The North Queensland Cowboys will host the South Sydney Rabbitohs in Townsville as Round 18 hots up. Join The Roar from 7:35pm AEST for live scores and a blog of all of the action.

Both sides head into this game in decent form. North Queensland upset the Roosters last weekend, while Souths finally got back to winning ways by beating Manly.

It’s been a difficult start to the season for the Cowboys, who are in 12th place on the ladder. But they are starting to scrap together some results and move closer towards the top eight.

For the Bunnies, they started 2019 like a house on fire. Injuries and State of Origin absentees have certainly slowed their momentum over the past six weeks.

But a four-game losing streak was snapped against the Sea Eagles and currently they still set in second spot. They remain one of the teams to beat in the competition.

North Queensland have made only one change to the team which won last weekend with Javid Bowen shifting from wing to centre to replace Jordan Kahu, and Murray Taulagi comes onto the wing for his NRL debut.

Skipper Michael Morgan and Dan Russell both drop out of the squad.

The Rabbitohs are still without Sam Burgess but Ethan Lowe returns in the back row with Dean Britt moving to prop to fill the hole left by the suspended Liam Knight.

Mark Nicholls has been added to the bench and Bayley Sironen is out.

If the Cowboys are to make the eight this year, now is the time to strike against a Souths outfit missing two Burgess’.

Prediction
The Cowboys have been improving and look better with Jake Clifford running the show. But Souths are the better all-round squad and should get the business down. Souths to win by eight points.

I thought Cody Walker was out there somewhere? Papi you obviously believe Souths outs are better than Cowboys 2 Australian Internationals, 2 NZ Internationals a dual World all star rep and for the record a DM fullback who position only just got filled by a 1 NRL gamer 3 weeks ago. I was actual referring to experience in the playmaking and game management roles which cost the Cowboys. Matt Scott and Boltons experience is huge sitting on the bench and playing 20min between them I guess.

Did Cody Walker play last night Rob? I must have missed that. ;-) Look, full credit to the Cowboys last night. Except for that late bombed try they probably would have won. Souths are currently a long way the pace of the other leading sides but have a LOT of room for improvement and are missing 5 key players and in particular their FB, Alex Johnston and their forward leader and inspiration Sam Burgess. The other two Burgess brothers and Liam Knight are also significant losses to a side lacking size and strike in their forwards at present. Morgan is also clearly a big loss for the Cowboys but don't complain about Clifford's inexperience when Souths went through the same thing when they gave rookie and Souths junior Adam Reynolds an opportunity years ago. It part of the NRL "Circle of Life" Rob and the Cowboys are currently in a rebuilding phase with their spine. I could go and add up the combined experience (including rep games) of Matt Scott (309), Gavin Cooper (308), Scott Bolton (240), Josh McGuire (239), Jason Taumalolo (195), Jake Granville (129), Jordan McLean (120), Kyle Feldt (108) but what would be the point, right? ;-)

no show - "Souths are... still good enough to beat most teams" Insider - "Outside the 8" Really? Are you sure you aren't walking through Hardyards "room of mirrors"? In the last 9 weeks Manly have lost against every current top 8 side they have played and have ONLY beaten sides outside the top 8, including the 16th placed Titans TWICE! Manly has beaten the Bulldogs, Sharks, Titans, Cowboys, Dragons and Titans. They have lost to the Broncos (by 16 points!), Panthers and a vastly depleted Rabbitohs. Face it, Manly has had an EASY run and have false delusions of grandeur. In their run home they will have to play 6 teams in the top 8 (capitalised below) and just 2 teams outside the top 8. Manly's run home: EELS, STORM, KNIGHTS, Warriors, Tigers, RAIDERS, STORM, EELS. Let's see how much hot air you have left by the finals as Manly plummet out of the top 8 and you watch 8 rival teams playing in the finals. LOL

No WarHorse, the big difference between both games this year between Manly and Souths is that Adam Reynolds brought his kicking boots last week. Had Reynolds landed just 1 of his 2 missed conversions or 1 of his 2 missed field goal attempts in game 1 then Souths would have won in regular time. You can't blame the refs for Manly's ill-discipline or the Sea Eagles spoiling tactics to slow the play the ball down or in trying to milk penalties when in possession but had their tactics called out. Manly may have been missing "Tommy Terrific" but remember Souths were missing Alex Johnston, Sam Burgess, Tom Burgess and George Burgess. So the odds were stacked heavily in Manly's favour. You also forget that Manly won the penalty count in game 1. Did the refs help you win that game then? Swings and roundabouts WarHorse. You can't have it both ways.

"Scotty called my Cowboys ordinary. Bit cheeky coming from his Dragons affiliations" So clearly that was meant as a compliment as the Dragons have been less than ordinary. Damn! DPS, don't read the above!

Big guns like Sam Burgess, Tom Burgess, George Burgess, Alex Johnston and Liam Knight? I think the Roosters were only missing James Tedesco and Boyd Cordner.

Papi, it's always something you have to trump in on. Seeing as you asked the question about experience and youth being the difference, I'll reply with the key problem being Reynolds 28 (172 games), Cook 29 (80games) and Walker (80) SOO reps, up against Clifford 21 (16), Granville 30 (127), Asiata 26 (109) but (11) in the halves. Fullback Drinkwater 4th NRL game, Campbell Graham (37). Thats were the Rabbits trumped how Cowboys in the last 10min. In all honesty Green has got a lot of very old and struggling to keep up with some very young not ready yet player issues. He's skating on thin ice IMO because he has failed to get the balance right for 3 years. Lucky for him the bloke before him set up a good balanced line up. Green has now dump the blame on the players game management? Mr Green you have Molo, Hess playing limited minutes and Cooper still playing 80min. Where did the miss tackle come at the death. You're still picking Bowen. You don't pick Cotter instead of Bolton when Cook is Granville's opposite.

Hey Goose, Souths have 6 first graders including the (3 main muscle forwards Burgess boys) who are still out injured yet they still persevere tough it out & win... despite rubbish refereeing, out of control penalty decisions & we need not apologize .... doesn’t have to be pretty just has to warrant 2 points!

Ummm. I think you'll find the ref did that. 8-2 penalty count is what got souths home matey.

Cowboys were crap. Had nothing in attack apart from cross field kicks to feldt. Clifford absolute shocker lost them the game with all the missed goals and very poor kicking game and last tackle options. I was expecting their forwards to dominate but were very average. Bottom 4 for the cows IMO.

Con! Seriously! You are just encouraging him to continue trolling the Rabbitohs (well, actually I am the target not the Bunnies). Have you ever seen that movie "The Cable Guy"? And I DON'T have cable!

Don't give the QLDers tips mate! Let them muck it up for themselves. If they spent less time trying to pick the NSW side and focused more on their own selections... we'll they'd still get beat but by much less. ;-)

Souths have a few "young players" as well Rob... Cameron Murray, Adam Doueihi, Braidon Burns, Campbell Graham, Dean Britt, Tom Amone, Jaydn Su'A, Tevita Tatola... How many did the Cowboys have tonight?

Souths pulled a rabbit out of the hat I guess. Despite "Dopey's" false claims the referee was NOT our friend tonight. The Cowboys won the penalty count 2 to 1. Penalties conceded: Souths 6 Cowboys 3 Worse were some of the things that WEREN'T called, like a blatant knock-on by Drinkwater next to the Cowboys line and Josh McGuire raking the ball off Roberts etc. Shocking stuff!
