James Pattinson resorts to bowling spin in utterly farcical final session of Vics v SA

By The Roar / Editor

The session also included EIGHTEEN overs of Pete Handscomb and Marcus Harris’ ‘bowling’.

That’s what I was referring to ….the greatest Grandfather / Grandson in Australian sport. I love how the Vic capt was trying to shift blame to SA capt when it was a Vic ground.

I gather Head was not against the idea but was not keen on chasing so many runs. I read somewhere he wanted to chase around 350 which was a more reasonable number IMO. Anything over that and there's probably only 2 outcomes; a win to the Vics or a draw. As it stands, that pitch has beaten both sides.

Iirc, Victor told Ian Chappell early in his Test career; "If you ever get to captain Australia, don't do it like a Victorian."

Seriously? Because the Vics tactics don't deserve any encouragement. If they're so keen on an outright result then they shouldn't have used up 150 overs on their first innings.

Groundsman must have thought he was preparing a wicket for the last game of the season (the final) not the first! Handscomb botched this badly.

Vic Richardson would be laughing his head off. From the CRYPT-Zombie FM he'd be saying, "Fancy that, the Vix getting a dose of their own"

Paul, Yes would have been hard, but if the pitch is still very much a road (and I do not know if it has deteriated ) could have resulted in an interesting finish. As it turns out it has now now become an obsolete bore with fast bowlers bowling spinners and batsmen who have only ever bowled about 5 overs in their career doing the same.

There haven’t been first innings points for a few seasons. You get batting and bowling points in the first 100 overs of the first innings. If you choose to bat for 150 overs you’re betting you can roll the other mob fairly quickly - if you can’t it really isn’t up to them to give you an easy second chance

hi General, I gather from other articles Head was open to the idea but Handscomb's idea of a sporting declaration meant the Saffers would have to bat at about 5 an over for nearly 80 overs to win. That's seriously hard to do, especially when,at any time, Handscomb can put 9 guys on the fence.

Pie Thrower, From what I understand there is no first innings points any more, so what is the point of SA batting on when they could have been set a target to win.

Agreed. Junction Oval is Victoria's answer to North Sinney Oval. Teams keep scoring 900 there but the associations keep scheduling games at them. Does CA not do ground ratings?

Handscomb needs to pull his head in. He can’t complain about SA not declaring and gifting them first innings points when he let Victoria take two days to rack up 600 runs. Maybe declare earlier yourself? Maybe have a chat to your grounds man and ask him not to prepare a road???
