Australia put themselves on the front foot against India at the Adelaide Oval, but the attention will turn to run scoring on Day 2 as they get a chance to prove the doubters wrong. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 11am (AEDT).
Australia restricted India to a score of 9 for 250 at stumps, but it was a mix of both poor shots and great bowling.
Coming into this series it was clear the hosts’ strength was going to be their all-star bowling attack, featuring Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and off-spinner Nathan Lyon.
They lived up to that billing yesterday, with the three quicks getting four wickets in the first session.
At one point, India were 4 for 41 and in all sorts of bother, and only Cheteshwar Pujara mustered any sort of fight. He had 123 to his name before being freakishly run out by Cummins on what ended up being the last ball of the day.
While some of the middle and lower order made solid impressions, it was hardly enough for the tourists, who went to stumps at 9 for 250. Final men Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami need to add as many runs as possible on Day 2.
We have often seen the best batting conditions at the Adelaide Oval on Days 2 and 3, and as long as Australia can see off the new ball, they will get the chance to capitalise on what looks a good deck for run-scoring.
When India get in the field they will need something of a special day out – limiting runs, putting the pressure on and taking wickets.
Yet, their bowling attack isn’t one which is likely to excel on a pitch which had something in it for the new bowlers, but not a great deal more. And there’s likely to be even less movement in it given the amount of sun and heat it copped yesterday, stripping every bit of moisture out of the pitch.
If that is the case, the Aussie batsmen could be in for a bumper day as they try to build a first-innings lead – but given this series was expected to be low-scoring, there’s no guarantee Australia’s inexperienced order will prosper, even if their side is ahead in the game at the start of play.

I can't see them discarding any bats until after Perth at the earliest, so really my guess is Finch and S.Marsh will have likely three more digs to hold their places.

Last day means 5th day 3.5 or 4th day would be easier to bat compare to 5th

Thanks Scott - looking forward to it! Could be a very interesting day's play as both sides look to take control.

India now paying $1.88 to win, that’s better than house price increases in Sydney....I’d bet your house on India

Given we bat last I'd be putting the house on India if I was a gambling man.

Stuckbetweenindopak, it seems to me you know very little about Test cricket. Did you not see the way Pujara played?? 1. Finch does NOT belong in the side as he has neither the temperament nor technique at Test level and at his age he is not worth persevering with. 2. Ditto Maxwell.

My immediate reaction after today's play would declare khawaja an opener for the rest of the series. He will have all his remaining cricket at 3 once Warner returns. After finchy's approach khawaja is effectively gonna play as an opener anyway, Finch should be used as an aggressor when ball is old maybe just before Paine in the order. Next test I ll bring Maxwell to replace marsh

Interesting that century maker Pujara is the only player in either team not involved in T20 cricket. The game is pretty even. Someone can win this game for their country over the weekend.

Checking expert suggestion "Kohli will be key" -- Checked "Aussie bowled did well to restrict them at 250" -- Checked "Head can not be relied upon" -- Checked "it is a 470+ pitch" -- Checked Waiting for more!! On a serious note, some comeback after 4 down at 80. Some good & proper test cricket application to work with. 2 of top 3 got solid start compared to india's 1. Harris is good enough. I would consider Patterson at 4. Or 3 if UK at 4.That solidifies middle order. One of Renshaw/Burns should be tested in place of finch IMO. If a 5th bowler is required, i would have tested Stoinis.

We wish even if we get 300 after struggling to get 191 in 1 day? It will be a miracle if we take the lead on first innings and this will give The Indians an Oppo to bat as long as they can & get a lead of over 300 or more?

Fair summation there Matt. Batting last could be a huge hurdle to overcome......still...go Aussies!

India faced same number of deliveries yet scored 59 more runs. This has been one of the slowest australian batting displays in memory. Indian bowlers were good and tomorrow should decide the fate of this match. Can’t wait for a cracking days play
