Inglis signing brings bling back to Brisbane

The signing of Greg Inglis could prove to be one of the most important in the history of the Brisbane Broncos. In one (albeit very expensive) foul swoop the Broncos have potentially found the piece of the puzzle which will return the club to their halcyon days of the early 90s when they were the benchmark for rugby league.

Broncos fans can be elated, Inglis joins a team that will have forwards like Ben Hannant, Corey Parker and Sam Thaiday to lay a platform and some of the best young talent in the competition like Matt Gillett, Andrew McCullough and Josh Hoffman establishing themselves.

Let’s face it, a venue like Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium is a fitting place for someone of Inglis’ talents.

To be in the marketing department for the Broncos is the 2011 season may well become one of the easiest jobs in the country.

Somewhat disturbingly though the Broncos team suddenly looks pretty expensive across the board and you could argue there is an irony in the idea that Inglis was released by one club with cap problems and the talent distribution system of the cap means the player ends up at one of the most powerful clubs in the competition.

It’s not like he joined Brett White in Canberra to give the Raiders a red hot chance for next year.

It also seems a bit odd that a payment by the “Thoroughbreds” (that group of Brisbane businessmen who seem to crop up every time the Broncos need a few bucks… no pun intended) is allowed under the cap.

While Channel Nine have also chipped in with some money for his media work. Pardon my cynicism, but I can’t quite see GI being hailed as “the next great comic talent for the Footy Show” any time soon nor can I see him happily talking about golf swings and failed horse races with Andrew Johns in the commentary box given their recent history.

However, one must assume that Ian Schubert will have approved the deal so all is surely above board.

But there you go, the game’s best player goes from one News Ltd club to the other. Murdoch wins again.

Can I also submit that I found the whole claims of Inglis suddenly wanting to be in Brisbane to be near his fiancé a bit weird. Not that it should be weird for a bloke to want to be near his better half to-be but has anyone asked why she jumped town when he at the time had two years left on his deal with Melbourne if they hadn’t worked through the “long-distance” angle.

Also let’s say Melbourne suddenly found an extra 100K or the Broncos had not found the missing wedge; would the happy couple suddenly decided they could handle Skype?

It just hit me as a massive red herring.

Maybe it’s best not to ask too many questions.

One thing is for certain the Broncos have been able to achieve the near impossible and improve their squad after the loss of Israel Folau.

Oikee, I hope that smiley face means you're joking! "Brisbane know how good a player Inglis Is" [!] He's a legend down here even for AFL fans who are very knowledgable. He was plucked from your place (as was the unwanted Smith and unrecognised Slater) and MADE a superstar. The subject of your previous act of thievery on "family grounds" , Israel Folau, has never looked happy with the Broncos - admittedly living with his mother may have contributed to that! - and spent last year's grand final with his spiritual family celebrating the 'premiership'. And like Folau, the shy Inglis will need cotton wool to protect him from all those sycophants! I'm really hoping his heart isn't in it when he plays the Storm.

Oiks, I semi-agree with Macavity - we are a one-team town and still can't sell out our stadium. With Inglis coming I can see membership jumping by a bit, and attendances going higher. They need 2 win a premiership and get a club culture going that becomes the community culture and get the games sold out constantly so its like a festival every game. That would b beautiful and ideal. We need 2 sell out every game now, we have Inglis, Thaiday, Lockyer, Parker and Te'o 2 sell 2 crowds now!!!

To Barry and Brett you can earn as much as you like from genuine third party agreements – i.e. parties that have no financial link to the club. If Warren Buffet was happy getting no signage or exposure but was also a die hard broncos fan he could offer Lockyer 10 billion dollars and it is perfectly allowable under the cap. That’s why when someone says they should just allow unlimited third party agreements it is normally a decent sign they don’t know how the cap works.

What i like about Inglis moving to the Broncos, he gets the recognition he deserves. Slater is well known in Melbourne, Cronk and Smith also have a fairly good profile, but Inglis seems to be a lost cause down their. Do they realise how good he really is, or do they think Akka or Cousins are more impressive? Mate, the Brisbane fans and supporters of the game know how good Greg Inglis is, plus he is a Kangaroo, a player who can win you the big games. The Broncos and the public will wrap him in cotton wool, treat him like the superstar he really is, and he will hopefully win us some games. Melbourne was not doing him justice, Brisbane will look after him. :) We have done it for Hodges, we will do it for Inglis, and he said he wants to return to Melbourne, we will send him back a true superstar.

Could have said the same after the Bulldogs cap scandal, and then whammo, a couple of years later the Storm do it. I don't think Brisbane are neccessarily cheating per se - they have just engineered a ridiculously uneven playing field and are taking full advantage.

the same ch 9 that sponsors the Broncos and gave the not exactly eloquent Inglis a deal? Got any proof of that?

