Illegal 'fake fielding'... or a genius tactic by Quinton de Kock?

By The Roar / Editor

A controversial move by South Africa’s Quinton de Kock to help run out Pakistan’s Fakhar Zaman has proved controversial.

By rules it's not allowed, if you cheat, even at that moment you got clever then the other, it will always be cheating, but sadly matach refree and ground umpires didn't do the job. If its is clever to do such things, then it should be allowed by rule for everyone.

So if a batsman plays a shot, starts running, then gets back in his crease...is that fake running ? Should he be penalised because the fielder thought he was going for a run ?

Just an afterthought.. If Markram also followed De Kocks so called feint and threw the ball to the wrong end. It would be a very different conversation.

From memory Warne was caught behind early on in his innings but wasnt given out......Back in the days before the 3rd Ump.....It was a sweet moment for us Kiwi's when he got out on 99 but in the end it just added to the whole Warne story really... I think the 4 Kiwi tons was and maybe still is a record for NZ cricket....

That was that match at the Waca where Warnie's score was the highest score for the aussies in that innings, yet FOUR kiwis all scored hundreds in the innings before...even the keeper Parore.

He is quite a player, that's for sure. Pant may be as talented with the bat, but de Kock, like Adam Gilchrist, is also an excellent keeper.

Actually Bernie he never wanted the job 1st place..Graeme Smith spoke him into it.. Not everyone does want it. Think guys like Kallis even Amla who after a few games handed the captaincy back.. Quinnie took it on and had a friggin nervous breakdown on the Paki tour., so it was taken away from him.. Good news tho.. As captain he couldn't buy a run.. Now quickly getting back to the player we all know he is. Some players thrive on it others don't.

Why is that BTW JN? Did he not like the job? Or did he feel it was too much on his plate in addition to wicket keeping?

Actually an intriguing series being played between 2 evenly matched sides.. 1st ODI got decided very last delivery, yet this incident is the only reporting or referencing to the series on The Roar so far....

I already won that $1000 from a mate, the minute you made that comment. It was predictable, Spruce. Not sure Hughes ever went out there thinking he just wanted to not die. I'll bow to your superior knowledge of the mindset of International cricketers though when they go out to bat.

havnt been to many cricket games eh! Sledging is done whilst the bowler runs in...and after a batsman has hit the ball and is running...I think thats ball in play!!!!!

Law 20.6 also brings this unwarranted contradiction to life, not forgetting to note 20.6.2 which refers back to 20.4.2.5

What do you think the fielders constantly sledging the batsmen are trying to do if its not to distract him? Fielders distracting batsmen this way has happened from day 1 so its hardly illegal is it? ALL that activity takes place while the ball is dead, not in play. It was a good try, but you've got to be a certain height to ride the big boy rides.

It doesn’t become a dead ball until the umpire/s deem/s a distraction has occurred. Dead ball being called does not make what happened prior to the call illegitimate or null and void. A legitimate delivery was still bowled, played and scored off prior to the alleged distraction occurring. It is illogical to require the fielding side to re-bowl the ball, and with penalty runs awarded as well as runs off the bat it amounts to an unnecessary double punishment. The ball always goes dead before the next delivery. There are only three instances that traditionally require a ball to be re-bowled once it goes dead: 1. A call of wide 2. A call of no-ball and 3. The ball did not leave the bowler’s hand in the first place. Law 41.5.7 is a negligent oversight on the part of law makers at the most recent re-write in 2017.

I'll hands down give you $1000 bucks if you walk up to Phil Hughes' dad and say that exact sentence to him. I'll also call the ambulance for you as well, as you certainly won't be in a state to turn on your phone. Again, what an armchair hero you are.
