yet again there is no medal. Need to look at why they keep leading and then blow it.

This is disappointing, yet another 4th place finish at a major tournament. They just don’t know how to close a game out when in front, 8 points against Spain and 10 against France. We don’t have the 3 point shooting that these teams have. We were a missed free throw away from the Gold medal game. A lot of talent in this squad but mentally they need to get stronger. If Ben Simmons plays, that will be a real bonus.

And you would have done better exactly how, genius? Come on, you’re so good...

Sad,because we will be a bit better at the Olympics, but other teams, especially the USA will be alot better. Epic fail,we blew it against Spain. 4th place is poor, and we sadly won't do any better at the Olympics.

Game Over. France over run the Aussies late in the game and take the win 67-59. Another year another 4th place for Australia. France was just too strong late in the game as Australia ran out of legs in the 4th. A fantastic performance from both teams all tournament long. Patty Mills will most likely be named in the tournament team and may even win the MVP of the tournament. Turnovers killed the Aussies especially late, Australia had 6 more turnovers than France. Thanks for joining me on what is a sad night for the Aussie basketball fans.

You would have to think that double OT game has played a big part in the Aussies late game struggles here.

Steal by DeColo after a French missed shot. Story of the night for both sides has been turnovers and the Aussies are struggling in the fourth. Albicy with a 3 and it is out to a 7 point lead to the French.

Turnover again for Australia as Mills loses the ball off his foot.
