Match result:

A double-hatrick shootout between Roy O’Donovan and Jamie Maclaren has ended in a one-goal victory to the Brisbane Roar.

The match was going to the script for the first 55 minutes, before it all went a bit weird thereafter.

Melbourne City opened the scoring on the soxth minute through a tried and tested method of sliding Jamie Maclaren through beyond the backline.

Maclaren doubled his tally 20 minutes later when he flicked on a superb cross from Josh Brillante.

That was about it for the first half as City were content to allow Brisbane to try and break them down. City’s confidence in their own defence proved valid as the score remained 2-0 at the break.

A pair of changes and a change in formation for Brisbane at half time set about turning the match around.

Roy O’Donovan scored for Brisbane and the comeback was on. Jamie Maclaren completed his hat-trick and the comeback was off.

Aaron Amadi-Holloway scored his first goal of the season when he got on the end of a Jai Ingham cross. The comeback was back on again.

Amadi-Holloway then earned a penalty for Brisbane when he was fouled by Rostyn Griffiths. O’Donovan took and converted the penalty to level the scores.

VAR got involved when Denis Genreau decided he didn’t fancy a concussion and used his hand to block a Mauk shot from hitting his face from point blank range.

A penalty was consequently awarded and O’Donovan converted it to complete his own hat-trick.

With Maclaren having come off when City were ahead, their main avenue to goal had gone. The last 10 minutes saw them through everything forward, but it wasn’t to be.

Final score
Brisbane Roar 4
Melbourne City 3

Match preview:

The Brisbane Roar take Melbourne City a bit further to the north, with Dolphin Stadium in Redcliffe the host venue for this clash. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 4pm (AEDT).

Brisbane took on Adelaide last week where neither side looked like scoring for the first 80’. In the 84’ though a James Troisi pass found Riley McGree to give Adelaide the lead, and the eventual win, leaving Brisbane down in ninth on the table.

For table leaders City, they dominated a Central Coast team high on confidence to convert an early lead into a 3-1 victory. Curtis Good scored from a corner in the first half, before Adrian Luna and Rostyn Griffiths made it 3-0. Jordan Murray scored a late consolation to sully City’s clean sheet.

If Brisbane are to have a hope of at least scoring, then something needs to change up front. Roy O’Donovan has their only goal so far in four matches, that coming as a late equaliser against Perth in Round 1.

Brisbane will be without first-choice left-back Connor O’Toole on Olyroos duty. George Mells and Aaron Reardon are promoted into the squad, while Jordan Courtney-Perkins returns to the team from the U17 World Cup.

City are without Tom Glover, Connor Metcalfe and Ramy Najjarine all with The Olyroos.

The big inclusion for City is star striker Jamie Maclaren. Just two weeks after being ruled out for four weeks with a hamstring injury, Maclaren has been declared fit to play. How many minutes he sees out remains to be seen.

Idrus Abdulahi comes straight into the squad after the U17 World Cup. Joe Gauci, Raphael Borges Rodrigues and Kerrin Stokes get promoted to the squad in place of the Olyroo absentees.

Prediction
Brisbane have looked bereft of ideas up front, but City have been particularly vulnerable to the goal against the run of play. City are the much better side and should get the result, especially with the return of Maclaren.

First home game I've missed in five years - jet lag from travel os - but that's it. That's what we want. It's what we need. Friends, who bag me all the time about soccer and Roar, went and hey - we have some new fans. It was fun they said. The passion, they just loved it. They just didn't know. They just wouldn't believe me. Come on Brisbane, come on A League. Boutique stadiums is what we want. It's what we need. Then watch us grow. And yeah, Brisbane Roar, play like that second half again, and never, ever, do that first half rubbish, ever again. ever.

City are away again next week, they head to Western Sydney. While Brisbane can run their form into a clash with Wellington.

Yes, once. Sergio van Dijk and Marcos Flores bagged 3 each in 2011 when Adelaide beat NQ Fury 8-1. But never 1 hat trick on each side.
