Brisbane impressively down Central Coast 2-0

By Wayne Heming / Expert

A magical first half strike by midfielder Thomas Broich and a sizzling second stanza drive by Ivan Franjic saw Brisbane sink Central Coast 2-0 in their A-League clash at Suncorp Stadium.

In front of a crowd of 5,051, the smallest in the club’s history, Brisbane dominated throughout to open up a gap in second spot on the A-League ladder.

Broich’s 21st minute goal was stunning.

The German’s audacious long-range shot floated and swung 30 metres diagonally before sneaking into the top right hand corner of the goal.

Mariners `keeper Matthew Ryan, who had a tough night, had ventured forward just far enough to entice Broich to gamble on a shot which he struck to absolute perfection.

His goal came a few minutes after teammate and Roar skipper Matt McKay screwed a shot wide of Ryan only to hit the left upright.

Striker Reinaldo should have stretched the Roar’s lead to two goals in the 41st minute only to be left red-faced after missing a sitter when Ryan carelessly flicked the ball off his goal-line to prevent a corner kick.

After being dominated for most of the first half Mariners attacker Daniel McBreen almost produced the equaliser with a quality header in the 44th minute.

It took a desperate clearance by Matt Smith to save the day.

Franjic effectively concluded proceedings in the 61st minute with his 25 metre shot.

The clash opened in dramatic fashion with referee Chris Beath issuing central defender Rostyn Griffiths and Dutchman Patrick Zwaanswijk with yellow cards in only the second minute.

Griffiths got his for roughing up McKay while Zwaanswijk’s was for dissent in the same incident.

Beath handed out seven yellow cards in all.

The Mariners surprised by not naming Patricio Perez (back injury) with the Roar identifying him as their danger man before the game.

The win keeps Brisbane, who face a hectic schedule of 18 games in eight weeks, four points clear of third placed Mariners.

Yes I suppose if you look at it that way MVDave. I know you are a Man U fan, but to me Arsenal have been the best side in the premier league in the last few years, some of the games I see them play, I just think 'totally awesome', but they never win the premiership. I have not watched Man U or Chelsea & though 'totally awesome', except when Ronaldo did his magic. Horses for courses MVDave

Errr didn't MV give the Roar a pasting to the tune of 3-0 a few weeks back? Doesnt that mean MV are better? :)

Brisbane are playing the best brand of football since the begining of the A-League & to think where they came from after Frank Farina's sacking. All credit must go Ange Postecoglou, he cleaned out the club most of their experience players, but also their most disruptive. He even lost 3 of his best young players. Well done Brisbane, easily the best team in the competition.

The roosters had a satuday game round 9 that only got 6300. So 5000 odd is not a bad effort.

Yeah, the lack of promotion is getting a bit irritating, although I did see a positive thing in the local throw away paper yesterday. On the front page there was a little bit about encouraging kids to have their birthday parties at the Roar games - 10 kids and 6 adults get in for free, and the child's name and a happy birthday message is put up on the screens at half time, so the kids get a real kick out of it. That's what was in the South East Advertiser yesterday - I assume it was the same across the city? I've seen a couple of bill-boards recently promoting the Roar, but I would really like to see more of that kind of stuff going on in the local rag. Incidentally, today on the Brisbane Times website there is a banner ad for the Roar vs Victory game, so hopefully the word is getting out. Mid-week games during school terms are never going to get good crowds here in Brisvegas, though, which would explain the low crowd this time around. That said, I am super excited by the way the Roar are playing. I don't want to put the mockers on them, but it would be fabulous to see the Roar in a Grand Final up here at Suncorp! :)

Cpaaa----no advertising down on the Gold Coast neither. In fact I was unaware there was a game on at Suncorp until the eleventh hour. Not that I would have gone as it is far too far for the Coasties to go during the week.. Good to see some success at Suncorp finally at last for the true believers----not those who jump from one club to another when the times get tough. ;)

