It’s last versus second to last open Round 20, as Central Coast Mariners return home to Central Coast Stadium to face Brisbane Roar. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 7:50pm (AEDT).

Central Coast held Sydney to a 1-1 draw last weekend. Impressive displays from keeper Ben Kennedy and new import defender Sam Graham, going a long way to sure up their defensive woes.

The high of Brisbane’s first win under Darren Davies came to an end with a 4-0 loss away to the relentless, ladder leading Glory.

Issues all over the park in both defence and attack that need to be addressed if they are to get anything out of this one.

CCM lost both Tommy Oar and Tom Hiariej to injury. Oar’s knee ruling him out for the rest of the season, while Hiariej’s groin should only be a few weeks.

Second choice goalkeeper Adam Pearce has been omitted, in favour of youth team keeper Joe Gauci. And Kye Rowles returns from suspension.

Brisbane have some key ins, with Jamie Young and Alex Lopez returning from their respective suspensions. And Thomas Kristensen returning from Injury.

Joe Caletti, Macklin Freke and Jay Barnett have come out of the squad.

Prediction
This is very hard to predict. It’s almost impossible to say which Central Coast and Brisbane teams will turn up. Will Brisbane be hapless – like against Perth. Or will they spirited – like against Sydney? Will Central Coast hold structure, or revert back to being leaky?

Let’s be optimistic. Spirited Brisbane, and a structured Central Coast.

Central Coast 1 – 1 Brisbane

Just before the match, Adam Peacock tipped a 5-5 draw result. Smiled! Looking back, Adam meant both teams had had poor defense for the season.

Mariners played like Roar so far as their discipline went. Worse probably. Best Roar can do is play for a bit of pride, and contracts next year. Tongyak could build himself a future at Roar if he works hard. I hope we keep Eric, Lope and Mikelsen next year, even though they haven't impressed consistently, they've got the goods.

Thanks for the call Jacob. Started slow but then went off like a fire cracker. Speaking of fire crackers, it appeared only a matter of time before Simon picked up a second yellow. Kind of inevitable.

Match Review: The question I posed at the start of the night “Will Brisbane be hapless or spirited? Will Central Coast hold structure, or revert back to being leaky?” The answer; Brisbane were spirited, CCM were leaky. Eric Bautheac set the tone for the night – first with a breathtaking bicycle kick on the back of a clever run in to space, then with a dangerous ball in to the area that spilled out to Alex Lopez who volleyed home their second. CCM Poached one back within two minutes through Connor Pain who flicked on a cross from Matt Millar. Pain could have had 2 more in quick succession if not for some supreme keeping from Jamie Young. Tobias Mikkelsen restored Brisbane’s two goal lead after leaping past both Jonathan Aspro and Sam Graham, to head home a Bautheac cross. On the stroke of half time, Aiden O’Neill placed a long shot by Young to make it 3-2. Alex Lopez scored his second for the night with a relatively tame long effort that Kennedy saw all too late. Aiden O’Neill would pick up a second yellow after swearing at the ref to earn a sending off, and put CCM down to 10 men. Wenzel-Halls would score late on to put the result beyond all doubt after a lucky deflection bounced to him to put him through on goal. CCM would grab a consolation goal through Jordan Murray with a well placed header. Matt Simon would be the second Mariner to be sent off after picking up a second yellow for a late challenge. The score at full time Central Coast 3, Brisbane Roar 5. The win for Brisbane gives them a bit of breathing room from the last placed Mariners.
