Australia’s second innings will resume at 3/124 at Edgbaston today, as Tim Paine’s side will be looking to build on the 34-run lead they have accumulated against England. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of Day 4, starting from 8pm (AEST).

England resumed Day 3 at 4/267, as they looked to chase down Australia’s first innings total of 284.

Despite being in a commanding position, England were not able to fully capitalise. Australia bowled superbly in the first session of Day 3.

Ben Stokes was dismissed shortly after getting to 50, as Pat Cummins found the edge of the 2019 World Cup hero.

Rory Burns shortly followed, but he did have 133 runs next to his name. Nathan Lyon got one to really spin, and Paine took a superb catch.

Lyon claimed another scalp, as Moeen Ali had a brain-fade, which resulted in him leaving a straight one and being bowled for zero.

Jonny Bairstow looked scratchy. Peter Siddle found the edge of his bat, and David Warner took a good catch in the slip cordon to dismiss him for eight.

Just as Australia did get on a roll, Chris Woakes and Stuart Broad put on a partnership of 65 runs. That partnership ended when Cummins bounced out Broad, who was dismissed for 29.

James Anderson did not last long afterwards, as he was dismissed for three. England were bowled out for 374, which gave them a first innings lead of 90.

Australia’s second innings got off to an awful start, as Warner was dismissed by Broad for eight runs.

Cameron Bancroft shortly followed, as he was caught at short-leg off the bowling of Ali. He departed with seven runs next to his name.

Usman Khawaja was travelling along nicely, but he was dismissed for 40, as Stokes got him with a superb delivery.

It was Steve Smith (46 not out) and Travis Head (21 not out) who steadied the ship, as they got through till stumps. Bad light forced the day to end with 30 minutes of play still remaining.

If Australia are to set a competitive total, then there is no denying that ultimately will be down to Smith.

Australia will not need a massive total to defend, as the wicket will favour Lyon drastically in the final innings, but they still need a decent score nonetheless.

An interesting conclusion to this Test potentially awaits. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of Day 4, starting from 8pm (AEST).

Interestingly Steve Waugh selected carey in his starting line up. He's seen a few cricketers in his time wasn't too bad as captain or with the bat either. Just in case Warnes cricket mind is not good enough too

Whats wonderful is Australia is decimating them as we have this objective discussion .

A few good points but we are going back in history now . Carey won't be given a chance the decision was made . Only Wade can replace him here. Carey had a wonderful world cup on these very pitches against the best bowlers in the world . Labasuchagne offers spin leg side which would be very handy . Extra bowler would be huge. Ive seen enough in this test to warrant the loss of runs due to paine being more than enough an argument to put wade behind the stumps and have the extra all rounder in

Wade missed that many chances off Lyon he almost ended his career. He dropped AB de Villiers in that famous drawn Adelaide test and cost Hilfenhaus his 100th test wicket (and probably Aus the game). He was dumped from the test side first time because his keeping wasn’t test standard. I’m not trying to be grumpy, I just find it hard to fathom that anyone could deem Wade as good a keeper as Paine. Paine was plucked out of near-retirement because the selectors and Lehmann judged him the best gloveman in the country. I reckon Carey is close enough that a good shield season with bat and gloves will get him in, but he needs to show he can transfer that WC form into the long game. And if Carey’s not keeping them he’s nowhere near the side for mine. Surely if Wade took the gloves then Labuschagne would come in. Patterson and Burns should be ahead of Carey as a pure batsman too!

Once again I don't think Paine is anything more special than Wade behind the stumps. Thats good he's made some field changes for Lyon. Nothing smith wouldn't have covered though . I think I'm being positive though trying to promote better tactical play saving runs from opposition and scoring more is all. We can only go on what see . Its not just one error its several james. Anyway as I said its moot given CA policy right now and delighted the boys are doing amazingly well. Hoping for a victory. By no means personal . I think there are plenty with the same view point . Also many would be reluctant to suggest smith return as captain which is their view or to step someone else up. Im stuggling to see what Paine adds that can't be replaced with more runs. Wade can do the job . Would give labaucghange a start and an extra bowler or marsh at lords. Provides more flexibility james. Big case for it I think

Gower the Englishman who wasn’t a keeper, sure. Btw Nasser is also praising Paine’s field changes for Lyon as we speak. The axe is pretty obvious. You’ve taken every opportunity to sink the boot in, even asserting opinion as fact. Still waiting to hear who is the better keeper too.

I just think Paine not all that much better than Wade really , Ive just seen Paine make an error . Carey granted is a little behind on keeping but theres every chance wade and carey could also just have made that catch. Paine is having a poor test as captain and on the field for me . We have other options now with keepers who can make more runs. Wade made a ton. Carey would be the smokey that could bat if wade kept? Its very potent in terms of potential runs whereas paine is failing with the bat of late.

