The North Queensland Cowboys will need to be near-perfect at home in the relaunched NRL season, and they get the chance to start that on the right foot when they host the Gold Coast Titans in Friday’s early game. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 6pm (AEDT).
With matchday travel on the cards for the foreseeable future, the Cowboys are the most disadvantaged side. Their shortest trip to Brisbane is still a two-hour flight.
That just means they absolutely must win their home games if they want to play finals footy in 2020.
To even think that far ahead though, the Cowboys will need to improve their attack, which was ordinary in a loss to Brisbane and win over the Bulldogs in the opening two rounds.
An injury to half Michael Morgan complicates matters for the returning Cowboys, and while they haven’t indicated so far they’re capable of beating good teams, getting the better of the Titans shouldn’t be a difficult task.
Of particular note will be the performance of Valentine Holmes as he continues his return to the sport following an ill-fated attempt at the NFL.
In a surprise to no one, the Gold Coast started their season with back-to-back losses to the Raiders and Eels. They have scored just 12 points in two games, letting in 70. It’s unacceptable at NRL level, but improvement looks like it’ll be a way off.
Injuries continue to haunt the club as well, with AJ Brimson and Ryan James among those watching from the sidelines, while Kallum Watkins has returned to England.
All that means Tyrone Roberts will play fullback and Jamal Fogarty gets a run in the halves over young gun Tanah Boyd, but in the grand scheme of things, unless their forwards can match it in the middle and Ashley Taylor plays a blinder, it’s unlikely to mean much, if anything, to the overall result.
For the Titans to succeed, they need to be patient and disciplined, prepared to play for 80 minutes and use their bench – featuring Jarrod Wallace and Shannon Boyd – effectively.
It’s where they could have an advantage when the two benches are compared, but given the likelihood of Jason Taumalolo, Coen Hess and Josh McGuire playing big minutes, again, they’ll have to be superb to not allow a platform for Holmes and Jake Granville to cause havoc.
Prediction
This should be one-way traffic. The Titans are likely to start slow off their long flight north and won’t recover.

Thanks Crispy . Truthfully I was just so pleased to be able to just watch a game of footy that I would not have complained too much even if we lost. Good luck for Sunday. The result is not cut and dried imo.

Good win by your boys jimmmy! Shame that it blew out as it was a thoroughly entertaining match - though I'm sure you're not complaining - good for the for/against stats! ;) Yep, Reece Robson was a standout - had an absolute cracker of a match.

Nice win Rob. Highlights for me were Robson, Robson, Robson and Holmes. Everyone just looked so much better when Robson was passing from DH. Clifford started kicking well, forward ran onto the ball better and he looked sharp running the ball. Not so good. We are still too programmed. The trys we scored were great but Melbourne, South's and the Rooosters will defend those easily. We still don't offload anywhere near enough. Parra killed the Broncs with the offloads but Green just doesn't like the risk. Anyway , onward and upward.

The teams that promote and move the football best will be the teams playing finals football this year. The Cowboys were a little 1 out and predictable for periods early in the game. Clifford at 7 kicking and Drinkwater creating and running at 6 really complement each other IMO. The more I see these boys playing together the more I like it. Morgan is a very good centre and you can't under sell a creative running edge attacking player of his ability? Masters might be a good wing returner trucking the ball back through the ruck. Val Holmes is delivering points at the back, something the Cowboys have been missing on the score board in recent years. Robson is a great plus for the Cowboys and Dunn impress the more he plays IMO. A win is a win and getting them in the bank early is very important.

Robson on was the key imo. Everyone looked better when he was passing to them.

The Cowboys looked a little clunky early on, but then the injection of Robson into dummy half and some excellent play from Drinkwater really sparked their game. And how about JT? 200m in the second half alone?! I hope this form can translate over to when they play top eight teams, because only then will it'll be convincing if they're going to be finals worthy. Great flow to the game too as with last night thanks to the rule change.

Titans morals for the spoon after this. Cowboys will be lucky to finish 7-8.

Cowboys looked pretty good but Titans have not been competitive so far this season. Halves were ok but not really tested defensively. The forwards looked very good, still question marks in the centers so maybe the Morgan to center might not be a radical one. Titans were competitive for the first 30 and then it was all over.

79' - TRY COWBOYS, KYLE FELDT The Cowboys back onto the attack after the penalty. Taumalolo and Marsters with good runs, then McGuire beats one and two, then flicks an offload, with Taumalolo picking that up and going to within ten metres of the line. Great passing here, through the hands and Feldt has scored in the corner. North Queensland Cowboys 34 Gold Coast Titans 6