That would be awesome and all for it though personally I prefer Suncorp even with just 5k in it rather than Ballymore if that became the choice. Might not look good in TV but there were enough people arround me that there was a bit of atmosphere if anything happened (goals, CCM players not getting sent off, Reinaldo's misses and Theo getting hurt). Obviously not every fan takes a small child with them (less people is actually an advantage) but if I had to choose between ease of access (busway is fantastic) or better atmosphere I actually side with access. It's not like I'm sitting near any of the fan groups in order to maximize the atmosphere that is there so I'm clearly content. Depending on the rental agreement I think the club can make Suncorp work. Without capital like Tinkler though it will probably have to wait until the next TV deal ..... though hosting the grand final will give the club a huge lift :) Also the Roar must be slipping MMM some dollars because they are getting decent promotion ont here morning show.

Art and Fussball----because I don't have Fox I watched the Cosmo's doco and I thought it was brillant. I can also say I was at the old Sydney Show Ground when the late Johnny Warren organised a diversion in their schedule to play a one off match in Sydney. I remember getting into the ground to watch the game with friends and the fans that turn up without tickets expecting to buy them outside were lock out because of a ticket bungle at the turnstiles.. They eventual expressed their anger by breaking through the metal gates and entered the arena where the security was overwhelmed. They allowed it to happen for fear of a spectator tragedy---It was believed that the numbers swelled to around 70k inside the arena.. I saw the great Franz Beckenbauer and the stars play---it was fantastic---excitement surrounded the whole event..

Mid week games are great, but they will always attract lower crowds.Thats why I would prefer that they were played in smaller venues. "Fully seated 15000 Perry Park please Ms Bligh" some advertising for the match would have been nice. In Brisbane there was, wait for it.......ABSOLUTELY NONE!!! Is anyone surprised? The positive side is that 5000 people that turned up are true fans that dont need any persuasion to attend. There is ONE paper in Brisbane called "the Courier Mail", make an effort next time Bombalass. The reason Broncos can max out the Suncorp is because 7,9, and 10 promote the next match days before the actual event. In the Roar case, any news about the game is on that very night,...half an hour before kick off, then its all ready to late. Now that League has finished for the year i really dont understand how and why the commercial networks have any excuses. Bomba used to read the sport for Brisbane 9 news before heading to board of directors of Roar,so you would think that he might have a little persuasion for some promo material. Great game though and both were world class goals, Brisbane are playing some excellent football and well done to Ange for cleaning out the booze buddies club.

Art I must say I am looking forward to Saturday night's match with as much anticipation and excitement as I was pre-Derby. Whilst I wasn't that impressed by Brisbane when they visited us at AAMI Park last month, I was absolutely blown away by the quality of Brisbane's football last w/e against Newcastle. After Brisbane this Saturday, MVFC plays AU at home on the Friday before the Melbourne Cup, so the next 2 games will tell me whether MVFC's form reversal against Sydney was an aberration ... or, is season-defining.

Thanks for that observation Vinay - I saw what you saw. I remember saing to my wife how "beutifull" the goal was... The cricket comparison for me is the elegant late cut for 4....

ABC2 screened the fantastic New York Cosmos doco "Once in a Lifetime' at the same time as the game. I caught it a few years back but it was great to see it on the small screen, again. If you have not seen it...do! Anyway, I did manage to record the game and again was thoroughly impressed by Ange's team. Big test will be the game on Saturday against Victory. Ange will be keen to reverse the defeat from their first meeting. It should be quite a game. Let's hope they get the turnout they deserve on Saturday night.

We can agree to disagree, I think Mckay was protecting himself from the incoming stomp when he grabbed Griffiths boot as it was poised over him. I hope Solorzano is the answer to Brisbane’s forward problem as Reinaldo isn’t. Once Solorzano came on the Roar got a little too excited by his pace and went forward to quickly with long balls trying to find him on the breakaway. If they just play the same way they do when Reinaldo is up front and have Broich threading the through balls from 30 metres out from goal they will have a consistent goal threat. That is the only thing holding them back from being favourites for the title.
