Australia get a chance to take a stranglehold on their series against South Africa when they continue their first innings today in the Boxing Day Test. Join The Roar for live scores and rolling coverage of the second day’s play from 10:30am (AEDT).

Pat Cummins’ decision to send South Africa in looked flawed early on Boxing Day, with South Africa reaching 1/56 in the lead-up to lunch. However, some poor shot selection, wonderful fielding and persistent bowling had South Africa four down and in trouble at the first break.

After a superb Marcus Labuschagne catch shortly after lunch, Kyle Verreynne and Marco Jansen went about repairing the South African innings. They put on 112 for the sixth wicket; however, when Verreynne fell for 52, the wheels fell off. Jansen top scored with 59, but a score of 189 continues the Proteas’ run of scores below 200.

Cameron Green took his first Test five-wicket haul with figures of 5/27. The South Africans were bundled out for 189, losing their last five wickets for just ten runs.

After a solid start in return, Australia lost Usman Khawaja when the score was on 21. Australia advanced to 45 at the close, with David Warner and Labuschagne undefeated at stumps.

Day 2 is going to be pivotal. If South Africa’s pace attack can make inroads, honours could be even after two days. However, if Australia get away, they could well be setting up themselves for a rare home series win over the Proteas.

Insecure? Insecurity seeks permission from others to have a view. Your reactions are very strange; fragile. If you don't want an alternative view, don't be wrong so often.

I almost feel sorry for you because your comments show how insecure you are. I’ll leave this thread now, but I’m sure you’ll be insecure enough to leave another comment…

Why's that? That's well and truly conceded if you're resorting to that. You're still flying solo, with an argument no one supports, on a thread that's 3 days old, that no one's reading apart from you and me because we get notified of a response.

I’m doing fine. You on the other hand…it’s just embarrassing. I’m almost feeling sorry for you.

That's now the 7 millionth person who sees it that way. The rest (including you, it seems) don't know enough about how running between the wickets works.

hilarious don . average in 20s in England . completely different pitches and average of 9 and worst time series in cricket history takes some beating . average is very good at McG and scg and alas he makes runs at the ground

That’s not now. His current innings is 200no. I think we’d all prefer current form. Last UK Ashes indeed! Years ago. I think he struggled in an U11s Carnival once, as well.

An average of 9 in last uk ashes is the worst opening series average in the history of cricket in 100 plus years so he's not better than most in England . very simple select warnner in aus but not in England

my narrative is pretty clear he's a flat track bully most of his runs come from Australia and sth Africa . he's Damm good at home I've never doubted that but with an average of 24 and 26 in India and england he's Damm poor in those countries and that's really not going to change

Here's Damien Fleming's verdict: "I also think if Marnus hadn’t actually stopped – he started running and tried to stop, but Warner was committed – he would have got there."

Well, it was only a single. Getting them back on before the next ball was a challenge…

It’s still selfish after a 200no?

That's what you should have done when the holes in your argument became apparent

Not only have you refused to watch the replay, you’re not reading my responses. Or is it that you’re not understanding them? Either way, I think I’ll leave you to your blind puppy love for Davey. Enjoy!

You're the one pushing against the logic. Your only argument is, "None of the rest of you watched it. I did, though."
