The South Sydney Rabbitohs get a chance at a spot of revenge when they host the Penrith Panthers to kick off Round 23 of the NRL. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:50pm (AEST).

The Rabbitohs are building nicely towards September. Buoyed by the return of superstar fullback Latrell Mitchell, they have won six of their last seven with the finals looming.

The top four is not beyond the realm of possibility as they sit in fifth, but they have to keep winning to get there. The Panthers are just treading water, shut out at home last week against the Storm, and they will be hoping for a better performance as they await the return of their star halves combination.

The Panthers should welcome the return of Dylan Edwards for this one. He was named in the custodian role on Tuesday. It pushes Charlie Staines to the bench in the only change to their side from last week.

Campbell Graham returns at centre for the Rabbitohs, pushing Jaxson Paulo to the wing and Izaac Thompson to the reserves. Lachlan Ilias returns at halfback. Daniel Suluka-Fifita returns to the starting side, with Hame Sele back to the bench.

The recent history between these two sides has been well-documented. The Panthers won in emphatic fashion when the two teams met earlier this year, 26-12 with Penrith at full strength. The Panthers obviously won the premiership over the Rabbitohs in the grand final last year, just three weeks after losing to them in a qualifying final.

The Panthers have won eight of their last 10 games against the Rabbitohs and haven’t lost to them at Accor Stadium since 2017.

Prediction

This game has far more riding on it for South Sydney. The top four beckons, and they are riding a good wave of form at the moment.

They will be highly motivated to make a statement against the team that denied them a premiership last year. Latrell Mitchell has been in irresistible form of late, and you get the feeling that is set to continue as we get to the pointy end.

The Panthers weren’t bad last week, but they look very limited in attack. Already missing Nathan Cleary and Jarome Luai, the loss of both James Fisher-Harris and Dylan Edwards was telling.

They did a lot right, but couldn’t break down the Melbourne Storm wall. There will be more points on offer this week, and they get Edwards back for this one. They will want to have a focus on defence though, as they probably only have a few tries in them at best without their Origin halves.

It is hard not to tip South Sydney. They could actually do a number on Penrith if they are in the right mood. However, the Panthers are always stoic in defence and they will make the Rabbitohs earn their win.

Rabbitohs by 10.

I don't blame you for being salty. If the Rabbitohs record over the Eels was reversed I would be salty too. - 6 wins in a row for an aggregate score of Souths 210 vs Eels 68 - 8 wins from their last 9 games for an aggregate score of Souths 292 vs Eels 138 - premierships in the last last 8 years; Souths 1 vs Eels 0 - GF appearances in the last 8 years; Souths 2 vs Eels 0 I'd hate to be constantly reminded of that as well.

Probably next year? Down the table somewhat. Don’t know how the rest of the season will pan out. However, can’t be disappointed after a few years of effort. You can’t ask more than the team you support putting in an effort.

Well besides you I haven't seen anyone or any media blow up about the Campbell Graham try so that would suggest I am more likely in the right. I thought it was a pretty even contest. Both teams had players out, bombed tries and played below there best.

Look, it's all banter, Trell is getting better with the gab and not losing it, I can give him some slack as hes brilliant and whatever his negatives are he makes up for it in spades with his magic. The Bunnies will get better and will learn big time from this loss, so all you Panthers better watch out sooner or late for the pink Panther and turning into inspector Clouseau as that's on the cards  Go Bunnies

Every time the other team that plays against South’s Wins, they must have cheated?

I’m a Parramatta supporter. Though who can blame anyone for enjoying a South’s loss? As there’s you ‘not’ ranting on & that’s a bonus.

Penrith bombed 3 tries… Well, you still can’t be happy losing to a Cleary, Luai, Fisher-Harris less Panthers? I expected South’s to win & thought , not too bad if Penrith only lose by 10-14 beforehand. South’s should still tell Mitchell to shut up & not give other teams another reason to be primed for a game.

I agree with you, it was the wrong call. Commonsense call, maybe, but when did that become the norm? Remind, we also had a likely try to Mansour turned down in GF 2020 because Kikau brushed a defender on the way through. That one would also have made a slight difference. Not a fan of decoy runners, and the sooner they outlaw it the better.

Even worse comparison, Kikau comes in behind the line of the man passing the ball, his own fault coming up too fast. The decoy never runs past the man passing the ball, all Kikaus own doing. Bit of a stretch trying to compare the two which is why no one is talking about this try as being controversial. Open the other eye.

Yeah; I got that wrong as I meant the Campbell try. The lean runner rang into Kikau in the middle of the field and it impacted the slide. Right decision to award the try though and same with the Edwards try.

Hey Panthers, the Bunnies are missing a good and reliable goal kicker and youse were lucky that young Paulo had a bad game and lollypop fingers all game, as he should have scored 3 tries and we would have won this! Never mind that's footy and them the breaks, youse got away with another one. We will get you next time.

The fact that Penrith bombed 3 tries should worry you more about South’s defence, than anything else ? That means they also created far more chances through a Poor South’s defence & only didn’t score due to things that they did themselves. Next time , it could be far worse for South’s?
