A Kurtis Patterson maiden century was the highlight of Day 2 at Manuka Oval, and after declaring Australia were able to take three Sri Lankan wickets before stumps.
Final score
Australia 5/534d
Sri Lanka 3/123
Australia are in a strong position from which to take another win over Sri Lanka when the second Test contiues on Saturday at Manuka Oval. Join The Roar live scores and a live blog of Day 2, starting from 10:30am AEDT.
Australia looked like they might be in trouble early on the first day as Marcus Harris, Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne all fell cheaply, Australia’ most experienced bastman Khawaja going for a three-ball duck.
However that left Travis Head and Joe Burns at the crease and they would go on to record and incredible 308-run partnership which would see both players make centuries.
Head lost his wicket for 161 later on, but Burns remains at the crease with a chance of making a double-century, partnered with young gun Kurtis Patterson.
The Aussies will look to build up as big of a first-innings total as possible, but expect them to bowl at some point today whether that’s through being bowled out or opting to declare.

And that is stumps on Day 2. It’s been a good, hard grafting day of Test match cricket. Australia obviously well and truly ahead but Sri Lanka showing that they can bat on this flat pitch when they applied themselves. Awesome hundred today by Kurtis Patterson, he looked untroubled at the crease and it will definitely be a special moment for him and his family and friends. Tim Paine then made a selfless declaration ending Australia’s innings at 5 for 534. Sri Lanka started positively, their opening stand putting on 90, their highest since the New Zealand series. Runs flowed easier for the Lankans until Karunaratne was sent to hospital after copping a blow to the back of the head from a sharp Pat Cummins bouncer. Three more wickets would fall as the Sri Lankans ended the day 3 for 123. Hope you all enjoyed my coverage today, we look forward to seeing you all again on The Roar tomorrow for Day 3 of the 2nd Test. Thanks for you company, cheers!

Lyon to Perera Beautiful offspin bowling. Around the wicket, lovely curve, dip, turn and bounce to the left hander. Kusal is drawn forward, looks to drive expansively but shoulders arms at the last second. He doesn’t like getting forward. Sri Lanka 3/122 1st Innings Overs 41.5

Starc to Chandimal WICKET! Oh dear! Rookie mistake by Chandimal. Ducks under this bouncer but he throws his gloves up in defence. The ball kisses his top glove and is easily snaffled by Paine. Not what Sri Lanka need going late into Day 2. It was a very poor shot, he was clearly in two minds. Sri Lanka 3/120 1st Innings Overs 40.3
