Ricciardo ends three-year drought with crazy Italian Grand Prix triumph

By Jawad Yaqub / Roar Guru

From the energetic orange laden grandstands of Zandvoort, Formula One arrives at the passionate red of the Tifosi at the legendary Monza circuit for what should be another exciting Italian Grand Prix. Tune in from 10:50pm (AEST) on The Roar for live blog updates.

Max Verstappen took back the lead of the championship with victory on home soil, but it is Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton who have had the pace advantage around this famous 5.7km power circuit.

The 53-lap GP will indeed be a test for Red Bull, who are also seeking to overturn a 12-point deficit in the constructor’s championship to Mercedes. But the Silver Arrows will see Valtteri Bottas start the race from the rear, thanks to penalties for exceeding his power-unit allocation for the season.

Monza saw the return of the Sprint format for qualifying, which saw Bottas claim pole position on track – however, the penalty sees Verstappen promoted to the head of the grid.

Hamilton bogged down on the start of the Sprint and immediately lost ground, having slipped down to fifth. He benefitted from Pierre Gasly’s first lap crash at Curva Grande, but couldn’t make further inroads.

McLaren on paper have been quicker than Red Bull here so far; and with the penalty to Bottas, Daniel Ricciardo gets his first front-row start since Mexico 2018. Lando Norris follows closely behind in third with Hamilton for company.

The Papaya cars are now being considered a threat for the win in the Grand Prix, given they’ve got two cars in contention against just a single Red Bull and Mercedes.

Thanks to the Sprint, all drivers will have a free choice of starting tyre for this race, with it likely that the medium tyre will see a run in the first stint and then a one-stop strategy for the hard compound.

2020 saw such a unique race with Pierre Gasly winning for Italian team AlphaTauri from Carlos Sainz and Lance Stroll. Could a similar varied outcome be achieved on this occasion?

Tune in from 10:50pm (AEST) on The Roar for live blog updates of the Italian Grand Prix as Formula One gets set to excite at the Temple of Speed.

Not unexpected. It took Dan the same amount of time before he was fast in the Renault. It's gonna be harder for Norris now. We can look forward to a few more Hamilton , Verstappen coming togethers this F1 season. To me they are all racing incidents, and neither of these two is about to give way. That's life at front end.

Hi Jawad! - How about that for a race!! Dominated that run to the first corner and then just looked supremely confident up front rest of the race. Not sure if Max and or Lewis could have go him if they hadn't crashed. But if ifs and buts were candy and nuts we'd all be eating our words. It has been such a long time since we have had a proper fight up the front and FINALLY we have one. Thanks for doing the livestreams (I'm getting too old to stay up!) and enjoy the rest of the season mate.

I couldn't believe it when I saw the headline. I was hoping after his qualifying that he might get on the podium but a 1st and 2nd for McLaren is brilliant. Congratulations Dan.

What a race that was! The points at the top of the championship stays the same at the end of today, but boy there'll be a lot of talking points out of the contact between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton. We can celebrate Daniel Ricciardo's first win since Monaco 2018 and McLaren's first since 2012 though, who even without the crash between the title protagonists could have still won this race. Other than that, that wraps up this live blog on The Roar so thank you again for joining me. I will be back in a fortnight's time now for the Russian Grand Prix. Until then, ciao!

RACE REPORT The drought dating back to the Brazilian Grand Prix in 2012 has been broken for McLaren, as Daniel Ricciardo lead from start to finish to win the Italian Grand Prix. In what was the Aussie’s first win since Monaco 2018, Ricciardo nailed the start and gotten ahead of pole sitter Max Verstappen going into Turn 1. His teammate Lando Norris had the job of keeping Lewis Hamilton at bay meanwhile. The leading quartet stayed together for the early phase of the race, before McLaren pulled the strategy trigger on Lap 23 and brought Ricciardo in for a change to the hard tyres. Verstappen was brought in immediately on the following lap, though a lengthy 11-second stop saw the Dutchman’s race unfold, before re-joining down in tenth. Hamilton who had passed Norris for the lead, came in on Lap 26 and also had a slow 4-second stop, but it was upon exiting the pits and going into Turn 1 that the Briton’s race unfolded also. Verstappen comes charging down the outside, with Hamilton moving to the left going into Turn 1 before Red Bull is launched on the inside kerb at Turn 2 – which saw both cars collect each other in the gravel. The Safety Car was deployed to clear the wrecked championship protagonists, while the rest of the field who hadn’t yet pitted were able to come in for their mandatory change of tyres. This benefitted Charles Leclerc and Valtteri Bottas, who had started from the back of the field. Upon the restart, Norris quickly dispatched Leclerc from second, while Bottas on the quicker medium compound began picking off the Ferraris – before bogging down behind Sergio Perez. The Finn threatened the leading McLarens initially, though was unable to pass the Red Bull ahead, who had to deal with a 5-second penalty for overtaking Leclerc off the track at Turn 4 after the restart. Ricciardo and Norris secured the first one-two finish for McLaren since Canada 2010, while Bottas inherited the podium to score vital points for Mercedes in the championship. Perez dropped to fifth, staying ahead of Carlos Sainz and Lance Stroll. AlphaTauri’s day on home soil was a disaster, with Yuki Tsunoda failing to start the race due to a brakes issue and then Pierre Gasly retiring early on, after a complete change of power-unit coming into the grand prix. Double points for Alpine lead by Fernando Alonso in eighth, while George Russell split the French manufacturer for more points.
