Nah - happens all the time, particularly with old captains. When they get into their thirties, everyone knows they are really only a season to season prospect.
It does go both ways to a certain extent but you can easily get stuck with an average performer for 3 years on big money but I suspect the reverse happens a lot less. Players get upgrades to current contracts but how often do they get downgrades to existing contracts?
It goes both ways. The club gets a bargain if a player on a three year contract has a breakthrough season in their first year.
Did the Broncos pay any more to David Fifita this year because he played above expectations? Of course not.
Ironically , Benji Marshall would have been much better as Broncos 5/8 this season than Boyd but was 'let go'.
What to do with elderly players who appear to be in decline can be pretty complex but with all the evidence available it would be a brave choice to give Boyd another crack at 1st grade next season. I can't believe his team mates would have any confidence in his ability to lead the way after watching his form at times this year.
If players regularly get upgrades to contracts because they are playing well above the value of their contract then why can't they accept less? Why does the club and fans have to lose both times?

I’d also say no club is going to sign their captain to a short term contract. The captaincy issue has definitely complicated matters.
