After having their winning streak come crashing to a halt last week, Wellington Phoenix will be looking for a quick bounce back when they take on the struggling Newcastle Jets. Join The Roar for live scores from 5:15pm (AEDT).
The Phoenix let one slip against the Roar in their 1-0 Round 15 defeat, having dominated possession for the majority of the match and had the lion’s share of scoring chances.
Prior to that, though, the ‘Nix had gone unbeaten for nine games and 76 days of A-League action, and in the familiar surrounds of Wellington this week, they’re ideally placed to restart their push for a top-two berth.
The Jets’ form coming in couldn’t be more different. They’ve lost three straight games and haven’t tasted victory in the A-League since November, along the way terminating Ernie Merrick’s coaching tenure after nearly three years at the helm.
There were encouraging signs in interim coach Craig Deans’ first match in charge, a gritty 2-1 loss to ladder-leaders Sydney FC, but a comfortable 2-0 defeat last week to a Melbourne City outfit that never needed to get out of second gear exposed the glaring class gap between the Jets and the A-League’s best.
Facing a trip across the Tasman to take on another premiership candidate in the Phoenix, things aren’t getting any easier for them, either.
Prediction
The Jets will cause some problems for teams in the run to finals, but it’s difficult to see them doing that here.

Geez, I cheer for the Nix but that was a lucky call. Looked an inch or two offside, but I guess it needs to be a clear error to overturn.

Hoffman missed a sitter on the 31st min. Absolute sitter. Absolute howler, worst miss of the season by a country mile. Can’t even find the target from 6 yards on his own. Why is he still in the A-league?
