In a battle of two teams missing their biggest stars, the Penrith Panthers and Newcastle Knights will both look to pick up where they left off before the coronavirus shutdown. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 4:05pm (AEDT).

Penrith were riding high off back-to-back victories in the first two rounds over the Roosters and Dragons, but all that was brought crashing back to Earth by Nathan Cleary’s quarantine breach.

He will now miss a fortnight through suspension, and with Dylan Edwards also injured, it leaves Penrith with a hopelessly inexperienced spine.

While Apisai Koroisau will play at hooker, they are going to need one of the youngsters – Caleb Aekins, Matt Burton or Jarome Luai – to step up in a big way.

Even though their forward pack should be able to match it with Newcastle, it’s a real question as to where points might come from for the Panthers.

The Knights are also facing their own uphill battle. Having started the season with wins over the Warriors and Tigers – both impressive, but not against amazing opposition – they come into Round 3 minus Kalyn Ponga.

It means Tex Hoy gets his chance to shine, but their spine isn’t quite as inexperienced a Penrith’s, with Mitchell Pearce still there to guide things around.

In a game which is likely to be low-scoring due to a complete lack of reliable attacking options across the park, not only could Pearce break things open, but the Knights defence looks solid.

Exceptional would be the word to describe it in their complete shutout of the Warriors during the season opener, and while it’s impossible to predict how teams will return from a nine-week break, if they start how they finished with David Klemmer leading the way, then they might be hard for Penrith to stop.

What the Panthers will have at their disposal is excellent starts to sets though big wings Brian To’o and Josh Mansour. If they can make that count, be disciplined with the ball and dominate possession, then Jarome Luai’s running game could provide enough points.

That’s not to say Newcastle’s back five isn’t good, but it’s unreliable at best, so they will have to be prepared as a team to get gritty and likely defend plenty on their own goalline.

Prediction
In a flip the coin game that could come down to one or two plays, Pearce and Klemmer should get the Knights to fall over the line.

Knights by 6.

I was cheering for a draw as it would've been a travesty of justice if either team had won, It would be a fake win and make the table false. I don't know if Gallop did anything good but golden point came after a trip to the USA to watch the NFL. They scrapped golden point soon after but Gallop didn't get the message,

Yes Golden Point is rubbish as it is not fair to reward points when you don't win and get nothing for a draw. What it does show is minutes of desperate field goal kicking that is nearly as bad as the bomb. Yes odd numbers are good and give the table the look of realism given the game has three results win, lose or draw.

Great match. Knights defence was quality. Some good young players for both teams. It seems as the O’Brien has got the knights humming along nicely.

That was a good example of lack of killer instinct. The temptation is to say that that was the best comeback in the history of the Newcastle club. It was a miracle alright. But the miracle was that Penrith didn’t start to bayonet the wounded from the 30 minute mark. Penrith let the Knights in, the Knights didn’t force their way in. Major capitulation by Penrith. They should have to forfeit their point for the draw on principle.

would have been a travesty of the nature of the game had Penrith won..Adam Obrien has got this side with a stern mindset of heart and resilience..lord mayor ought to buy them all dinner.

Yay. So we could have saved the field goal practice and given each team 1 point after standard time. This now makes the table interesting with teams having an odd points tally.

Well, that was an incredible performance on the Knights. No Pearce. No Watson. 15 players for the final 70 minutes plus golden points, but they manage to snatch a competition point with a draw. What defence. What an error. Penrith have plenty to think about after that though. Penrith Panthers 14 Newcastle Knights 14

FULLTIME The Panthers away through To'o and Fisher-Harris. 20 seconds, 60 metres as he gets up to play it. They go left from Luai to Crichton and he drops it. Knights on the attack and they go crossfield, Best to Lee and he flicks an offload on the siren, Mann is wrapped up and that's that. A draw. Wow. Everyone is exhausted. I'm exhausted. What an absolutely cracking game of rugby league. Wow. Wow. Wow. Penrith Panthers 14 Newcastle Knights 14

90' - The Knights with a seven-tackle set, but they are absolutely out on their feet here as they try to get out of their own end. Good run from Best there, before they go over halfway through Hunt on the third. Mann now caught out of dummy half, before Saifiti takes 5 to 30 out. Final play, and Hoy fails to take a shot, then Best is wrapped up. Penrith have 40 seconds and 70 metres to go. Penrith Panthers 14 Newcastle Knights 14

All these field goal attempts are making it like an Aussie Rules game.

89' - The Panthers now with it out of their own end. Mansour a run, but then Crichton was flat-footed, still grabbing ten. Koroisau from dummy half as he passes halfway. Tamou the next. Last play, 35 out and Burton has to go here. He goes, and that's got the legs, but misses right. Penrith Panthers 14 Newcastle Knights 14

88' - The Knights away through Tuala and Hunt, then Lee as they come out of their own 30 on the fourth. A long way from home here as Saifiti charges. Hoy has to kick from inside his own half and Aekins will bring it back off his own line. Penrith Panthers 14 Newcastle Knights 14

87' - Mansour runs sideways and loses ground against great defence. A better run from To'o now, before Fisher-Harris comes up with a huge run towards halfway. Koroisau offloads now out of dummy half, then gets it back and is stopped 35 out. Final play, Burton is going to go the bomb down to the corner instead and that's perfect. Hoy trapped a metre in play. Penrith Panthers 14 Newcastle Knights 14

86' - Penrith to kick off in the second half of golden point. Down the ground to Mata'utia and Klemmer will bring it back for the Knights. Glasby has the second, then it's on for Saifiti who turns into the tackle and is stopped about 30 out from his own line. Short side they go and Mata'utia finds Jones, before the fifth sees Ese'ese up to halfway. Final play now and it's Hoy bombing down towards the corner. Aekins takes that and brings it back.
