Winning back the faith of the cricket public has been as difficult as winning matches of late for the Australians, and their uphill task with the white ball continues here.
In a sole T20 match, they will again take on South Africa as the Gold Coast plays host to an International match for the first time. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage, from 7:20pm (AEDT).
There were a handful of positives for both sides in the One-Day series just completed, but South Africa undoubtedly outplayed the home side.
While Australia’s 50-over struggles don’t look like resolving in the short-term, they have become a much improved T20 side one might say.
That aside, they were embarrassingly dominated 3-0 only last month in the format at the hands of Pakistan.
It may be a one-off match, but the Australians will be wanting to avenge for an underwhelming ODI series marred by unacceptable batting failures in the top order.
I will be very interested to see which pace bowling unit can gain ascendency and the extent to which both sides use their spin options to take control.
The tourists have the in-form players right now, but it would be silly to discount the extraordinary T20 capabilities within Australia’s squad.
The line-ups entering this clash should be very similar to those seen in the One-Day series – where South Africa cruised to a 2-1 victory – with the squads largely the same.
Cricket Australia will be praying for improved attendances live and televised, following the well-documented dwindling number who observed the series which concluded on Sunday.
South Africa made light work of the XI cobbled together by CA, which featured numerous T20 guns, setting them an insurmountable 202 to win.
Their top order again among the runs in a quality display. For Australia, this match will be followed by three against the arriving Indians, commencing next Wednesday.
Australia
It’s not an easy one to pick, but for this match I’ve put the microscope on Chris Lynn. We know what he can do in this format, through multiple seasons of carnage with the Brisbane Heat.
That said, he’s yet to transfer this to the International scene, despite limited opportunities, and looked unsettled in the one-day outfit.
It might just be his most dangerous format where we see him coming into his own. If Australia stand any chance to have some T20 success in the next fortnight, they will need Lynn clearing the ropes.
South Africa
The Proteas enter this match with a wave of players in good form. Look out for Aiden Markram, who got some starts in the One-Day matches, looking very good at times before finding ways to get out.
His preparation was helped with a quickfire 45 in the warm-up match, and his quality is already obvious.
Australia
Aaron Finch, Alex Carey, Ashton Agar, Jason Behrendorff, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Chris Lynn, Glenn Maxwell, Ben McDermott, D’Arcy Short, Billy Stanlake, Marcus Stoinis, Andrew Tye, Adam Zampa.
South Africa
Faf du Plessis, Farhaan Behardien, Quinton de Kock, Reeza Hendricks, Imran Tahir, Heinrich Klaasen, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Chris Morris, Lungi Ngidi, Andile Phehlukwayo, Dwaine Pretorius, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi.
If Australia can begin to rectify their batting mishaps, they will give themselves every chance.
South Africa just seem to have their measure at present though in the short forms and should continue to here.

What's australia have against spin? Maxwell a poor spinner still with the best economy last night. SA best economy was also a spinner we are tactically the dumbest team in 20/20

Matt, you're happy with Finch? He's not giving much leadership from the front. I suppose he was 3rd top score...but 7 is not setting much of an example.

Must have a real grasp of the situation then.

Very similar to my lineup and completely agree with Khawaja and spinning options but a slightly altered lineup. McDermott could be the sole wk and Tuner should come in as a second spin option the way he played agasinst Sri Lanka he was good enough to be a sole bowler. Khawaja Warner Lynn Maxwell Finch(has succeeded in this role) McDermott/Pierson (wk) Turner /M.Marsh NCN Tye Starc Lyon/Agar(Agar at 8)

So what do we need to fix before the next T20 World Cup? 1. Bowling tactics. Let’s bowl to a field. What has happened to the straight full ball with cover at long off and long on? Or the wide Yorker to a sacked offside field? 2. Opening power play. Warner comes back to open, but if that’s not an option Khawaja must partner Finch. Short to go and Lynn to 3. 3. Stoinis is a problem. He is yet to produce even one good T20 innings. M Marsh comes in. Or if the Stoinis love is too powerful then McDermott goes. 4. Starc comes into the bowling rotation at the expense of the Dorff, but you need a group anyway and the four who played today plus Star are the best we have with good variety. 5. BUT you do not play 4 pace bowlers and no spinners. It’s madness. It’s like the selectors have been asleep to the current wat T20 is played. Agar comes in for McDermott and plays ever time. And I would strongly consider leaving out one of the four paceman and playing Nathan Lyon. Finch Khawaja/Warner Lynn Maxwell M Marsh Carey Agar Starc/Dorff Tye Stanlake/NCN Lyon That looks like our best T20 side

Stoinis has been good in ODI but very poor in T20 with a batting avg of 12 compared to Marsh's avg of 21 and a similar bowling avg. Marsh is a better option with Christian being my prefered option but unfortunately to old for selectors to consider. Ben Cutting could be a good option if he just bowls the one over and leave Tunrer with 3 which is fine because he is a very decent bowler.

I do not understand why agar doesn't get picked ,he is a genuine spin all rounder.

South Africa 6/108 (10) - du Plessis 27, de Kock 22, Hendricks 19, Tye 2/18, Coulter-Nile 2/19 defeat Australia 7/87 (10) - Maxwell 38, Lynn 14, Carey 8, Morris 2/12, Ngidi 2/16, Phehlukwayo 2/21 by 21 runs Another extremely disappointing result for Australia, especially with the bat, in the shorter forms. South Africa walk away with an impressive win, continuing to outplay Australia as they have done in the last fortnight. They started well at the top of the order as Hendricks and de Kock set the tone. While Australia did well to peg things back in the latter overs, the score of 108 was still excellent from just 10 overs and never easy to run down. Once again, Australia's batting crucifies their chances. Unusual shot selection and tactics again the downfall, as the top order stacked with hitting power failed to deliver, leaving Glenn Maxwell and co. in the familiar position of too much work to do later on. The well-rounded bowling and fielding performance of the Proteas was reflective of how determined they looked to win this shortened match, and end their tour on a high. Plenty of head-scratching, questions to come and work to be done for Australia in what many anticipate to be a tough summer for fans who love seeing wins. Not their night at all tonight, and you wonder how much their approach may need to change to get things on track. They have little time to respond here, as the first of three T20I matches against India comes up on Wednesday night in Brisbane. I guess at least we got some cricket in, especially given how it looked a few hours ago. That's about it from me, thanks to those who tuned in! Please remember to share your thoughts here by dropping a comment below. Cheers

Sorry forgot about Agar. Agar or Lyon would be good options.

We lost because our top order is terrible right now. But I’m with you Don, how is it that Australia are the ONLY side in Workd cricket to not understand the importance of spinners in limited overs cricket? It’s so frustrating.

Disappointing Khawaja really has to be in this team. He was our best batsmen in the last T20 world cup. Preferred lineup Khawaja Finch Lynn Maxwell McDermott/Dunk (wk) Turner (spin all rounder) M.Marsh(pace all rounder) NCN Starc/Cummins Tye Lyon

So Maxwell doubled the next best score . We have been told runs in any format matter. Has he any test chance?

9.6 Ngidi to Maxwell - It's a full-toss, it hasn't been called a no-ball, and Maxwell is caught down the ground. Salt rubbed into Australia's feelings there, as the Proteas ice the match. Maxwell c Behardien b Ngidi 38 (23) FOW: 7-87 And that's the match here, Australia have fallen 21 runs short, losing seven wickets in their ten overs.
