Perth Glory vs Manchester United

2019 Manchester United tour, July 13

Venue: Optus Stadium, Perth
Match time: Fulltime
Perth Glory Manchester United
0 SCORE 2

Manchester United will set foot on Australian shores for the first time since 2013 as they get set to take on the Perth Glory at Optus Stadium. Join The Roar for live scoes and coverage from 9pm (AEST).

The Red Devils have high hopes for the upcoming EPL season, and this tour, startng in Perth to play the Glory and Leeds United next week, before they head to Asia for some matches against big-name European squads, can get them going on the right foot.

However, the build-up to the new season for Manchester United has been far from settled. There is still a mountain of speculation regarding the future of French star Paul Pogba at the club, while manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær is preparing for his first full season in charge after taking over in the middle of the 2018-19 season.

Last season was ultimately an unsuccessful one for the Red Devils, as they fell to finish sixth, only just falling into European continental competition for the next season.

Their serious approach to this tour demonstrates they have plenty to get out of it though, with most of their top players making the trip to Australia.

It makes an exciting prospect for Australian football fans, who will get to see some of the biggest names in the Red Devils squad, including Pogba, Romelu Lukaku, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Ashley Young and Nemanja Matic, just to name a few.

The Glory will have plenty to play for in this match as well, even if it looks like they are right up against it to get anything out of it.

Perth did have an unbelievably good A-League season last time out and are aiming to do the same this time, but will also have Asian Champions League commitments to deal with, so this is a good chance to play a different brand of football.

It’s unclear if they will be at full strength, with reports suggesting Diego Castro is still out of the country and others are battling injury, but they will still make a good account of themselves.

Prediction
The Red Devils will win, with the only real question surrounding the final score.

Manchester United 3 – Perth Glory 0.

You do realise Stevo, Man U in the second half made 11 subs. (a virtual Man U first choice starting XI for the second half).

So, the preparation is totally different. ManUtd play competition in 4 weeks, Their preparation will be completely different level to Perth who begin competition in 3 months. I can agree with this. We go through this rubbish every 12 months when teams visit. If the foreigners don’t win, the reaction is “they’re not trying, they’re in preseason and they’re here on holiday”. If the local team doesn’t win, the reaction from the same people is “what a big gulf in quality there is between A-League and foreign players”, who are paid 20x the Salary. This was not part of my comment. I expect people outside football to have such boringly predictable reactions. Disappointed when it comes from people who I thought understand the game. This flows from the previous para so doesn't apply :)

The big difference is that one group of players have 10 week off-season, the other group of players have 20 week off-season. So, the preparation is totally different. I was very impressed with Fornaroli, he was matching it with the opposition when it came to ball control. Unfortunately you don't do wayward passes against EPL teams, they make you pay very quickly. I wasn't impressed with these so called football fans in their epl jerseys, support your local sport people it's embarrassing.

Before blowing a head gasket Nem you should have done some basic homework. MU commenced pre-season on 1 July https://www.manutd.com/en/news/detail/man-utd-players-return-for-pre-season-training A-league teams similarly. So our EPL giants and HAL midgets got back into the swing of it at around the same time.

"Even in early pre-season for both sides". You're kidding? ManUtd kick off in the biggest, richest domestic league in 4 weeks. Perth Glory kick off in the ALeaugue in 3 months. If this match hadn't been organised, Perth would have just come back to training. Melbourne Victory just started pre-season training 5 days ago.

How long have Perth Glory been back training following their Grand Final defeat? I reckon it has not been long. I should know this but don't they have about another month or more before their FFA Cup match against WS Wanderers?

To state the obvious, a gulf in talent on the pitch. Even in early pre-season for both sides, the MU lads just seemed bigger, quicker, more adept with the ball. Popovic’s preferred style of being as tight as and not conceding was on show but this was in contrast to Victory playing Juventus a few years ago - a more entertaining game. Popovic is a talented coach but sometimes I wonder.

Perth will be back on the training paddock after this. They don't have another competitive match until the FFA Cup gets going when they take on the Western Sydney Wanderers in what should be a really good hit out to find out where both teams are at, with straight knockout on the line, obviously.

Well, Manchester United have plenty to build on from this. They take on Leeds United in Perth on Wednesday night at 9pm (AEST). That'll be an intriguing battle as they get set for another season in The Championship.

FULLTIME The final whistle goes. That's the end here in Perth as a shot disappears over the bar from Mata as the final play of the game. A really strong performance from United, although they will be a little concerned by the way they struggled to score in the first half. Perth have given a really good account of themselves though. Spent most of the night in defence, and didn't conceed during the first half, which has to be positive. Perth Glory 0 Manchester United 2
