Melbourne City host Sydney FC at ANZ Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores from 5:00pm (AEST).
It’s first versus third in a clash between two of the league’s strongest sides.
After being crowned premiers while idle earlier this week, Steve Coria’s side will have no doubt been allowed a few beverages by the young manager. But by now it would definitely be back to business for the Sky Blues. Corica has now won two major titles in his first two seasons at the helm at Sydney and it’s unlikely he will want to stop there.
Sydney will want to exorcise their demons from the 2017-18 season when, after securing the Premiers Plate, they went out in the grand final qualifier. This afternoon they will look to take another step towards a fifth championship.
Melbourne City are still yet to win a trophy in their time in the A-League and this season may be one of the chances they’ve had to rectify the situation. A win against the premiers would be a statement to the rest of the league, but more importantly, to themselves.
City are coming off a seriously extended break as they’re yet to play since the A-League’s restart, while Sydney have had two hitouts.
There will be no excuse for City to lack energy, but the downside to such a long break is that they will be rusty. They will need to shake the cobwebs off pretty quickly as a win here could kick-start their run-in to the finals. They are in a real battle with Wellington for the remaining top-two spot.
If you’re not a Foxtel or Kayo subscriber, don’t forget this match can be seen on ABC.
Prediction
Steve Corica would have shown his ruthless streak and hunger for winning more trophies at training this week, while City’s extended break will count against them. Sydney to win 2-0.

Sydney have been playing too long on cruise control, I'm not sure they will suddenly be able to switch it on once the finals commence.
