The Bushrangers finished with top spot on the table at the end of the regular season, and it’s their incredibly strong bowling attack which New South Wales will have to be wary of in this match.

Led by Scott Boland, who was yesterday named Sheffield Shield player of the year, the attack has demolished everyone in their path this season, including New South Wales just a couple of matches ago.

That win should fill them with confidence ahead of final with changed rules this year.

In short, there will be no more drawn finals, unless the rain prevents 270 overs of cricket being played. Instead, bonus points in the first 100 overs of the first innings would decide the premiers if a drawn match was the case.

» The Sheffield Shield final bonus points system explained

While Boland leads the attack for Victoria, he is backed up strongly by James Pattinson, Peter Siddle and spinner Jon Holland, who also had a sensational season.

Given the Blues batting line-up leaves a little bit to be desired, it could be a mismatch, and the New South Wales stars must stand up.

Daniel Hughes and Kurtis Patterson – who was selected for Australia on the back of Shield form – will need to lead the way for the Blues with strong technique and patience at the crease. They have scored 699 runs at 41 and 629 runs at 39 respectively during the season, while Nick Larkin has also been strong.

If Hughes and Larkin at the top of the order can see off the new ball and frustrate the Victorian quicks, then the momentum of the battle might begin to shift.

On the other foot though, the Blues attack is also strong, with Trent Copeland leading the way through his accuracy. He has also had an outstanding season, and needs to find a way to stop Marcus Harris – who has scored more than 1000 runs this Shield season – building a platform for the home side.

As is the case with any final, the toss will be important, although not as much as in previous years thanks to the bonus points rule. In fact, teams may even prefer to bowl first, putting them in a position to ensure they can be ahead on bonus points through a measured run chase at the end of 100 overs in the first innings.

Prediction
There isn’t a heap in this match, but Victoria are at home and defeated New South Wales a couple of weeks ago. They should hang onto the Sheffield Shield for another year.

Victoria in a close one.

Ah, I'm with you now! I've actually been enjoying the post-BBL stuff. There isn't much else on to distract from it, which is a nice change.

The Shield has been devalued to a glorified practice comp, so when you see the actual history it jolts you back to what the comp used to be like.

STUMPS That's the end of Day 1 of the 2019 Sheffield Shield final. That last half hour was very, very important for Victoria as Chris Tremain and James Pattinson battled their way to stumps. They finish the day with runs on the board, and given the pitch is doing the odd little bit and might break up later in the game, it's pretty much even stevens. The Blues though, after being asked to bowl first, will take six wickets on the board at the end of Day 1. Over: 90 Victoria: 6/261

This should be the final overs of the day. I thought there was 96 in a Shield day, but the commentators reckon it's 90, and we certainly won't start a 91st before 5:30 ticks over. Anyway, Copeland to bowl it as Pattinson and Copeland continue to survive. Been enough shouts and half chances for the entire match in this last half hour or so. Feels like just about every ball. Over: 89 Victoria: 6/261

Well, the Blues have dropped some chances today, and here is another! Around the wicket was Copeland, shaping in at Pattinson, who got a thick edge. Nevill was going down the leg side and just couldn't adjust his position to snare the catch. Over: 87.3 Victoria: 6/261

Maddinson was in great form, too. He's a big loss for Victoria in this game.

Need to get them out before the 100 over mark and keep them under 300.

Well, Tremain is doing the old survival act out there. Doesn't look confident in the slightest, but for now at least, is still at the crease as they fight for every run they can get their hands on. They say don't judge a pitch and game until both teams have batted, but the Blues are looking good at the moment. Just one run from those last four overs. Over: 85 Victoria: 6/254

Maddinson opened the batting when Harris was in the test team, then moved down the order when Harris came back in. I’m surprised Sam Harper hasn’t got much of a run in the shield team, they could give him the gloves and push gotch up the order.

That was a sensational innings from Harris though. Has scored well over half of Victoria's runs to this point in their innings, and has held things together when it looked like they were going to crumble. He was the key coming in, and that's exactly the way it's played out. Victoria need something from their tail here though. In a spot of bother right now. This pitch looks more like a 400-par pitch, rather than 300. Over: 81.0 Victoria: 6/253