I also believe now any club CEO was dumb enough to try an expensive swifty(yes clubs will creep over the cap because of injuries ,rep payments),will not only be publicly tarred and feathered and possibly involving court procedures ,but will ensure his future lack of employment in sporting administration and possibly in areas of free enterprise. This debacle is a warning to all codes 'administrators, because there is always an aggrieved whistleblower, ready to return serve..

Paul J - to answer your question, I think since the Storm scandal broke there's a new realisation that you don't have to have that many highly paid players to put your team over the cap. A roster containing Lockyer, Thaiday, Inglis and Hodges is certainly comparable to Melbournes "Fab 4". The Broncos are one of the best at identifying and developing young talent...but so are the Storm. The Broncos have let a lot of players go over the past 4-5 years...so have the Storm. There are some potentially scary comparisons. When Inglis first signed there were reports flying around that GI had signed for anywhere up to $660k a season - I would assume that most of the posts above were reactions to those kind of figures being thrown around (I'll put my hand up). Since Bruno Cullen has come out with a bit more detail about the contract and the third party deals I have more (not complete) comfort about the signing. I think this says a lot for the NRL being a bit more transparent with players deals - a tough issue because of players right to privacy. In the end I guess it's a shame that the signing of one of the best players in the game has generated so much controversy...not a good look for the game. A greater level of transparency would have avoided that. Where alarm bells will really start ringing is if / when their young players like Yow Yeh, Gillett, Te'o, Hoffman, Norman start re-signing on increased contracts.

At the beginning of the year they were the 'Baby Broncos'. Izzy leaves and GI comes in and now they're salary cap cheats?

Curious I suggest 3 reasons: Slater,Cronk and Smith. They would be on huge bikkies.Slater because he represents the game in Vic,Cronk because he creates the backline and smith because he is the forwards 'mainstay. Additionally I also understand that any company not involved in sponsoring the NRL or the NRL clubs, such as eg Shell or Rio Tinto could have inglis in some ambassadorial/ promotional roles as an example ,and pay as much as they want in 3rd party(unlimited). The current 3rd party limit of $300,00 involve sponsors involved with the club. In Inglis's case however his money was topped up by the FOGS group ,who are queenslanders (former players) supporting Queenslanders.Unfortunately the Vic domiciled Storm could not compete on that basis.

Anyone who believes any club would put their fans and sponsors through what the Storm have just done and having to start all over again have short memories. Broncos are one of the clubs that invest in young players and bring them through the ranks only to see the clubs that don't pick them off when they come good. I would much prefer to see a system where home grown product is protected from those clubs relying on others to put in the hard work and investment only to see it used against it. Gallop believes in sharing talent around but this is unfair to those who try to develop our youngsters and those who don't. I am therefore sad to see Inglis go from a side that has bought him along from a young player to a super star, but am glad to see him go to another side that has a history of also seeing their stars being snapped up after they have been developed. The salary cap might even the scores but the frustrations it causes along the way and the apparent need for clubs to cheat has got to be addresses by the new commission as a matter of urgency.

Curious how the incredibly successful, News Ltd owned Brisbane Broncos can shoe horn in a player like Inglis into their salary cap but Melbourne cannot.

a) The Broncos are good enough and smart enough to use every resource allowed to them, if that means taking advantage of willing Third Parties and sponsors to get a great player then we should actually applaud them for not being totally retarded, unlike some other clubs who probably don't even know what a third party is b) Greg Inglis is a winner, and he wants to keep it that way. Out of all the clubs that could actually afford him the club whose been in the finals for the past 18 years straight is probably the best option. Who wants to be an overachiever in an underachieving team? No-one but Johnathan Thurston (no offense cowboys) (I totally think next year is your year) c) Sydney people can just shut-up now because if you wanted him at your Sydney based club it would probably have been better if you hadn't made him public-enemy number 1 for the past like 5 years. d) suck it And I'm out!

Let's get this straight - The Broncos bought Tronc by the money they got from PJ Marsh retiring and other than that they bought Hannant and now Inglis - that is all. They lost Hunt last year (he was offered 550k reportedly), Lockyer took a pay cut (he announced this himself - the courier mail had a whole week devoted to it), Folau was on 500k a year and is now gone. In fact, there was a major uproar to where is all our money going because we don't have that many players getting a lot of money (Thaiday and Folau, and possibly Parker are the only ones flying high). At the end of the day look at our club and look at the Dragons, the Eels, the Souths (and forwards usually cost more than backs) and then compare to the Broncos. And remember, this is Thaiday's best year by far, Te'o has stepped up and the young guys are what are making us look great.

Rabbitz, lets give Steve the benefit of the doubt. He may deliberately have used "foul" so as to highlight the salary cap rorts. and as the witches would say:" Fair is foul, and foul is fair"

Steve, I hate to sound pedantic but with the phrase "one (albeit very expensive) foul swoop", I think you mean "one (albeit very expensive) fell swoop". It is a Shakespearean phrase from the Scottish play (Macbeth).
