Brisbane Heat play the Melbourne Stars in the 53rd game of the Big Bash League this season and it will be a match that has big consequences on who makes it to the finals. The Gabba in Brisbane will host this one and it starts at 8:40pm AEDT. You can follow it live with The Roar below.

It’s a game that can decide who the final four teams are.

The Heat need to win it to remain in the competition, having garnered just 11 points from their 13 games to the fourth-placed Stars’ 12 from 12.

A loss for Brisbane means they would be out of the reckoning, but with that they will also end the hopes of the sixth-placed Sydney Thunder.

The Thunder’s only chance is for the Heat to win this and for Stars to lose their final game before Thunder can win their final game with a margin that overcomes Heat.

What this means is that a win for the Stars will end all permutations as far as qualifying for the final four is concerned.

That Brisbane have made a late dash towards having an outside chance of making it to the finals is part-creditable, part-lucky.

Lucky because of the way they got away in their game against the Sydney Thunder with a point after a power-failure ended the game early.

However, going into the final three matches of the league stage, the Heat had just seven points and looked like they were left without momentum and on their way out to a meek finish to the tournament.

They had gone without a win for four matches going into their game against the Perth Scorchers and a Chris Lynn-led half-century steered them to a six-wicket win that arrested that record.

This was followed by a chase of 177 against the Adelaide Strikers that left them reeling at 3/18 at one stage but a 50-ball 90 off the bat of Matt Renshaw and half-century by Brendon McCullum in his last BBL season, guided them out of trouble and to their fifth win.

Now, another victory against the Stars will take them to 13 points, finishing their engagements at that level.

It would also leave the Stars with no option but to win their final league encounter to qualify for the final-four stage.

The Stars batting has been majorly held together by Marcus Stoinis and to a lesser extent by Ben Dunk but they have otherwise struggled to get going. Even Glenn Maxwell’s numbers haven’t looked as fascinating.

Stoinis leads the bowling charts for the Stars too, having played just nine games and still picked up the joint-highest wickets for his team with Dwayne Bravo. And yet, 14 wickets is 10 short of the top wicket-taker this season.

All of which makes for an exciting between two teams who have both had their struggles in the season.

This win keeps the Heat in the tournament. But McCullum is done playing in Brisbane, he bows out with a win. The loss for the Stars means they need to win the final league game to qualify for the finals. A loss would invariably mean the Heat would go through unless the Thunder can do something similar to what the Heat did tonight. Phew, what a game. Cannot believe what I just saw.

Unbelievable what I have just seen. First, Stoinis batted like he was on another pitch to his fellow batsman, hitting an 80 but the Stars managed to put on just 156 in their 20 overs. It was below-par, at that stage, probably by 10-15 runs. Turns out Bryant and Cutting had been given a memo telling them to score 300 in the 20. They did it well, chasing it down in a mere 10 overs. Cutting made 81, Bryant made 71, both at a strike-rate of over 235 and both unbeaten.

They would've needed about 300 to be fair though....

Bloody hell, 158 in ten overs?? That's insane! Where was this when we needed it a couple weeks ago

That is the end of that. The Heat have won with a six over the long-on fence!

The Stars were on track for 200+ Maddison killed all their momentum, although he was batting out of position He needs to be batting top 3, he played t20 cricket in England during the offseason averaged 35 with a SR of 138 while batting 3.

Another one. Six. Cutting's eighth six. Not short enough from Lamichanne but he swings hard and gets the maximum. A single off the next ball means they need 5 from 61.

Even Lamichanne hasn't been spared. Slightly shorter in length and Cutting has got his front leg out of the way and whacked it over wide long-on. Six more. 12 more neeed.

This isn't going to last too long by the looks of things. Maddinson, mic-ed up with the commentators, has failed to latch on a relatively tough catch at deep mid-wicket and ends up lobbing it over for a six. This was after Bravo had gone for six off the first three balls too. A wide, a brace and a dot follows. 19 needed from 11 overs.

Dropped. Bryant tries to take on Lamichanne but mistimes it to deep mid-wicket... ...and Gotch at deep mid-wicket has dropped a fairly simple catch. Makes it eight from the over. Some respite. But the match's already long gone. 34 needed from 72.

Sandeep Lamichhane is into the attack for the Stars. Too late. The required-rate is now around three an over.

What is happening here? Forget Maxwell, forget Stoinis, this is Zampa now going for runs. Scratch that, he's going for dozens. Cutting has brought up his 50 by smashing him for three sixes off successive deliveries, 17-ball half-century. 21 off the over. That makes it 67 from the last three overs. 0/115 in 7.

Wow, that was an incredible Power Play. Some great hitting, but a lot from conventional shots!

Welcome, Maxwell. A six down the ground, a six over long-off, a four to bring up his 50, Bryant and then a four off the pull before just a couple of runs makes it 22 from the sixth over. Maxwell and Stoinis have combined figures of 2-0-46-0. 0/94 in 6.

Glenn Maxwell comes on now. Just the sixth over and it feels like the last throw of the dice!

What an over. What a wonderful over! Cutting sent up the order for a reason and this was that reason. He has taken on Stoinis and how. It begins with Bryant knocking a lofted drive back over the bowler for a six before Cutting smashes two more maximums and finishes off the over with a four. 24 from the over!

Marcus Stoinis, golden touch with the bat and ball this season, will take up the attack now. Done his bit with the bat today, now bowling.
