'One of the worst I've seen': Raiders forward sent off for massive high shot on Storm halfback

By The Roar / Editor

Cooper Cronk believes the Raiders forward Corey Harawira-Naera will spend a long time on the sideline after his arm slammed into Jahrome Hughes’ head.

Might write an article soon on how they should go about it (spoiler, massive change in interpretation mid-season followed by backsliding is not going to be my recommendation)

I clearly recall Bill Bradstreet playing the ball in the 1968 grand final. He looked up and Ron Coote king hit him and he was knocked unconscious. He didn't go off but he was nullified. The referee penalised Coote but didn't send him off. The referee was Col Pearce a Souths fan. We have better referees these days.

I to refer to the old days too often. Billy Smith was a physical wreck after giving his body to St.George for years. I remember him getting hit high by John O'Neill and I remember him trying to get even by hitting John O'Neill high but he broke his arm on Lurch's head.

The game is changing cliches from "It's a tough man's game" to "Its a big man's game".

Time for another crackdown.

It looked to me like the Strom player was falling into the arm of the Raider. It can't be compared to dropping someone on their head.

Halfbacks SHOULD be hit like that when poncing about on the advantage line

Unfortunately lockdown has put paid to that - mind you it doesn't look as though he's had a cut for a year or more - wish I could grow a fraction of what he's got!

6 would seem to be more appropriate if they really want to stamp out this sort of careless and high impact contact

True Brendon even CHN accepted he’d got the contact wrong and was immediately remorseful about hurting Hughes. Sometimes these things unfortunately happen. Sent off, suspension all justified. On this one at least we can say it wasn’t intentionally malicious.

Well if he didn't have such a clean record he would have gone for 6 weeks and would have missed every game this season if the Raiders progressed into the finals. It is a bit of a reward for being a clean player for 7 years which was taken into account when handing down the final suspension. Makes sense to me.

No i was referring to the Soliola tackle in 2017 which was a stiff arm and was high and late. As for CHN, I get the whole downgrade system, but I don’t know how you get to play in three weeks after that shot.. oh wait yes I do, that means he can play finals football if they make it… well that worked out. But you know, player welfare..

I hear you, snd hopefully neither of those players are repeat offenders. Their previous record will affect their suspensions. I just get sick of that phrase being trotted out whenever a players does something obviously wrong, like it’s a panacea.

The point being there are some players - more so in the past - that deliberately go out to hurt people - I don't think CHN or Soliola for that matter are in that category - lets keep it in perspective - don't think anyone is querying the suspension that was handed out

Let's not exaggerate - it wasn't a stiff arm - CHN collects Hughes with the top of his chest and shoulder and collects him in the head - its now a no go area. The 6 match penalty downgraded to 3 due to his clean record looks appropriate.

The good bloke defence is irrelevant.

It certainly dropped after the contact

You conflate two separate issues. Raiders intendeding o pummel Melbourne into submission. Legitimate Raiders throwing around Papenhausen. Legitimate Hodgeson and his high shots . Illegitimate, sin bin CHN high shot . Illegitimate, send off and long suspension. Don't mix them all up , it's not touch footy.

Well one could argue about the legality of some hits. Though Rapana showed last night he might be better off sticking to body checks because his arms didn't seem to want to work in defence.
