The Hurricanes travel to Suva to play Fijian Drua in the first of four Super Rugby Pacific games on Saturday. Join The Roar for live updates from 12.05pm AEST.

The Hurricanes have been forced to rush back Justin Sangster in the second-row after losing three of their locks.

Dom Bird (illness), James Blackwell (concussion) and Caleb Delany (concussion) were each ruled out for the Hurricanes’ tough trip to Suva.

It’s a banana skin match for Jason Holland’s side, with the Hurricanes making just three changes to the side that beat the Brumbies at home.

Their powerful back-row trio Devan Flankers, Du’Plessis Kirifi and Ardie Savea will play crucial roles against a growing Drua side under Mick Byrne.

Byrne has made just two changes to his side, with Joseva Tamani coming in for Te Ahiwaru Cirikidaveta in the second-row.

The other change is in the backline with Taniela Rakuro starting on the left-wing ahead of Eroni Sau.

Oh, I didn’t realise your meaning, Chivas. Wasn’t trying to be pedantic (I don’t need to try :silly: ). If we could bottle whatever enthusiasm is in the water in Suva we could sell it outside Oz stadiums.

Was excited to see the match up between Proctor and Masi. The Drua 13 didn't disappoint against a seasoned campaigner. Drua had momentum going but silly errors and decision making snuffed out some promising attacks. Drua sailing into top 8. They have a good run home and will host 2 more games, against Moana and Reds ⛵️

Depends where you think the back of the ruck was. I dont think it was where he was standing. If it was the backline and wverone else woyld yave been in line with him... they weren't. They were behind the last man in the ruck. I watched it several times and its pretty obvious and reaonable what the ref is reading. But you can disagree, it doesn't change it. The only reason i mention it, is because its an area that many don't seem to understand and us a common ruling... so instead of an understanding public we get fans complaining about the ref because they are not rulling the way us sideline fans who are not wellversedin the rules think they should rule in a situation directly in front of them. What surprises me is how many fans think they know the rules better tgan the ref and based on their k owledg or lack theeof begin running a commentary on the ref. Note that is not a commentary on you ot this particular thread, but rather a general comment

No, but it can make counter rucking a situation you can easily get pinged in, which you see frequently. I am not advocating rucking, but it was simpler when it existed, because anyone in the way got out of the way fast because they got rucked out of the way.... i personally don't think a few scratches ever hurt anybody.. but stomping and mountain climbing neededto be outlawed and unfortunately genuine rucking went with it. But back to it if you drive legitimately straight through stepping over the player and ball, that is fair. It is still a ruck and the ball pops out your side and the half back claims it, as long as it hasn't been assisted by hands. I love a good counter ruck.a couple of the big boys walking over top of the opposition and blowing them off their own ball. This wasn't that situation as the ball came out on the Drua side of the ruck. If the 5 had been seen to go straight through it woukd have been fine I think. I would need a ref fo tell me for sure as this has caught me out too many times... but he has players in front of him he couldn't go through so tge ref deemed him to not coming from behind the hind most foot. If the 12 had got to the halfback first this would have put the 5 on side as this would be the play from which onside and offside is calculated. At least that is my read. The problem is for players is to know where they are at any point in proceedings. The point being if you get pinged in a game, learn what you are being pinged for so you can adjust. It doesn't mean you won't misread a situation in future, but less likely. The problem is when a forward sees a 9 within arms reach in front of him,, its like a cat seeing a bird. I probably should have asked and sorted it out to know the exact ruling, but I am retired now  Also just because the ref is telli g players the state of the ruck maul, he is rarely telling you the player whete you are in relation and you are just focussed on getting to the pill.. it is an area which needs more transparency and I don't have an answer for that.. it makes it confusing from a fans perspective and a players. They should put together a rugby rules session or series of sessions, to explain everything to the public and players and play it once a year alomg with examples... instead they leave everything a mystery and leave fans and players in a constant state of confusion. I mean look at the commentators, they seem to tbi k the rules are whatever seems right in their head and they then add to the confusion.

Ouch! That hurt. They are a different beast in front of their fans. Wow. They have found a kicker as well.

Need to consider the humidity and understand that the ball handling has been as good as good players can manage in the conditions. The old cliche that the ball was like a bar of soap really isn't far from the reality.

Yeah mate, your Canes are a strong side. Maybe short a lock in the pack. I’m not looking forward to my reds playing in Fiji in a few weeks. Even though we have four Fijians in the team.

Thats the idea right ball and all tackle. You need to be big and strong to do it and those Fijian boys are nothing if not that, so a hard day at the office. The thing is the polynesian sides can go off the boil and be weak at the set piece. They rarely go off the boil in front of their home crowd and families and they are holding their own in the set piece. Nobody is finding the Drua a side that is easy at home. I think the Canes are still in this. I've been well impresssed with Roigard this season and as I've mentioned elsewhere would lo see a couple of AB trial games to see players like him in a pressure setting against the top players collectively.

As i just replied to you elsewhere, wont this make counter rucking impossible? It appears counter intuitive. PS I appreciate hearing your opinion.

Doesnt this make counter rucking legally impossible? Plus both Drua were off their feet.

I’ve never drunk Chivas… its just a name, but I have frequented whisky bars. Yes the ball can be in front of you and you be offside. He was considered part of the ruck. If the ref deems the ruck exists, then when the ball comes avalailable you need to come from the hind most foot of the ruck. He broke out of the middle of the ruck which at the time is considered offside. I have never been sure when I could step straight through because the ruck has disintegrated and team mates when asking them have not been clear on it either. So I don’t know. I just know I have been pinged for it more than once.

Absolutely, but I notice the drua target the ball in the tackle in those conditions. They get their shoulders and arms into the ball and test the carry strength.

Am not sure i understand, the ball can be in front of you but you’re off-side? Plus to me he looked to go straight thru the ruck i didnt see any “going around.” I did think the ref was poor, it went both ways but mainly to the Drua. That said, as a Canes fan the big picture is a worry. Wgtn have the Shield/NPC double. I had high hopes, but win or lose, I’ve thought the ‘Canes have repeatedly finished poorly this yr. PS Chivas? Laphroaig! (By appointment to C-3rd)

I saw Proctor cough the ball up after being smashed twice... i have seen Smoking Joe Stanley do the same when Paddy Darbo hit him in two big hits back in the day. Neither of these players woukd you consider a risk in normal conract situations.. its not just a greasy ball.. its really tough and we don't give enough credit to that.

And the hits are still coming hard and you still have to be accurate in defence or you get bumped.. Physical games against physical teams are harder than they look on tv.

They are funny. I waa playing Manu Samoa back in the day and the Samoan crowd is laughing everytime they smashed one of us or one of our team bounced off one of their players like they had run into a movimg truck.. the sideline was full of families singing and laughing... big hearted people. The polynesian nations contribute so much to rugby, its vital they have their own team for their fans to get behind. They add to the entertainment package, whether it be their players or their fans.

He picked it up from an offside position. The ball came out and at that point is where your posiruin is taken from. He cam from the middle of the ruck, not straight through. He stepped out and around. Had he stayed where he was the 12 would have had it covered. It is a penalty and always has been. As I responded to withthedawn below, it is not an easy one for the player to read and they can't in my mind start second guessing it, but anone who has played in the forwards I can almost guarantee they have been caught out on this. The problem was the ruck hadn't fully disintegrated and he waan't comsidered to be the back of the ruck and he didn't come straight through. Understandable that he felt the ruck had disintegrated and he waa coming straight through... the ref didn't.
