The Brisbane Roar clash with the Newcastle Jets to draw the curtains on a truncated week of A-League action. Join The Roar for live scores of the match from 6:10pm (AEDT).

They’ve only played seven games so far, but already it’s been a season of two halves for the Jets. They started poorly – really poorly – with all of their first four fixtures finishing in one-goal defeats.

Since then, though, they’ve turned a corner, going undefeated in their last three matches and winning two of them. With Craig Deans finally confirmed as the club’s head coach on a permanent basis, there’s a sense that Newcastle are on the right path again – maybe not for the finals, but at least for a steady, respectable season.

Brisbane, on the other hand, have been on fire. Or at least, they had been before running into a Macarthur outfit which ended their run of four straight wins with a 2-0 upset victory at Redcliffe mid-week.

The Roar hadn’t tasted defeat since their season opener, so how Warren Moon’s men respond to some rare adversity will be particularly interesting. The should bounce back with a victory, and the bookies have them as handy favourites for this evening’s clash, but Tuesday’s loss will serve as a handy reminder that they can’t afford to be complacent against a side they’re well on top of on the ladder.

JB, great analysis, I was at the game with a few friends and I couldn’t understand the Brisbane formation with DWH playing a lone strikers hand against arguably two of the leagues biggest defenders in Topor-Stanley and Bougard and having balls played into him in the air. The Roar never really looked like scoring from open play and I just wonder why the change.

Has the Roar bubble burst? This was a game best forgotten by both managements, there being so many errors made all across the field that scoring appeared to be the last thing on the minds of some players. Tactically the Roar are in "naive" land . They appear to be using a back three and two wing backs, a modern innovation that ,because of new (for football) levels of fitness, the two wide men are expected to do the job formerly done by wingers while at the same time getting back to help out in defence when required. This is where the confusion appears to be most prevalent, the two men being used in these positions neither have the pace ,or apparently "know how", to be successful in the tasks the positions require and so we get this almost endless passing backwards of the ball instead of being part of an attack function. This type of "possession for possessions sake" is like a brake on a car ,everything stops. Now let us assume that Hingert and Brown can change their ways and go forward at every opportunity, the resultant crosses that are part of a wingers arsenal are almost useless in this Roar team, where not one of the front men have the necessary physique to worry usually tall central defenders. Therefore the young goal getter DWH is left to chase the unusually high number of lobbed balls that are being sent into the "box" when in fact he shows a natural talent for upsetting these usually large men when he attacks them on the ground. There is much work needing to be done in this team and time is rolling on. jb
