The first game of Round 4 sees the Hurricanes welcome the Waratahs to Wellington. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 5:05pm (AEDT).

Both teams are coming off tough one-score losses to the Blues and Rebels respectively from last week. After the first three rounds, the Hurricanes are sitting in joint 3rd with the Blues on 10 points. On the flip side, the Waratahs are 7th with 7 points, but have managed to get a bonus point in all their three games.

The home side has only made three changes from the team that took on the Blues last week; Ardie Savea returns to captain the Hurricanes after his one-game suspension due to the throat-slitting gesture from the Rebels game in Round 2.

After a strong start to the season off the bench, Asafo Aumua replaces Dane Coles in the starting line-up, while 23-year-old Kini Naholo makes his Hurricanes debut on the left wing.

The Waratahs have major upheaval in the starting 15, with coach Darren Coleman making six changes, including Mahe Vailanu taking over hooking duties from Dave Porecki. The Waratahs second row is completely new, as Wallaby Ned Hanigan partners Taleni Seu, replacing Hugh Sinclair and Jed Holloway. Charlie Gamble takes the number 6 jersey.

The back line has a slight re-jigging with veteran winger Nemani Nadolo taking over the left wing. This, in turn, has led to Tane Edmed moving to the bench as the Tahs experiment with Ben Donaldson at 10. The 18-year-old sensation Max Jorgensen will get his first start at fullback, having scored three tries in the competition so far.

With southerly winds and potential for rain throughout the day, conditions could be more challenging than some of the other rounds in the competition so far.

That’s why I asked if it was that instance. At 78mins? Break down the left. Pass to Marky Mark. Tackled. Ruck extends into the in goal. Ardie moves into the in goal, and wrestles with the Tahs 13, while Marky Mark is still holding and presenting the ball. It’s not Ardie preventing the halfback from getting it. His feet are in the in goal, therefore onside. Where the penalty try? The only thing you could say is his hand goes on the ruck before his feet are planted in the in goal but as he doesn’t engage you’d be hard pressed to say he was impacting anything at that point. Hardly preventing a try. Unless it’s a different ruck? Which is why I asked. Look at 78mins objectively. And the last thing either of us should do is listen to Kiwi commentators

I'm not a Tahs fan and I appreciate you are 700% a Kiwi fan and will always stand up for Kiwi sides, but that was not within the laws. It was within the field of play and a side entry. The Tahs player was short of the try line. Fine if you disagree, I agree with the Kiwi commentators.

Yea, read my other post explaining why the AR watched Ardie and knew that what he did was within the Laws. The NZ commentators were wrong. Also, the momentum and grounding was well and truely done by that point. Ardie didn’t prevent a probable try. I know that you know you’re stretching a bit on that one.

Yea, they were wrong, it was in the in goal, so the offside line is the goal line, not the hindmost foot. So he was onside and can’t be done for the side entry. He never got near the ball either, it was the side entry, ‘and never getting back inside’ they were talking about. A lot of the complaining about the refs, even from the commentators, is sometimes down to not understanding the laws or applying the wrong ones for the situation. I know you’re a pretty smart guy, who is clearly passionate about our sport, so don’t begrudge the passion and enthusiasm at all. There were certainly some calls I disagreed with both ways, but I don’t think this is one of them.

It's reasonably simple: keep rolling the same direction off rucks to pull defence across field; sack Jack Gordon & get a younger attacking 1/2 (Gordon takes to many wrong options); get some real hard locks that aren't #6 converted to locks; drag any 1/2 that box kicks outside the 22 (i.e. Jake Gordon); counter attack (when between 22m & 50m) & increase the speed the game is played.

Yes blatant side entry and killing ball. NZ commentators all said it was.

Is it 90secs or 60secs? I thought it was 60secs to be fair. If he did have 3 secs to spare. What’s the problem? The consistency needs to be there and I’ll take your word on the times. The kick in front should have gone through though. He got rushed, panicked, and did the dropper thinking it’s a gimme. That’s on the kicker to own that. The refs do need to consistent with shot clocks though.

I didn’t say he was over the time but it seemed long and even the commentators on replay noted it . Waraths seemed to be getting hurried Hurricanes Try scored 27.58 and kick taken 29.25 He had a whole 3 seconds to spare Was warned had 20 sec Waratah try 73.33 and kick taken at 74 min after being warned. He had a minute to spare – why hurry him up ? Not really consistent but expected

I think this is reffering the the side entry the commentators had a go at Ardie for when the ruck was over the Canes line? If it is, he was allowed to do what he did. The commentators were wrong.

I would rather the ref was as vocal as he needs to be to keep the game flowing. Do you know how long that ‘eternity’ was yet from your first complaint?
