The (short version) of the Rassie Erasmus video that everyone is talking about

By The Roar / Editor

Former South African head coach and the country’s current director of rugby Rassie Erasmus has released a stunning 62-minute video criticising World Rugby and the refereeing after his side’s loss to the British & Irish Lions in the opening Test.

We’ve cut up the crux of Erasmus’ arguments in his opening address but if you want to watch the full video you can do so HERE.

World Rugby has issued a holding statement saying it “notes the comments made by Rassie Erasmus” and will be raising them with SA Rugby.

Ironic given SA won a World Cup on the back of questionnable scrum interpretations ..

Geez. I couldn’t even sit through the short version. That’s some incoherent rambling there!

Losing to the Lions in your own country obviously hurts, bad. This is the perfect distraction from the team performance and coaching. Classic blame it all on the refs. Embarrassing and must not go unpunished. Complaints should not be filed via social media.

Did he learn his craft in the School of Anger and Rants run by partners McEnroe and Kyrgios?

He’ll be in trouble but I don’t think refs should be untouchable either. This may create some middle ground. Berry got plenty wrong which Rassie quite rightly highlighted. Refs will never improve if they don’t have to justify their incorrect decisions. If Rassie is accurate on Berry’s discussion with him then no wonder he was upset because the monologue of what Berry said was very poor.

It's absolutely unacceptable I'm sorry. You can't come out and record a 62-minute diatribe video wearing your national uniform and disgracefully moan about how your side has had a bad run from the referees. It sends horrible message that it's ok to slag refs. It's not. He's a disgrace and he needs to be suspended for the rest of 2021. Anything less is a pathetic attempt by World Rugby, who I have as much faith in as the next person.

Yeah I agree but let's be honest here, coaches have had no joy going through the correct channels. If SA had been told certain things would be watched closely and then the ref doesn't police these areas and then he isn't accountable then what is the point? This is the tip of the iceberg I would imagine for Rassie and the frustration of refs not being accountable has boiled over. This might actually be something positive going forward I hope.

I think this is the key point, Brett and makes it even worse. He’s thrown a ref under the bus, potentially career-wrecking, for marginal tactical advantage. So what was his motivation? We can put aside ‘good of the game’ BS, or nonsense that he couldn’t get feedback from Berry (if there’s an incidence of a ref sitting down with the ‘water boy’ to be grilled about his performance a couple of days after a test it’s passed me by). It’s: 1. Draw attention away from Bok players and coach. 2. Exert huge pressure on the officials for next week (‘nice career you’ve got there - shame if anything happened to it’). 3. A controversial one; subtly invite others to speculate that as the ref was ‘laughing’ at Kolisi and treating him with huge ‘disrespect’ relative to AWJ that there might have been a ‘racial’ motive. It’s far more egregious than just ‘losing the plot.’

Bodger I agree refeering needs to be scrutinised but not using the soapbox platform he did in his capacity as a Director of the SA Rugby Union wearing his SA uniform. He's an utter disgrace to the sport. There are much better ways to go about it. For me, Rassie appears to be somewhat unhinged at the moment, I'm worried for the guy's mental health more than anything. In what world did he think this was ok..

Hi Brett, referring hasn’t been that great and certainly not consistent lately. I think if we want to see improvement referring should be open to more analysis, we analyse so much of the game in an open format; players, coaches etc etc. If we want referring to improve then why is this a bad thing? Why shouldn’t refs come under more proper analysis and this be presented to fans and the rugby public? Berry was inconsistent with his referring and I have a big thing about refs disrespecting captains. O’Keeffe is very prone to this as we saw in the Wallabies game with Hooper and Berry did it in this test match but only to one captain. The captain should be able to talk to the ref as adults but so many refs don’t show the respect that the captains give them. I will be supporting the Lions again so this isn’t a angry Safa rant. ????

I'm not sure I could put together an hour of video in 5 or 6 days, Jacko, so don't think the timeframe is a major concern... :stoked:

He makes Mourinho look like fair sport. Another sad part is that the main focus during and after the Test on Saturday will be on the refs, not the rugby. Even those of us who really dislikes all kind of ref bashing and like to focus on the rugby gets sucked up into this. And I hate that.

Loved it, should be more analysis of refs bias and lack of consistency during games. Boks problem up next is O’Keeffe and is there a more incompetent international ref?

Brett my biggest concern is that it took so much effort to make and put together and it took a week ( almost ) for it to be released. A post match angry rant I could understand but gees even the angriest of fans has calmed down after 5 or 6 days.....
