Waldron resigns from Rebels

By The Roar / Editor

BREAKING:Brian Waldron, the man at the centre of the Melbourne Storm salary cap saga, has reportedly resigned as chief executive of the new Melbourne Rebels Super Rugby franchise.

Former Storm chief executive Waldron offered his resignation to the club on Friday, ABC TV has reported.

Chairman of Melbourne Rebels Super Rugby franchise, Harold Mitchell, told SEN radio at 9am today that an emergency board meeting was called at Rebels headquarters this morning, where Waldron tendered his resignation and the Board had it accepted..

“It’s a sad day for sport in many ways, but we have to act in the interests of the Rebels and that’s what we’ve done.”

“And we announce that acting CEO will be Pat Wilson, an administrator with us, who has a long history of administration at the ARU and is well known to the players.

Mitchell expressed concerns for his former CEO in the wake of the Melbourne Storm’s salary cap scandal.

“I was certainly worried about individuals – they’ve got families and people around them and great pressures on them,” Mitchell told SEN radio.

“He was pretty shaken, no surprises there.

“If you stand back from a little bit of it; if you’re in public life the public own you, and it’s all over it. So I was just concerned for him as a person.

“As well as him, there’s probably one or two others there might be concern for the moment.”

Waldron quit his post at the Storm last year to take charge of the Rebels, due to enter the new Super 15 rugby union competition in 2011.

Agree with the "club" being named Victoria. The same as the Waratahs and Reds.

Brett, Just as long as they don't start calling Victoria a 'province' you find them in Canada but not Australia.

thank you jack. prob not going to play at RWC 2011 but will switch codes for sure. apart from origin he has done plenty in league. he will play a couple of seasons for the rebels then hope of the european/uk cash cow with a history of playing both codes in australia behind him just like clinton schifcofske! league players who have tcan prolong their carhe skills to change codes realise they can prolong their careers and travel the world by by playing rugby!

Vili Faingaa (3rd/4 brothers) was a storm junior, but prior to that, an absolute weapon in Rugby. Played with him for our school, and also state (territory?) - would be the goods!

Percepetions are everything Redb, as I said if nothing other than to avoid confusion and create a point of difference. In my mind they should have been 'Victoria' from the day they were announced (NSW, Qld, ACT, WA, Melbourne?!?)

Balthazaar, Colby only just re-signed with the Brumbies last week, for next year at the least, so it mightn't be the "near" future...

Temba, you need to get your facts right, he was St Kilda CEO before he was involved in Rugby League....You can blame the AFL if you use your ill-conceived logic

Oh dear, it's that time of week again for me. I think I have to say 'Come on the Reds!' Apologies to those who wanted to read about Mr Waldron! What price the Reds getting another Faaingaa in the near future?

Question. Has a certain extremely opinionated and so publically verbal former rugby league player/ coach and channel nine commentator come out and voiced his thoughts. reason, Rumours about this sought of "stuff" was floating around Sydney about 8 years ago with a Sydney club (not the Bulldogs). very lucrative golf games played. No names but his silence is deafening.

I wrote in reply to KPM on my column today that I wonder if the Rebels might do worse than now dropping ‘Melbourne’ from their name. Given the widely accepted stereotype that Melburnians (and plenty of others too) have trouble distinguishing the rugbies, perhaps it might be a smart move to create a bigger difference in naming. So as to avoid any unnecessary confusion between the new team and the tainted, perhaps now it’s time for them to be known as the Victorian Rebels??

agreed, such a shame we've not been talking about this game due to recent events...or perhaps that's a good thing for the Reds? Time will tell Good luck Reds!!