Im just going on what I see. Gower agreed in commentary it was poor keeping. No axe just facts

Please forward on what pattinson has said keen to read. Pattinson is also not cummins. He left cummins from bowling high to Broad. Cummins has the pace. Just going on what I saw. If cummins can execute the way he did with a short ball at the 80 over point are you saying they couldn't bowl short.? It didn't seem to be a problem for stokes. Im not buying this excuse at all. There were plenty of balls t head height in the first innings. I didn't see it being attempted much

All I’m doing is taking what Pattinson says at face value. If you basically don’t want to believe him then that’s your call. He says they had the plan to bowl short and were having trouble trying to execute so abandoned it. And if that ball from Siddle hadn’t jagged off the seam it would have gone down leg side. Completely understandable that Paine was moving that way. I’ve spent enough time wicket keeping that I can appreciate that. This axe you’re grinding is getting a bit over the top. Let’s cut to the chase: who in Australia is a better test standard keeper than Paine?

And there you go Paine just went the wrong way behind the stumps and missed a gettable catch, went wrong way off siddle . could have had roy. Another error from paine , wicketkeeping superior. Maybe not..

Don't be sorry . just commenting on what Paine did and what we actually saw. I think your speculating , its paines job to manage his bowlers. 80 run partnership for broad was way too high without short length attacking his upper body . When they did he went out. Just the facts james, his batting was terrible for a captain, he's not leading well. He missed a field placement this AM already in around the leg side of the bat where roy is prone to popping it up. Plenty of errors and we are seeing them not speculating james . Nassar and Warne are picking up on it but obviously you know more than them

Sorry but that just sounds like you’re looking for things to blame Paine for. Paine is just listening to his bowlers and trusting their judgement. You cant possibly call that a bad thing.

His tactics for Broad was pretty stupid too. I just can't stand him as a test batsman or captain. The sooner he is out of the side, the better.

Cummins did just fine bowling short to get the bounce and him out, I can't buy that for 80 runs of partnership they did not target his weakness against the short ball. I place that on Paines poor guidance

Forgot the non review of burns and he's behind the stumps. Costly 120 runs but your right lyon didn't go up either . Poor judgement though

I did notice that he used Smith for some fielding tactics. I'd call that sensible delegation, given Smith's experience in the role, and I also think it somewhat undermines your point that Paine's field setting were poor (although I disagree with that assertion anyway). If you read what Pattinson said re the bumpers, it's hard to blame Paine. The initial intent *was* to bowl short to Broad, but there was barely any bounce in the pitch and they were struggling to get the ball high enough so they changed tactics at the bowlers' suggestion. It was only later when Cummins basically started aiming at his own shoes (because nothing else had worked) that they were able to get anything around Broad's ears. The declaration was fine as far as I'm concerned (and Ian Chappell and Steve Waugh gave it the tick of approval). They batted themselves into a strong position and then had half an hour at England before stumps. Batting conditions were still good. Besides, the whole brains trust would have sat down at the tea break and worked out a declaration plan. It's not as if Paine just randomly decided himself that the time was right. Really, of what you listed above I think the only thing that could actually be classified as a 'huge mistake' was his shocking dismissal. Everything else is just down to arguable opinions and hindsight.

A poor decision by paine yesterday to bat too long needed 12 to 14 overs at them but no more for me. Also his shot selection to go out when we needed him was reckless first innings cost us runs and also he did not target broad high early on with the short ball until he had formed an 80 run partnership which could have cost australia 2 hrs of time in this test as we needed to chase those runs and declare later. Poor captaining for me in this match saved by smith and the bowlers who were unlucky

No problem James . glad you asked mate 1) Awful shot selection with the bat when australia was in trouble first innings , he needlessly hit the ball airborne to the boundary to get caught. Terrible reckless batting as captain when his side was in trouble. Cost us potential big runs and confidence . Smith or Waugh would not have done that. was the most reckless batting of the day when no need 2) Bowling tactics to broad awful . England in trouble at 8 down and he does not direct any bowler to attack broads known weakness for the highball. He adds an 80 run partnership which is huge in the context of this match. As soon as cummins and co attack him with bouncers he folds and is dismissed 80 runs too late . Could cost australia as was up to two hours lost in the match to make the runs and then for us to chase them 3) Batted too long yesterday declaring 5 to 7 overs too late which could have allowed out attack to settle and claim a wicket or two yesterday Ill throw in an extra 4) his fields were criticized according to warne and commentators and I (and many others) tend to think warne is excellent with fields and tactics but allowed england to get some more runs. He was actually leaning on smith to make fielding choices if you noticed who started directing the field
