Current World Cup holders the All Blacks tackle bitter rivals the Springboks in their first match in Japan. Join The Roar from 7:45pm (AEST) for live scores and a live blog of this big clash.

Christmas has come early. These two old foes have already played once this year for a thrilling 16-16 draw in Wellington.

The Springboks went on to win the Rugby Championship and claim some silverware. Now they get it on again.

This should be some entertaining match-up so early in the tournament. I’d tip these two to meet again in the final.

The All Blacks are gunning for their third World Cup crown in a row. No country has ever won three World Cups on the bounce.

South Africa, winners in 1995 and 2007, have their own designs on the William Webb Ellis trophy.

The Boks come into the tournament in great form. They beat Japan 41-7 in their last match and are undefeated in their past five games.

They have knocked off Argentina twice and Australia in 2019. Coach Rassie Erasmus is doing an excellent job.

Handre Pollard and Faf de Klerk will lead them around the park. Willie Le Roux has been named at fullback, while Jesse Kriel has missed out on a starting spot in the centres.

South Africa will field a monster pack with Duane Vermeulen, Pieter-Steph du Toit and Eben Etzebeth.

The All Blacks have gone with Beauden Barrett at fullback and Richie Mo’unga at number 10. Sonny Bill Williams has been picked on the bench.

Brodie Retallick has been left out with a shoulder injury, so Scott Barrett starts with Sam Whitelock in the second-row.

Prediction
Little separates these two great rivals. South Africa have been improving, while there are some doubts about the All Blacks after their poor Rugby Championship. Of course, you write off the Kiwis at your own peril.

New Zealand to win by three points.

I don,t agree. He is playing the game off the pitch... And this serves nobody

"Corne, I thought the Boks played well" Yeah, me too... I hope this loss doesn't cause a loss of faith in SB, there was a lot to relish in their performance.

To be fair there have been gaping holes in refereeing in all matches I have watched so far. I wonder if there has been some sort of directive to allow the game to flow? Will even out as tornement goes on.

Official penalty count 4-9. Heard Rassie quote 2-10, and 2-11!. Thought he would quote official figures?

He tackled him over the shoulder anyway, we were told the refs would be strict on this at the rwc. Otherwise what was the point of all the silliness with calls during super rugby?

He also went over the shoulder. Technically a penalty try

This match provide enough evidence that Garces should not be anywhere close to a whistle in the final or that matter in the semis....give him a flag .....even that might be a stretch.

No see my later reply above. Just feel it’s out of place in major tournaments or Olympics.

Oh sorry, wrong post. I don’t mean the haka is a yawn, I’m actually a bit of a fan. By all means have them in bilateral internationals, but just doesn’t feel right to me in a World Cup. A bit like like the Olympics, best to have everything on an absolutely even keel.

Take emotion out of the game and you have a 10 point win to the ABs. You're the one trying to revise the result.

Why can’t the SBs get gee’d up? Seems you shouldn’t need a do a Haka to do that. You seem pretty gee’d up about it.

Unfortunately you’re right, but every team has them. Just ignore him and move on.

That’s the benefit of using your phone to post, you only need one hand to type.

I think laying down in a line out would definitely not be an advantage. The opposition wouldn’t even need to jump.

The issue is where and why it happened. It was cynical and done to prevent a try which certainly would have been scored. It’s the same concept as knocking down a pass, in general play it’s typically a penalty, if it’s to prevent a try due to an overlap, it’s a YC. A few years back BB a YC for a similar incident.

“We never got any calls literally.” Absolutely, except for, you know, all the calls you did get your way. How you didn’t go down to 14 men no one knows. Blaming the ref is very poor, and will distract from the real issues. It makes you look a poor sport and lacking in game knowledge. And yes, I’m aware AB fans do it too, I generally dislike it when they do it also. The only time it is acceptable is when I do it :silly: The main problem is how to score points. The SBs didn’t seem to have many ideas other than kicking between the posts. Yes they got a try, but that is more down to AB defensive lapse rather than a truely constructed try.

Chivas, I think the loosies were hampered by the game plan, every time one off runners with nobody on their shoulders to offload, that means their runs become predictable, simply because the defence knows what is coming.
