Umpiring howler so big he just hangs his head in shame

Joe Root easily survived after checking with DRS.

Spot on, Rob!! Was definitely not a howler. The Aussies were sure it was out too. So were they trying to cheat? Often we see this - where the bowling side appeals passionately, sure they've got a wicket. But if the umpire gives it out, and then replays say it wasn't, he's the one who gets lambasted for making a howler. Really? Why not accuse the bowling side of attempted cheating if it's that obvious? We have the technology because umpires were not always getting it right. Why do we now expect them to get it right more?? There are still the occasional howlers onfield, but it's the ones by the third ump that need fixing.

Not an easy job at 140km/hr Give the umpires control of drs and it'll restore their place in the game rather than attacking their judgement

To be honest if the players especial Hazelwood are appealing like that they also deserve to hang their heads. Slow mo is a great thing but unfortunately the umpires on the field don't get that luxury. It almost flicks Root's front pad before the bat. The umpire got the next one right and it was a tough decision live IMO. He's really is making fair calls if he thinks it could be out and leaving in the batting and bowling teams court to make use of the DRS. The consistence regrading wides has been ordinary and that's far less difficult IMO.

Umpires lose form and confidence exactly the same as players do. This guy needs time away from the game to get his head right.
