Australia and New Zealand clash at the magnificent SCG in a rematch of the last World Cup Final to kick off the Super 12s of the T20 World Cup. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 6:00pm (AEDT).
New Zealand will come into the contest knowing full well that they won’t be able to put forth their first-choice XI as Daryl Mitchell has not fully recovered from his fractured finger. Who they select as Mitchell’s replacement is likely to be a game day decision based on the conditions in Sydney.
New Zealand aare also coming into the World Cup on the back of a recently concluded tri-series with Bangladesh and Pakistan, and is trying to keep a fine balance between players’ workloads and making sure of their match conditioning.
Including the warm-up game against South Africa – their game against India was washed out – the New Zealand squad has played four matches in seven days, with travel and training in between the games.
Australia are also coming off the back of a recently concluded T20 series, theirs having been a three-game series against England. Australia lost the series 2-0, with the third game being washed out.
The reigning champions are entering their title defence with multiple question marks surrounding the team. Most of the speculation is centered upon the form of Aaron Finch, Glenn Maxwell, and Mitchell Starc.
Finch’s poor run of form continued through the series against England, Maxwell was promoted to opening the batting in the last game to try to get him some more time in the middle to find his form but only managed 8 from nine deliveries, and Starc didn’t play the first game and was relegated from his usual spot opening the bowling for the second game before returning to his opening duties for the final match.
Meanwhile, Tim David has become a part of the first-choice XI for the Australians since the last World Cup, replacing Steve Smith, and adding another finisher to the likes of Matthew Wade and Marcus Stoinis who served them so well in the UAE.
However, we are all on weather watch ahead of this anticipated match as La Niña’s return to Australian shores threatens to play a significant part throughout the World Cup and be especially damaging to the initial fixtures of the Super 12s stage.
Sydney is expecting a very high chance of showers throughout the afternoon and evening and some chance of a thunderstorm too, as per the Bureau of Meteorology.

Ellis is better than K. Richardson

Must say I don;'t follow T20 too closely, but assumed he's been good. Haze is the only non-spinner in the top[ 10 T20 bowlers in the world I believe, so he stays in. IN that case our 4 specialist bowlers are 4 of the following 5: Haze, Jhye R, Kane R, Zampa and Agar.

Yeah ditch Starc and Finch from that group (with Stoinis, who is just too hit and miss). Agree with the 3 that come in. They pick mates though - no accountability. Finch is overweight and - well - I won't say out of form, because I think the decline is terminal.

I am thinking Green, Agar and Smith come in with Stonis, and two of Warner, Finch, Cummins and Star go out. Smith will offer more than Stonis

That average? All IPL and BBL? I suspect there might be some of Afghanistan and Calypso giggle stuff in those numbers. He's Ashton Agar level with the bat. The only difference? Tim gets a go.

This team shambles has been on this path for a while. It has been apparent in every T20 lead up game. It is a leadership issue.

They should rest Cummins for good in the T20is

How about Jimmy Pierson from the Bulls.

He's a power hitting number 6 in T20s with an average of 31 and a strike rate in the 160s - not his fault that the top fell apart - he's the one ballsy choice that the selectors have made in the past 12 months. I'm happy he's been given a chance.

I’m not propping up any argument at all, just replying to you blaming the coach for everything when all and sundry know it’s a grudge you hold. On the actual cricket there’s not a great deal to take from that match when literally everyone had a shocker. NZ had a blinder

Why would you want Cummins in the side?? The guy has been pathetic in t20 cricket for nearly 2 years now.

I did say he went better than most - but when was the last time he played a match winning innings?

Warner Green Smith Marsh Maxwell David Wade Cummins Agar or Kane R (I’d rather Jhye R) Haze Zampa

That was on the basis they still had form. Since then, the Indian form has been standard fare. The thing is, the Mafia keep telling everyone it's only momentary. It needs to change. Are you saying it should be exactly as JL did things? That's what you seem to be implying every time you prop up an indefensible argument with a JL did this or that.

Geez harsh. He was the only one who went half well.

I don't know about "gently". It's more likely to be 'kicking and screaming'.

Starc stays in?

He didn’t against India to lose that series though did he?
Don Freo

No. They are all horribly out of form now. I’ve told you this before. On your argument, we’d still be playing Shane Watson, Brett Lee and Gilly. Players lose form and get older, slower, weaker. Drop them when the form goes. Langer (I don’t know why you keep bringing him up) would have gone past Finch, Smith, Stoinis, Wade (because Philippe is better), Cummins, Starc. Last year’s form is not this year’s form.

Yep. Green for Finch is a no brainer
