Match preview

After a week off, The Rugby Championship resumes with Bledisloe Cup Game 1 on Saturday night at the beautiful Optus Stadium in Perth as the Wallabies and All Blacks square off. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 7:45pm (AEST).

This is a must-win game for the Wallabies in terms of both The Rugby Championship and the Bledisloe Cup. This being a World Cup year, there are only two Bledisloe tests – the Wallabies must win both games if they are to wrestle the cup back from the All Blacks for the first time since 2002.

The Wallabies currently sit in third place on the Rugby Championship ladder after their opening defeat away to South Africa and their win in Brisbane 2 weeks ago against the Pumas.

The All Blacks are in second after defeating the Pumas and drawing with the Springboks in what was a thrilling contest. The only thing separating the All Blacks from the Springboks is the bonus point South Africa earned in their dominant 35-17 win over the Wallabies.

There are several changes to the Wallabies side that defeated Argentina 2 weeks ago. James O’Connor comes into the starting 15 at outside centre in place of Tevita Kuridrani who drops out of the 23-man squad altogether.

Nic White returns at scrum-half, pushing retiring veteran Will Genia to the bench. Sekope Kepu makes way for Allan Alaalatoa up front while Tolu Latu has replaced Folau Faingaa at hooker.

The All Blacks have also made changes from their last outing against the Springboks. Anton Lienert-Brown comes in at 12 for Sonny Bill Williams. Aaron Smith returns at 9 for the exciting TJ Perenara who moves onto the bench.

Big changes to the back row with Matt Todd and Shannon Frizell both dropped in favour of Sam Cane and Ardie Savea respectively. Todd jags a spot on the bench while big Frizell drops out of the side altogether.

Scott Barrett makes his return from injury in the second row, coming in for Brodie Retallick, while Dane Coles gets a start at hooker ahead of Codie Taylor who also moves to the bench.

Prediction
Even with my Green and Gold glasses on it’s difficult to see a Wallabies victory in this one.

This is an All Blacks side absolutely oozing with class. I love TJ Perenara on the bench. He’ll come on late in the second half and wreak havoc on the Wallabies.

The New Zealand side is littered with players who dominated this year’s Super Rugby competition. I can’t see this match being any different.

great refereeing and holly molly the wallabies didn't leak penalties...was that an aberration or a long term policy...i mean not giving your opposition 10 or so free kicks per match

I'm never too far away Nobes. I read more than I comment. Looks like our respective teams have a bit of soul searching to do before the big dance gets under way.

Lomu like indeed. The AB"s, and all teams, have found Kerevi hard to contain. He has a great talent, if not the complete player yet. Don't care if he is playing grade three rugby in Outer Mongolia, he always gets brought back for all WB games over the rest of his competitive career.

Epic win, but I am interested to see several cautious posts re where the WB's are really at. Too early yet to even consider any complacency. The result will certainly send shock waves around the rugby world....could even say a tsumani...well, a little one anyway !

C'mon, Bing, whoever you are. Don't recall have seen you comment before ?? That is a low blow. T'man, Riccardo, Paulo, Bluesfan, Highlander and several other NZ Roarers are great contributors, with a vast knowledge of the game, are very asute, and clearly love the game and will give full credit to any good team or individual performance. Just go away and think about what you have posted !

Wasn’t close. Came completely anonymous, Savea showing his frustration. Read the only impact and I genuinely think (having watched a second time and trying to take out my bias) he didn’t once control his own body weight at the breakdown - and should have been penalised off the park.

The Wallabies were excellent last night but next Sat would be a real good measure of their progress. They need to keep hitting the ABs harder & kip ball in hand.. as 4 Thor we don't need that & so do Genia 4 that fanciful over the top anyways but the scoreline is something I'd cherish 4 years 2 come.. pliz guys, feets firmly on the ground n kip hitting harder.. Wallabies 4 ever..

Playing like the Wales, scott Johnson has had good influence. The question is if we keep playing like this where does pocock fit in. Latu struggles to start for Waratahs enough said he’s a test player.

Thought Banks looked ordinary in defence when he came on.

I'm guessing Cheika voted for Phipps and Foley and got out-voted by Johnson and O'Connor!!

Yeah that is not a lot of possession, however they had two opportunities to score off mistakes in the first half and took both. Still think they are ahead of the pack, their counter attacking ability will keep them in most games.

A win has relieved the pressure on a poor administration. Australia will not be a rugby powerhouse until the sport's administration represents the rugby community across Australia. It is ironic that this weekend has been the most successful weekend in Australian rugby in the past couple of years but that the local rugby community still lack support from RA. A lot of talking but zero action!
