A magical first half strike by midfielder Thomas Broich and a sizzling second stanza drive by Ivan Franjic saw Brisbane sink Central Coast 2-0 in their A-League clash at Suncorp Stadium.

In front of a crowd of 5,051, the smallest in the club’s history, Brisbane dominated throughout to open up a gap in second spot on the A-League ladder.

Broich’s 21st minute goal was stunning.

The German’s audacious long-range shot floated and swung 30 metres diagonally before sneaking into the top right hand corner of the goal.

Mariners `keeper Matthew Ryan, who had a tough night, had ventured forward just far enough to entice Broich to gamble on a shot which he struck to absolute perfection.

His goal came a few minutes after teammate and Roar skipper Matt McKay screwed a shot wide of Ryan only to hit the left upright.

Striker Reinaldo should have stretched the Roar’s lead to two goals in the 41st minute only to be left red-faced after missing a sitter when Ryan carelessly flicked the ball off his goal-line to prevent a corner kick.

After being dominated for most of the first half Mariners attacker Daniel McBreen almost produced the equaliser with a quality header in the 44th minute.

It took a desperate clearance by Matt Smith to save the day.

Franjic effectively concluded proceedings in the 61st minute with his 25 metre shot.

The clash opened in dramatic fashion with referee Chris Beath issuing central defender Rostyn Griffiths and Dutchman Patrick Zwaanswijk with yellow cards in only the second minute.

Griffiths got his for roughing up McKay while Zwaanswijk’s was for dissent in the same incident.

Beath handed out seven yellow cards in all.

The Mariners surprised by not naming Patricio Perez (back injury) with the Roar identifying him as their danger man before the game.

The win keeps Brisbane, who face a hectic schedule of 18 games in eight weeks, four points clear of third placed Mariners.
