Sydney FC take on Shanghai SIPG at the Shanghai Stadium in Matchday 4 Asian Champions League action. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 9:30pm (AEST).

With 2 draws and a loss to the start their Asian Champions League campaign, Sydney FC need all three points in China tonight.

They are a realistic chance to do so, against an opponent that held them to a three-all draw in Sydney, when the visitors scored in the dying moments to steal a point.

Sydney looked the better side for much of the contest yet each time they were able to establish a lead, Shanghai pulled them back and Elkeson continued that pattern with the late equaliser in the 89th minute.

Sydney has travelled well and will offer no excuses on the road, however, the Chinese Super League champions will prove a tough ask.

Shanghai sits in third place on the ladder in their domestic competition with four wins from their first six matches. They are a powerhouse in Asian football and come into the game with a host of high-quality foreigners that will threaten the Sydney back four throughout the match.

Sydney FC have wrapped up second spot on the ladder and will be looking eagerly towards the A-League semi-finals in a few weeks time, after enjoying the luxury of a week off in the first round.

Sydney’s marquee men will once again be at the crux of any success they should happen to have in China tonight.

Milos Ninkovic, Siem de Jong and Adam le Fondre are fundamental to a successful raid to Shanghai; if achieved, it could move Sydney into an automatic qualification position with two matches still to play.

Prediction
As much as Australian teams do need a few wins in Asian Champions League competition to reignite interest and belief in the quality of A-League teams, it will not be happening tonight.

Shanghai are a deep squad with talent to burn and will be disappointed with the defensive lapses that allowed Sydney to earn a point at home.

On Chinese soil, this will be a different story and the home side should cruise to a comfortable victory.

It was interesting to see how well Sydney can play without Ninkovic, not that they'd want to do that too often.

We should always remember these matches when people death knell Australian football. Both sides took the attack to their more fancied opponents tonight. On balance, the A-League teams were probably the better on the night. Great games to watch.

Sydney FC have taken another point in Asian Champions league play in a 2-2 draw with Chinese powerhouse Shanghai East Asia. It was another cracking game involving two clubs that played out a thrilling 3-3 draw in Sydney a fortnight ago. This match was very similar to the last, as both sides took an aggressive approach; in search of three points to firm up their chances of qualification to the knockout stage. Sydney started well before the home side founds its rhythm soon after and the presence of Hulk and Oscar looked likely to cause problems for the Sky Blues' defence throughout the match. However, Sydney regrouped well after some early dangers and settled on the ball in midfield to have the best of the play in the first half. They capped it off with a goal to Brandon O'Neill in the 34th minute after a precise pass from Anthony Caceres and the home crowd was silenced in an instant. The advantage was held to the break before Shanghai came out after the break with real purpose. Within three minutes they had levelled, as a Hulk corner found Elkeson on the near post and Sydney's plans to defend their way to three points required serious reconsideration. After 59 minutes, Oscar found Wang with a delightful ball to the far post and the home side appeared to have taken the initiative and led 2-1. Sydney looked crushed; on the road and in danger of allowing the floodgates to open. To their credit, they didn't let that happen, as Adam le Fondre glanced a header home from a Siem De Jong cross after 62 minutes. All of a sudden the scores were level and would remain that way for the remainder of the match despite some hairy moments for both sides over the final 20 minutes. It was an excellent performance from Sydney and another gripping encounter with Shanghai. No doubt the Sky Blues wanted the win, yet they will also know that their chances of qualifying for the knockout out phase of the Asian Champions League are still alive and will rest on their final two matches; with a minimum of four points required to have any chance of advancing. Final Score Shanghai East Asia………2 Sydney FC………………...2

Another great game. If only someone bothered to advertise the champions league. Sydney played some excellent football...just one Brazilian short of a win.
