Melbourne Storm stripped of premierships

By The Roar / Editor

BREAKING:The NRL has stripped the Melbourne Storm of two premierships, as well as any competition points this season, and fined a total of $1.6 million after being found guilty of long-term salary cap breaches. It is the heaviest punishment for a salary cap breach in NRL history.

NRL chief executive David Gallop announced they would also not be allowed to accrue any premiership points in the 2010 season.

“The elaborate lengths that they went to hide the payments was quite extraordinary,” Gallop said. “These payments have allowed them to recruit and retain some of the best players in the game. there’s no alternative as far as punishment.”

The club is believed to have paid $1.7 million to its players outside the cap in the past five years.

The Storm has been stripped of its premierships in 2007 and 2009, three minor premierships and their eight competition points this season.

While Melbourne lost their titles from the 2007 and 2009 seasons Gallop said neither losing grand finalists Manly or Parramatta would assume those titles.

The Storm were also stripped of three minor premierships.

“The club has furthermore been fined $500,000 and will be forced to return $1.1 million in prizemoney with the prizemoney being distributed evenly among the other 15 clubs,” said Gallop.

Haha, the players took salary cuts to stay together. I envision a similar sort of thing occuring at the Storm. Though we did lose players, just not the best ones. Anyway, it means that the Dogs should have no problem luring Tolman away from the Storm, and Hannat can move to Queensland.

I actually think your club is much worse Dogs. The only names Storm signed were Finch and Newton both unwanted at the time. The rest of their team were their own kids they developed pretty much and they lost Dallas Johnson and Folau. Bulldogs used that "extra" cap room to steal Bobcat and Ogre..... you should have been forced to give Andrew Ryan back to us with his salary counting towards your cap :P

Give me a break. My club had the same thing happen. I know exactly how you feel. I had attended every game that season. Give it two weeks for the facts to come out and for this event to find it's place in your mind. As for me, I blamed the administrators, who are the ones who cheated the fans and lead to a full cleanout of the club, which made it heaps stronger. It also provided the club with it's finest hour, the last game of the season the fans rushed the field and carried the players off. One of the best days of sport I have ever been to. It showed the players that we as fans believed in them, and didn't blame them for what happened. Still didn't stop plenty of them leaving anyhow.

Are you for real? The joys that is now amount into nothing and waste of my money and time. I wish some rugby league fans on here would pull their head out of their ass and look at the big picture here. It wasn't your money and time thats down the toilet now. Stop acting like your here to save me and rugby league pretending to be a psychology. My decision is final and theres nothing you can do about it.

Just watched AFL footy show (first time ever) and they said 3 ex St Kilda head honchos were at the centre of The Storm rorts. St Kilda were doing pretty well prior to these blokes heading to The Storm and the AFL might take a look. They will find nothing of course. The AFL doesn't look that hard. Perhaps rorting is an accepted part of the AFL, but not Rugby League and Waldron has just found that out for himself. Well done NRL for exposing these Melbourne grubs.

Dave, The Storm's development has suffered a huge blow, but rugby league in Victoria is far from being dead and buried. David Gallop's swift ruling on the matter might convert a few Victorians over to rugby league: it was a brave, unprecedented move that no other sports boss would have done. They may not support the Storm, but they might go on to watch the sport on Fox Sports and/or support one of the other 15 NRL clubs.

The Storm's success has been tainted by their refusal to play by the rules, but it hasn't robbed you of the joy it provided you between 2005 and 2010. Do you know how many long-suffering fans from underperforming clubs would like to experience that sort of joy? A long-standing fan will support their team through thick and thin. You've supported your team while they reigned supreme. Now you're bailing out on them because they've been ousted from their position. That makes you a fairweather fan.

You got that right NRL Queensland. The Rebels have had the best start thanks to the Melbourne Storms.

Your obviously more of a "bandwagon" fan by the sounds of it. Though with no salary cap in Union, you won't have to worry too much about this sort of thing happening.

Im a Storms fan and I really feel let down by the club. Im going to support the Rebels next and every year. Take them away from Melbourne and put them in Central Coast. I wasted five years of my life following them and now this.

Add $3.3M to the losses reported - $1.7M salary cap breaches and $1.6M in fines. News Limited fire sale?
