The Newcastle Jets host Adelaide United at Hunter Stadium in Round 11 of the A-League. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage starting from 5:35pm AEDT.
Both sides will be full of confidence coming into this game after they picked up big wins in last week’s round of fixtures.
There is something strangely satisfying about winning a game ugly and that’s what Ernie Merrick must have felt following Newcastle’s win last week.
The Jets couldn’t muster a shot on target until the 87th minute and were on course to lose the game until two goals in quick succession turned the game on its head with Newcastle stealing three points at the death. It shows how far they have come this season when they can win games in that manner.
The concerns which arose when Vargas sustained his injury earlier on in the season have evaporated such has been the impressive form of Dimi Petratos.
He has arguably been the Jets’ stand out player and seems to create chances for his teammates every time he gets the ball at the moment, they will look to him to dictate things once again for the Jets.
Newcastle received the news this week that Roy O’Donovan will likely miss three months of the season after tearing his groin in the win over Perth and while it is a big blow to lose someone of his quality Newcastle have shown they can cope with losing their big players.
Adelaide’s early season struggles look to be behind them as they picked up a huge win over long-time rivals Melbourne Victory last week.
The Reds are starting to get some consistency back into their game and it’s no surprise that coincides with some of their more experienced players returning from injury.
They welcome back Taylor Regan into the squad this week against his former club with the big defender missing nine weeks with an injury.
The only disappointing factor to come out of last week’s game was the dismissal of two key players which could have a big impact on the game.
Adlung and Garrucio will both miss out after being sent off late against Victory and Adlung, in particular, could be a big miss as the German midfielder has been impressive since joining the Reds.
The first meeting between both sides this season ended with Newcastle winning 2-1 but the story of the opening 35 minutes was total domination by Adelaide and the Reds going a goal up.
It was up there with some of the best football they have played this season especially as they were missing 5-6 first team regulars so Newcastle will know they have a game on their hands this evening.
Prediction
I feel there is a good vibe around Adelaide at the moment and they are on an upward curve. There won’t be much between the teams but I think the Reds will sneak this one with Isaias playing a big part in proceedings.

This is correct, outside of that only the really obvious should be overturned.

I have to say Kanga that it looked like a handball to me in real time. (I was sitting down that way). The camera angles are different to the refs POV and he didn't hesitate. If the number of camera angles is determined by how many the TV crew have pointed at the time then I'd say the system needs a few dedicated VAR cameras at each end to supplement the TV cameras used. If you have a system that relys on footage then as a baseline you need to guarantee a certain number of cameras and angles at each ground to make it equitable for each game and the league. If you end up with too few, and ultimately the human is making a decision with poor footage, well that isn't really much better than the single POV (the ref) or at least three (including the sideline refs) all who don't have the benefit of a zoom lense. I still think ultimately a system with numerous, dedicated cameras with a trained AI attached is where this is heading towards to remove the subjective interpretation of the human element.

I agree. The problem with VAR is that most decisions, apart from offsides and the ball crossing the line, aren't black and white. They are open to interpretation.

The pen looked a little harsh but he called it as he saw it. Fox offered only one camera angle at the time and it was inconclusive. Another camera angle latter was more sympathetic to AU. Not sure if this camera angle was available to VAR. You’d have to side with the on field ref in this case.

Full-Time Report Newcastle Jets 2 Adelaide United 1 Newcastle come away with another win this evening and the win pushes them to 2nd on the ladder 5 points behind Sydney. The win came via a controversial penalty decision awarded late in the game but it won’t matter to Jets fans as their impressive season marches on. The game itself wasn’t the best game that was played all season and that probably came down to the tough conditions the players had to endure warm weather impacting the intensity of the game. The first half was littered with mistakes by both teams with the ball being turned over quite regularly. Both teams couldn’t settle into any rhythm and the keepers had an easy nights work in the opening 45 minutes. The second half was a lot more entertaining and it exploded into life on 55 minutes. Brown did very well to evade a number of challenges in midfield to start an attack for the Jets. The ball was moved into Petratos who was looking to get his shot off but was tackled by Lia. It was great work by Lia to get back in position but unfortunately for him the ball ricocheted into the path of Andrew Nabbout who made no mistake and curled the ball past Izzo. It looked like Newcastle were in the ascendency and were starting to move the ball with confidence. Adelaide, however, had other plans and especially Michael Marrone. The full-back was exceptional all evening ng and his marauding run down the right paid off, he was played into the box, and cut the ball back to Blackwood made no mistake firing the ball into the net. It looked like the game was heading for a draw from here as both teams were canceling each other out but the game swung back in Newcastle’s favor when they were awarded a soft penalty in the last 5 minutes. Petratos got a shot off in the box that pinballed around and hit an Adelaide defender on the upper arm. For me, it was very harsh as the defender kept his arm by his side and there was not a lot he could do. Petratos made no mistake from the spot and Newcastle hung on to claim another valuable 3 points. It was harsh on Adelaide who probably deserved a point but in football, you sometimes don’t get what you deserve. Thank you for joining me tonight on The Roar

Well VAR said otherwise... If it was wrong then what's the point of having it?
