Midweek A-League continues on Wednesday evening as the Newcastle Jets look to turn around their stuttering form line against the struggling Brisbane Roar. Join The Roar for live scores from 7:50pm (AEDT).
This is a crucial game for both clubs. As it stands, both teams are out of the top six, and a win could push them towards a position where they end up with less pressure on through January.
A loss though and all of a sudden things might getting a bit tough as we approach the mid-way point of the 2018-19 season.
The Jets have been far from poor, but just struggling to put anything with consistency together. The last six weeks have followed a frustrating win-loss-win-loss pattern, with that continuing last week on a 2-1 loss to the Adelaide United.
After making last year’s grand final, they have just struggled to get going in the new season, but there is still plenty of time to turn it around.
On the other side of the coin, the Brisbane Roar must find victories, and soon. John Aloisi has left the club, allowing them take a fresh direction under a new manager, but they have won just one of their ten games so far and rather than being inconsistent, are genuinely struggling.
That win came six weeks ago, and they have now let 14 goals through in the last five games. Their defence simply hasn’t been up to scratch, and if that continues tonight, the Jets could have a field day.
Prediction
It’s a tough game to tip given the respective positions and form of the two sides. However, Brisbane are seriously battling at the moment, so the Jets should manage to get a scrappy win out of this one.

Roar look so much better when our youngsters play. Brady, Wenzell-Halls, D'Agostino, Ingham, Caletti, Reardon and a few others deserve game time now this season is all but gone. Otherwise, like the gen that preceded them, they'll all end up elsewhere within a year or two. I also thought Jets were lucky tonight, given that they dominated for much of the match, their two goals both came from very sloppy play from Roar defenders. It's not a turnaround for Roar, but certainly it's time to build next gen Roar.

HT. Brissy have no functioning midfield to speak of whereas Newy just dominating with wave after wave of attack. Possession is 51% Newy to 49% Roar but that doesn’t tell the story. Newy with 16 shots on goal to 3 for Roar. And 7 on target for Newy with 0 for Roar. Young has been in the right place at the right time to save further embarrassment for the side from Brisbane. But heck who knows, a bit of luck and things could turn around!
