The Newcastle Jets and Adelaide United play in an important early-season game to open up a slight gap between the top six and the bottom four. Join The Roar from Hunter Stadium for live scores and commentary from 7:30pm (AEST).

Newcastle has certainly had an inconsistent start to their season, but a comeback last week against main rivals Central Coast may put them on the right track.

Roy O’Donovan is back to lead the line, while Dimitri Petratos, Jair, Rodrigo Vargas and Jason Hoffman are all ranked in the top 20 for shots on goal for the year.

The lack of potency in attack may just require a little bit of luck to turn the Jets back into an attacking machine.

Adelaide United haven’t enjoyed their last few trips to Hunter Stadium, not winning since 2015 at the venue against the Jets.

After a strong start, the Reds have just one point in their last three matches, with particularly disappointing displays against Melbourne City, and the first half against the Wanderers, highlighting the unpredictability of this team.

Despite only nine matches being played in the 2018/19 A-League seasons, both teams will see this as a defining contest that can set them up for the rest of the season.

With a combination of Adelaide’s shaky defence and the sheer amount of shots the Jets are taking, the home team has every right to be confident.

The Jets’ strike rate in terms of goals-to-shots is the worst in the league, meaning it’s only a matter of time before things change.

Adelaide’s best chance comes from playing a counter-attacking style, targeting the right side when moving the ball forward.

Prediction
It’ll be an intriguing match, if not only because both teams have produced unpredictable football so far this season.

The home team seems to have greater confidence heading into the match, and they could easily put a number of goals in the back of the net.

Adelaide may see their poor form extend this match.

Newcastle 2- 0 Adelaide.

Newcastle Jets 1-2 Adelaide United It was a heist in Newcastle as Adelaide United took all three points thanks to a penalty in the final minutes. Craig Goodwin put a poor showing behind him to be the hero for the Reds, who will be thrilled with their performance given the hot conditions and their recent record at the venue. Ernie Merrick will be furious at his team's defending, given the Jets' dominance throughout the match. Looking by far the better team, Newcastle conceded two goals that were a result of poor defending, leaving both Glen Moss and Lewis Italiano with little chance to prevent the result. Ryan Kitto was excellent in the half-hour he played, providing some great attacking plays and ultimately, earning the winning penalty. Newcastle's 2017/18 performance is increasingly looking like an aberration, as the team continues to struggle in attack despite possessing great talent. It opens up a gap between the top six and bottom four and, despite it being early in the season, it's an ominous sign for those lower-rated teams. Adelaide United heads into the New Year thrilled with the upset win in New South Wales, while the Jets will continue to ponder what has gone wrong.

FULL TIME- Newcastle 1-2 Adelaide United Goodwin's 90th minute penalty has allowed the Jets to take all three points in a match that can be considered a steal. The final 10 minutes certainly provided great excitement following a pretty anticlimactic contest. Thanks to everyone who joined me this evening, hopefully the Mariners can provide something in the final match of 2018 against Perth tomorrow.

88' - Newcastle 1-1 Adelaide United Chaos in the final minutes. Newcastle had a flying header saved brilliantly by Izzo right on the goal-line, a whistle is then blown but it's for off-side, and not VAR.
